  1. The new book is now available for Kindle on Amazon. The print book will follow as soon as I get the proof and approve it. I won't be making the official announcement tomorrow. Here's the Amazon link.

  4. I don't want to be a diabetic anymore. The last few months I have been struggling to keep the glucose levels under control. I wake up at 4am feeling like I have a hangover so I drink about 6oz of apple juice and go back to bed. Wake up a hour and a half later with levels over 200. Some days it just a pain in the ass to keep under control. I'm sorry if I sound like feeling sorry for myself I'm not trying to give you that impression or do I want you to feel sorry for me. I'm just venting my frustration. Most days every thing is fine and other days you try to do everything right and nothing works. I just wish there was a easy answer on the days that things don't work. OK I'm done complaining now ...Now go ride your bike.

  5. Spring starts tomorrow which is good because we are moving from winter (the third best season) to spring (the second best season). Unfortunately spring is followed by summer - the worst of all seasons. But then comes glorious autumn - the best season of all. So enjoy spring while it's here!

  15. I generally don't mind when people complain here. The complaining is something we all do from time to time, and I have done my share here. When I do, I always feel bad for complaining, but I think most people don't consider it overmuch or even notice other than passing, it is just what people do sometimes. We listen and kind of get in sync as a group, plus we learn a bit about you and what the topic of complaint is. It is humanizing to a greater degree unless all you do is complain. I really don't know much about diabetes, although it runs in my family (my mother has type 2, my grandmother had type 2, my grandfather had type 1 and died from complications when I was 4. What do you notice that leads you do a doctor to check things out? What are the symptoms? What do you take and when? What do you eat and when, and what happens when you do? I am curious about all this stuff!

  16. I have a deal with an Amish neighbor. He has used my evaporator the last few years. It is still a small 2x6 ft King evaporator but now has a pre-heater on it and reverse osmosis to take out 80% of the water. Instead of making 20 to 30 gallons a year this year we made about 90 gallons. I help a little but he does most of the work. I get a percentage of the syrup for the use of my equipment. Didn't take long to have it all sold.

  23. 44 miles with Gina at 16.6 average speed. She had a stuffy nose the last couple of days so I didn't think she would want to ride but she did, and well! A few times she passed me on the little uphills ha ha! We ran into our friends on the tandem who always post a better average speed on the ride. Last week we rode with them then when it got really windy, I took the front. We dropped them a few times but I slowed up so they could stay on our wheels. So I did the 10 mile tough section into the wind. But on the return with a tailwind, they dropped us. They got about 1 minute ahead of us and stayed there. The rest of the way we kept about the same distance so I was kind of surprised they left us behind on the return. So today, Gina and I stopped at a park to refill the water bottles. We saw them go by into the tough section. So we jumped on the bikes and headed off after them. I figured this time I was not going to help them IF we caught up. They were about 200 yards ahead of us so Gina asked if I was trying to catch them. If we catch them, we catch them I told her. I asked about her feeling on the bike. She said if I wanted to try to catch them, she was game. About 5 miles later we finally caught them after they had opened up the gap even more. But we did and when we went by, I made sure not to get in their draft and I did not look back as we rolled by. Another couple miles down the road I could see them trying to catch back up. They closed the gap a bit then we hit another really windy section and we left them behind. The next 2 miles they gave up so we opened up a bunch of time on them, maybe 5 minutes. There are plenty of times that I have worked with the guy then when he sees an opening, he tries to drop you, single or tandem. So today I did not offer any help and made it a point to leave them behind. Gotcha!

  24. For anybody that still hasn't caught it, the picture is a Sturmey Archer hub in disarray, but it's a 5 speed, not 3. And yes, I did get it back together with no parts left over, and it's ticking along nicely.

  26. That reminds me - I started watching a 3.5 hour documentary on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers last night. Very good so far! He is one of those like Steely Dan or Stevie Wonder, who I was always sort of meh with when they were big, but have real staying power and later I realize how good they were/are.

  40. 34 miles, high thin overcast, 70 degrees, 20-35 mph winds with gusts to 40-45 mph. Normally, that would be too windy to be worthwhile, but 70 degrees in mid-March here is too good to pass up.

  42. No. Even though I like to think I can ride like the pros I was no where near as good. But I am planning on going to Georgia next weekend to do some GNCC racing with my son. For this summer I was planning on trying to dabble in Supermoto and get my license for road racing. I have so many friends that did road racing and some on the pro level. I was always busy with all the drifrent types of off road racing that I never bothered throwing my hat in the ring and giving it a try.
