  6. I've heard dozens of horror stories from friends on shady contractors. Our neighbors had a contractor demand 100% payment up front and never finished the job and she can't track the guy down now... When we had our kitchen done we went through Home Depot. Yeah we paid more than going with bubba's kitchen remodel but... They were professional, did a fantastic job and even did a couple of small fixes not quoted for free and they finished on time. I can't speak highly enough of their work. Now the hack tile man that did the back splash (me), well that's a different story...

  8. Indeed. I think a good way to remember that, and to be grateful, is to review the Bill of Rights. Today we hear about how people have 'rights', or a 'right' to this or that, or 'freedom' of such or the other. But since the content and context of the Bill of Rights is rarely taught or even printed the meaning of the words 'rights' or 'freedoms' become clouded and amorphous. So, if you will, permit me to post the Bill of Rights as a means of reflection for what veterans have given of themselves and the magnitude of what we have received and continue to enjoy. The Bill of Rights – Full Text Amendment I Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. Amendment II A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. Amendment III No soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law. Amendment IV The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. Amendment V No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation. Amendment VI In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense. Amendment VII In suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise reexamined in any court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law. Amendment VIII Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted. Amendment IX The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people. Amendment X The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.

  10. Well, Mrs Z and I have made a move to a plant based diet. (Except we raise chickens and I dnjoy the eggs way too much.) Anywho, so far so good. We are cutting out processed foods as much as possible and the recipes she's been using are absolutely delicious. Her pilates and yoga instructors recommended a couple programs, she researched and we evaluated the information and here we are. We've been trying to move in this direction for a long time. I've had some adenomas removed from my colon and last week the took biopsies from my esophagus. (No results yet) And Mrs Z struggles with arthritis in her knees and has dealt with some prediabetic issues. So, we're hoping its a positive move. We both could shed a few pounds and bring our blood pressure down as well. Ahhh, the perks of aging...

  11. Back in the 90s I repped a company based out of Philly. The factory came down for a week & we BSed about a lot of crap. Anyhoo, he wanted a screened in porch built off the back of his house. Contracted with a Mennonite company. Good price, good references, etc. They showed up when they said they were going to, worked steady to noon, brought their lunches, went to work right after lunch, declined any offers of tea/ice water/etc. from the guy's stay-at-home wife, cleaned up every day @ 5, and finished on time and on budget. While they were putting it up, the rep noticed that they were using 6x6 posts instead of the 4x6s listed in the quote. Rep sez what's up? Contractor says lumber yard was out of 4x6s & waiting for them would have put me behind. Rep says let me pay you for the difference. Contractor says no, this is on me.

  19. UPDATE: (because I know you all care...) It was a Great Horned. Apparently the crows managed to drive it to ground because when I just went out to shoo them off for the umpteenth time today, something very large and brown took off. The crows are now off on the edge of the woods, raising hell. At least they're further away.

  21. I see a lot of people wearing hi-vis yellow t-shirts. There's a lot of construction guys around here, and they wear them on the jobsite - and many other places. I'm used to it and don't think anything of it. But this morning, I saw a guy wearing hi-vis t shirt....and matching hi-vis basketball shorts. He looked like a traffic cone. Then I walked in Walmart and there was the same outfit, on a display....

  26. Poor doggy. It must be confusing not be able to see anymore. I know she didn't mean any harm. Give her an extra treat to make up for her anxiety (maybe leave them in her food bowl?) and have an extra treat for yourself too. Being kind to old doggies is good karma.

  39. Yes. As far as the rating of the wire: Type NM (Romex) wire has conductors rated up to a temperature of 90C. Technically the rating of a 14AWG conductor covered with insulation rated 90C is 25 amps. Your circuit breaker has a trip rating of 20 amps, but depending on the the type of load it could trip anywhere from 16 amps and higher (which is a discussion for another day). Combining those two facts with the circumstances that would cause a breaker trip, it is unlikely that your 14-2 wire itself would start to burn up if subjected to a 20amp load. Note I did not say it would be impossible. So, while that may make you feel a little better about what's installed and maybe let you worry less, that doesn't make the installation code compliant. And the Code has been developed over the years to make electrical installations safe. The Code limits the use of 14AWG wire to circuits protected with a fuse or breaker rated at 15 amps, for good reason. There are many older installations with insulation with much lower temperature ratings where it would indeed be unsafe to run 20 amps through such a wire. Given many older buildings are added to and remodeled, the limitation keeps people safe. You can run anything you want off the load (protected) side of a GFCI receptacle. You're not required to run a bathroom fan off of a GFCI unless the fan is within the footprint of a shower or tub. The wire should be selected to match the electrical load (yet another discussion for another day). In homes the wiring is either rated to carry 15 amps or 20 for typical household circuits. Many people think the breaker is selected based on what load will be on the circuit, but not really. Since the designer or installer never knows how much will be plugged in to a circuit, the breaker is selected to protect the wire. The load determines the wire size, which determines the current rating of the wire, which then in turn determines the breaker trip rating. Load the circuit up as much as you want, because a properly operating breaker will open to protect the wire and protect you in the process. Don't beat yourself up over this, SW. Believe me, I've seen much worse, and that installed by people who had the experience and training to know better.
