  1. Just 10 km. or so north of our city..the folks will require 750 jobs per week. The municipality must have known this for months while our city was in the midst of prepping our HQ2 bid. It was announced to the press just a few days ago. The Mayor and his Councillors have been in closed door negotiations onsite for the past month. It will be the Canadian version of Nevada and a major employer of temporary foreign workers of Romanian and Russian decent. I feel so dirty. Sorry SS. Bad Wilbur!

  2. I was at the Writer's Digest conference in Pasadena. Met a lot of great people and filled my brain to overflowing, but the best part? I got to meet and spend some time talking to the amazing Heather Graham (the author, not the actress). Brilliant, funny, and amazingly down to earth.

  5. Coolest or coldest? I hauled on the Tibbitt to Contwoyto winter road from Yellowknife to the diamond mines in NWT and Nunavut for the 2007 season. Same place and time they were filming Ice Road Truckers season one. We knew there was filming going on, but we had no idea they were making a "reality" tv series. I did watch the series, and it was kind of cool to remember where I was on the road when some of the incidents they documented happened and how those incidents impacted me as some of them did.

  6. Usual scenario. A recruiter emails on linkedin "You have great experience, are you looking now?" They tell about the opportunity, which sounds good and is not 100% exactly what I have been doing, but requires all the same skills and attributes. I reply back and attach resume. They call and we get along fine. We discuss the opportunity, we discuss my experience, they seem impressed to a degree. "Now this position requires that you have x number of years selling exactly what it is that we sell, the hiring manager was looking for that, do you have that?" I say no, then you hear the disappointment in their voice and they start to say that they are precluding those without the exact experience. Me: Did you not look at my resume and experience and consider that I would be a prospective fit before you called? Recruiter: Well, yes, but... Me: Look, I have talked to other recruiters and they want an exact fit. I ask how long they have been looking to fill the position, and I hear 4 or 8 months, and I think "You have to change your parameters, or you will be looking well into the next year". You want to be making the same call with someone else like me 6 months from now? I am sure the hiring manager is looking for someone who is personable, competitive, understands technology, is organized, and can learn, right? Well, you have someone like that on the phone right now, what are your going to do? She laughed and told me "I like you", and said that she will forward my information and notes to the hiring manager and ask that he call in the next couple of days. I don't think this is common for people to be demanding like that, but it seemed appropriate.

  8. Ran a half marathon today in 1:59:54. First time under 2 hours in a couple years! It was a bit chilly (36F) at the start. Ran comfortably until a cramp in my right calf started around mile 9.5. It didn’t really affect my pace until Mile 12. My last mile was down about 20 seconds and most of the time was lost running up the bridge/archway to the finish. I gave what was left on the descent and it was barely enough. Still happy with it overall!

  15. My son lost the battle for the championship for the Vet pro class GNCC racing by 1 point. He pitted on the last lap and I informed him that he was 1 minute 50 seconds behind the leader. He caught up and was on the rear wheel of the leader 2 miles from the finish when he made a mistake and went down. Now he's kicking himself for not being more patient and waiting to make the pass in a part of the corse that he knew that he was faster than Sean in.

  16. Well, I can't talk too much about it, but for a while I put to use a very particular set of skills which I had acquired over a very long career. It was fun, but I think it was a good idea to move on to a kinder, gentler Tom. Tom

  20. I have a partial tear in an ACL, a painful hip flexor, tendonitis in one thumb and rotator cuff pain in one shoulder. On the upside, I can do 8 pull-ups now and 4 sets of 25 push ups. I am destroying my joints getting fit. My chronic lower back pain is gone!

  21. That lake is more than 400 ft deep. The canyon between the mountains is a beautiful hike. Last summer, I stopped to take a picture then immediately dropped my camera and watched it skid across the bridge into the creek 15 ft below. My gf and I just looked at each other in disbelief. I said it would be okay, because I had another camera at home. Without pausing she replied "one with a strap?"

  23. We had this discussion at dinner with some friends Saturday night. For me it was spending 5 1/2 months doing some environmental assessment work in norther Quebec. I worked for a company that was hired to do work for the Cree people who live there. There was a large lawsuit regarding the Great Whale Hyde project. Our job was to conduct unbiased assessments, which we did. Met some really neat people while working there.

  25. I feel lucky that my remaining siblings (4, 1 sister died) and handful of long-term close friends have very good health. Youngest sister is 49- her health is excellent. (She is a doctor) She exercises a few times wk. All other siblings are in their 50's. 1 sister has become deaf in 1 ear, she has balance problems as a result but no other health problems. Another sister had a back injury which she needs to be careful. She has scaled down her jogging distance but still does it. Brother is fine. No one has cardio nor weight problems. All of these siblings coincidentally work in different hospitals in Greater Toronto area (doctor, pharmacist, receptionist, IT). They are exposed to/hear of patient problems. Friends whom I'm close for past 25 years: Out of 3 who are all different (not part of 1 friendship group), 1 is starting to get a mysterious hip pain in past 2 months. Their age ranges from 57 to 61 yrs. They have all separately in their own way --eat reasonably healthy and have over the years, taken up at least 1 exercise they do several times per wk. The 61 yr. is starting to get rotator cuff problem and tennis elbow....because she loves playing tennis several times / wk., she does light weights and does go on bike rides. The 5th youngest friend whom I've known only for past 7 yrs., should lose about 10-15 lbs. She knows that. She has hip pain, because someone ski-crashed into her. But she tries to walk a lot, etc. A few years ago she did a lot of hiking, kayaking. As part of her job is working on liveable streets program which is ensuring new developments and older neighbourhoods' transportation infrastructure promotes safe walking, cycling and access to transit. I've been surrounded by fairly healthy people for many years. I consider this a naturally good influence..in addition to my own efforts.

  26. What I don't understand is why can anybody walk into a motorcycle dealership and buy a Suzuki Hayabusa that is able to go 190mph stock from the factory. And it doesn't take a hole lot of modifications to get it well over 200mph and you don't even need a license to purchase it. But I need schooling and a license to race on a track.

  28. I worked for the DNR one year. I was 1/2 wildlife biology designation and 1/2 administrative. I'm still friends with one of the wildlife biologists; we were in the local brew club together too. I could tell who my real "friends" were when I had that job. When I said, "I work for the DNR," my real friends replied, "Cool!" The others didn't. My real friends knew it was a good job for me.

  31. That's kind of you to say that.......apart from my dog this is the first time that someone's been pleased to see me. The latest pain is from my shoulder so I've gone all a bit hippy and have bought some Tiger's Balm and I'm hoping it's going to work. At my age having a pain or three is necessary in order to remind you that you're still alive.

  33. This is what my son posted this morning LikeCommenttotal_sassholeWell folks, this is what blowing your chance at a national championship looks like. Holeshot and led the first lap, but then fell back after getting stuck on two different hillclimbs. Stopped for gas a mile into the last lap and was told I was a minute and a half behind who I needed to beat for the title. I proceeded to ride like my ass was on fire for the next 10 miles, and with two miles to go I was literally on his back wheel coming into this log matrix. Stupidly, instead of exercising restraint and following in the safe line to try and attack later, I took a different line to make a pass possible and got stuck. It was exhilarating to be so close after working for so long to achieve something far bigger than I've ever even attempted

  35. I worked for three years as the maintenance supervisor at a large church camp and retreat center that was located at the top of a hill. The summertime was very busy but fun. I was in charge of the maintenance staff, lifeguards, and pool director. I worked with contractors on the larger projects. In the winter the center was used for weekend retreats. I had the entire 500 acres pretty much to myself during the week.

  38. I just made 5 jars with strawberries, yogurt and currently dry oatmea-- breakfast is set. Also made a batch of turnips, spinach, rice, and sweet potatoes for lunches. Finaly just made an eggplant "lasagna " with a too big eggplant. First layer sauce, second layer eggplant sliced long and thin. Then ricotta cheese mixture with spinach. Next eggplant. Then chopped red peppers, hatch peppers, scallions, and mushrooms that I tossed in some leftover homemade pesto. Mixed in some shaved parmesean with the veggies and spread on the next layer. Then eggplant. Then sauce. Then mozzarella . Otis of slicing and dicing but I wasted nary a vegetable . I think we will eat it on Monday and Wednesday.

  39. I despise toxic workplaces. I've been in them. The only way it benefits an employer is if you have an unending supply of labor for an unskilled job --then your disgusting treatment keeps the wages from ever going too high. And it's still !@#$hole behavior. When you require talent and you're toxic -you're eventually going to get burned, it's just going to take time for skilled ex-employees to spread the word enough. You treat me like crap, and my return will be working within my sphere to make sure nobody else endures that crap after me, in the hope it will change you or break you.
