  1. This thread brings back a fond memory of my mom. After her stroke she couldn't communicate effectively and my daughter and my niece were around 12 or 13 and eating Taki's, kinda a Hispanic spicy Cheetos type thing. Anyway my mom wanted one and my daughter said they're hot Oma but she insisted so my daughter gave her one and she started making faces, making blowing sounds for about 5 seconds. My daughter was like, see Oma I told you they were hot. My mom still has this funny face and holds out her hand and says "more!". She ate the rest of the bag making that silly face after each Taki!

  2. I kept threatening to take one of the road bikes off the hook, pump the tires up and go for a ride, and each time I remembered that the pads in my helmet had been sweated out. I have now ordered new pads, and unless it gets really cold, I feel my first road bike ride coming soon once I get the pads installed.

  15. Holy crap it's cold out there!! Low 30's and a headwind on the way back. Just 14.7 miles, but I'm still beat! And still trying to warm up! I DID start out with warm tea... And I picked up a warm pasty with about 3 miles to go... It wasn't a favorite, but I had no problem eatin' it up!

  16. I found out today that my city's mayor was voted out of the Mayor's office by the board. She will remain on the board though. She is an extremely passionate and aggressive person for things that she cares about. She is also a flaming beotch and has a you are either with me or against me attitude and will squash those against her. She also doesn't see her double standard in that if it's important to her you can break rules. If it's not important to her and rules are broken she must crush you and call you a criminal. Her son and mine went to school together and thank god her son didnt play baseball but i heard all of the storiea from other boosters and the principle. She used her influence to have 2 football coach's fired as their schemes didnt work for her (her son was QB). She basically bullied the principle and board to get what she wanted. Granted we got a new weight room and stadium but I think the money should have gone elsewhere. She once tried to tell me I was in violation of the law for not being a part of the superboosters (run by her). I told her to F off and worry about football. None of the well funded programs joined as we knew our funds would go into a pool that would be pillaged by football boosters. We gave softball money for new uniforms as they couldn't get the money they fundraised as It was already spent by football.. Well she is outraged and dismayed she was voted out by nearly unanimous vote in her first year. It doesn't surprise me or anyone who really knows her...

  23. I am from Ohio, most people my age and older have been "good soldiers". You work for what you get, fight for the country, and the country will fight for you, etc, etc. My parents were good soldiers, saved and didn't live an extravagant lifestyle, put away enough (along with social security) for retirement. Now they are broke because of my mother's health issues. One pill she has to take costs $7,500 a month, every month. Just one of her medications. The insurance company won't pay it, the pharmaceutical company offers some assistance with it, but damn, wtf do you pay for insurance that won't pay for medication needed so your insured can live? She had "good" insurance at the time she got sick, too. This one event and the carryover didn't just affect them, it affected my brother and his family, it affected me as well as her brothers and their families, too, and still does. This is not a "good" system. This is not an "adequate" system. It is a system where, if you do everything right, it will probably still bankrupt you if anything beyond appendicitis finds you. We have a shitty health care system as compared to every other western industrialized country, and it is strikingly clear that the government and the health care industry ONLY give a shit if you are paying into the account you finance rather than using it as intended when disaster strikes.

  26. Agreed (I forgot about the Muppet version; excellent). I think seeing this one is what set me checking out the piano arrangement. I've watched this clip so many times I really should throw a few bucks her way. She's amazing, and how she manages to play a melody line on top of all those chords is well beyond me.

  27. Still have fond memories of a vacation in Michigan in 2000 driving up the West side of Michigan doing the Wayne's World thing. My step daughter would have been 12 and my daughter 5. I think its an incredible song.

  30. It was a cold day, and the residents inside the overly-large house were huddled in too many layers of clothing, their hands suffering the most in the bone-chilling conditions. Free fingers were needed to type, you see. "This feels like a crypt" he thought, "even the cats that hate each other are huddled together". If the scene was witnessed by anyone, they would have felt the desperation dripping like a cloud about to burst, with no immediate relief in sight. The still-falling snow added to the gloom. "Spring is only a million days away", he mused, "Maybe I can dig to the molten core of the earth to warm up a little". Something must be done, as hunger was now adding to the somber mood. The oven roared to life, and soon the mouth of the fiery beast blasted out 425 white-hot degrees. "FEED ME", it shrieked! A potato was selected to appease the monster, a sacrifice made to prevent death on multiple fronts. The potato screamed when the cleaver appeared, but could not squirm away. The sweet potatoes watched from a safe distance, happy that it wasn't one of their own destined for slaughter today. Racist bastards, they were. The screams muffled the sound of the cleaver contacting the cutting board through the potato's newly exposed viscera. Conscious still as the cleaver made fast work of it, even the sweet potatoes looked away now. The exposed insides of the potato were now covered in olive oil, salt, and pepper. "This is not real, this is not happening", the potato frantically thought, "it is like some demented fairy tale". Then the oven door was opened and the blast of heat made the potato realize that this was only the beginning. Placed inside, the oil started to bubble, and soon the blood-curdling screams began.

  32. I saw a similar reaction in 1997 and I'll never forget it! When my younger brother bought his first house, he decided to do a small garden like me and, at the time, I was ordering seeds to start indoors in April to try out different varieties of peppers, tomatoes, etc. So my brother said, "I want to grow the hottest pepper you can start for me." The hottest one I could find available as seeds at the time was "Habanero C." I phoned a couple seed companies and was told they could only sell it to commercial operations. I called another and heard the message, "press 1 for Commercial and 2 for Home gardening." So I pressed "1" and placed the small order with no trouble. There was a warning on the package against physically touching the seeds - if you then touched near your mouth, eyes, etc. you'd be in pain! So I carefully planted the seeds with tweezers - that I then thoroughly washed - in peat pots in April and delivered thriving plants to my brother in June. He was pleased with his first garden and the day finally came when he picked his Habenero C peppers. But no one in the family had the nerve to try it. This was at the time of Comet Hale-Bopp - the one you could see so clearly at dusk and for months - which is how I remember it was 1997 and a bunch of us were at my brother's house one day checking it out and one friend, a huge guy nicknamed "Lubs" (after the "pounds" abbreviation, "lbs."), said he would eat a Habenero C in honor of the comet. Lubs took ONE foolishly big bite (like the guy in the video eating the whole chip!) then quickly took a drink - I can't remember of what, but probably beer - and that made it worse! For several minutes we thought we were going to have to rush him to an emergency room. He exhibited symptoms just like the guy in the video! But he finally rode out the sensation after several minutes. We immediately began plotting who else we were going to get to try the peppers, but my brother's wife made us throw away the rest of them.

  35. I regretted getting rid of my 1968 Camaro, which I got in 1971 for $800 from my cousin and it got me through my best years of college. There were a lot of fond memories attached to it, like the time a girl named Jane left her jeans -with flowers embroidered on the pockets- on the back seat one Saturday night, I drove home not realizing it, only to be awakened by my smiling father on Sunday morning with the warning, "Hide those flowery jeans that are on your car's back seat before your mother sees them or there will be hell to pay."
