  6. ...so I attended a meeting of the River Park Neighborhood Association last night at my wife's request. She did not want to go alone. I'm not nearly as hooked into the local bike bureaucracy as I once was, having quit the management board of the bike co-op. So the first news I got about this "proposed" new paved trail on my side of the river was from a handout she brought home, depicting a homeless encampment on the river bank, and suggesting (very skillfully, and without actually saying the words), that paving this area (which is already a public unpaved trail along the toe of the levee) would result in a massive influx of criminals and homeless drug addicts, because pavement. So I told her I would go along with her, even though she was telling me that paving this trail would ruin it for her as a natural walking area, and she were agin' it. *ptoo* I, of course, being generally in favor of bike trails, felt remarkably neutral about this one. I feel I'm already well served in that regard in my location. And it's not a big deal for me to ride up to the pedestrian bridge at the college nearby and cross to the other side to use the paved 40 mile trail that's there. But I was curious, and you know what curiosity can do to a cat. The meeting itself was your typical small volunteer assn monthly meeting: i.e. dreadfully dull and so boring you want to stand up five minutes into it and shout "Kill me now !!!" But I sat there patiently with my hat pulled over my eyes waiting for the trail issue to come up, which because the guy running the meeting knew was gonna be awful, he held until the end. there were probably 25-30 residents in attendance, at a monthly meeting that rarely draws more than one or two (besides the actual board members). The vast majority of them were there to stop this intrusion into their previously "safe" neighborhood. At the beginning of the public questions and input period, I asked for an explanation of what was currently known with regard to the project. There had been a marked reluctance to share anything up until that point because (I surmise) the board president did not want to set off the crowd. It was pretty obvious that the majority of them were carrying torches and looking for someone to lynch. The one guy in there who knew the most about it turned out to be the guy who is against it and printed up those flyers. Turns out it's been in the works as part of the city's bike infrastructure plan for about 15 years. And it's in the environmental impact statement and design phase, having already had the funding approved for both of these things. So it's gonna happen. However, at the very end, when the board was putting together a committee for a public presentation at the April general membership meeting, and they wanted one community (not on the board) volunteer who was anti, one who was neutral, and one who was pro. When nobody volunteered as pro, I raised my hand and asked if I was "the only person in the room who rides a bike ?" Thank god some younger guy across the room who had been holding back raised his hand and blurted out he's a bike commuter, and the new trail would save him ten minutes daily each way on his five day a week commute. So they asked him and he volunteered. I felt like this: Anyway, as punishment I had a very realistic dream where I was back working for the fire department. That was unpleasant.

  12. I closed it because I asked people to be polite, and they weren't. I only left it open as long as I did because it was such a raw topic. I know people use different venues to vent and relieve some of their anxiety and stress, especially over the murder or children, but it just turned into I'm right you're wrong. Keeping this place open and alive is not easy. Please do not question my judgement.

  13. So you may not want an update but I'm giving it to you anyway WoScrapr finished her radiation & chemo first part of January. She had been told she was not going to lose her hair because light dose chemo. And she did not lose it....until about 2 weeks after finishing. She called me sobbing. She has not lost all of it, but definite thinning the head. About 2 weeks ago we had a little scare. She steps out of the shower and yells at me "My feeding tube fell out!!!!. There is maybe 10-12 inches (reported) of the tube in her belly and it was coming out more & more. We were in Bend so grabbed the dogs, a bag and made a run for the hospital in Portland. 3 hours later we are in ER. It took a while but the tube had not actually come out. The stitch holding the tube to the skin broke loose. Surgeon gently manipulated it back in & restitched it to hold it in place. Whew. Thought we were headed to the surgery room. She got another scan this week and....it came back completely clean. No cancer apparent. My jaw dropped when we heard that. Un freaking believable. She still has to do surgery. We meet w/the surgeon next week and get in the que. WoScrapr likes him a lot. I think because he encouraged her early on to use medical MJ for pain. She did and it did. On a sadder note Penny the Red had to cross the Rainbow Bridge today. She was a great dog. We were looking at pictures of her early on and laughing. The vet was crying alongside us. They had seen Penny a lot the last couple years. Penny loved going to the Vet. She would greet all the folks & dogs coming in/out. Here is a picture of her pure joy 2011-07-12 17.42.05.jpg.pdf

  14. A teacher is preparing reading material as part of curriculum for aboriginal/First Nations adult students who didn't finish high school in British Columbia. Today I'm pleasantly surprised she wants to reference a blog post with credit, I wrote on Canadian Canoe Museum which we visited just 2 years ago. Because I enjoyed the museum a lot, I showcased different facets of canoe cultural heritage, its history and cotemporary references in Canada. Made sure I got personal photos and references of canoe and kayak history where I've been in Ontario, British Columbia, etc. And artistry also. I did include the canoe journey of the Winter Olympics 2010 torch relay segment in Vancouver. It was for the world to see. I just hope because I'm not First Nations/native Indian I did right in breadth, respect on subject and stuffed with over 15 photos. Blog post was originally done because I loved the subject matter. Nothing else.

  25. Overnight it rained here but temps never went below 50. The trail was wet but it was nice out at 5:20 when I started. Rode the W&OD west to Sterling and back. 22 miles, 1:23. Saw a few bikes out, a couple of joggers and assorted dog walkers. A lot of deer, a fox and a skunk. I gave the skunk the wide berth that he deserved. Seeing the sun come up as I rode back is always a pleasure.

  30. Martha and I met in 1993 but I did not ask her out until a few months later. We were introduced by an old girlfriend of mine. We dated for 4 years, much of that time was spent racing sailboats all over Texas as we both crewed for friends who owned boats, much of it on a Merit 25 named Bob. I did foredeck, when involves all the head sail changes and Martha trimmed the headsails. So I decided to propose to her in a way that a foredeck person should propose to the person that flies the spinnaker that he puts up. I got a spinnaker donated by an friend at one yacht club and got the lettering from another friend at a sail loft and my room mate and I laid out the message. After asking her father for her hand in marriage, and buying a ring, and telling my parents, the stage was set. My parents and hers were on a spectator boat at the Texoma Easter regatta in 1996 and as we sailed back to the docks, we decided to test a new spinnaker. Martha was so busy watching the edges of the sail, which is how you tell how it is working, to actually look at the whole sail. When she finally did, she sat down on the deck. I had to wait until we got back to dry land to give her the ring, as there was no way I was going to trust my clumsy ass to take that rock out on the water. As we sailed back in, we reversed the sail so the message was facing the marina and all the boats began to honk their horns. We were married at the church she grew up in, Calvary Baptist, in Garland Texas by her youth minister from her childhood. We chose Feb 15th because neither of us had races that month and Martha said the 15th was a payday so she could remember it. BIG MISTAKE, as now I have to battle with all the Valentines day romantic schmucks to get my wife flowers or take her out to dinner for our anniversary. This story was brought to you due to a generous donation by @AirwickWithCheese to our 21st anniversary entertainment fund.

  37. ...it's been too cold to paint here, sosince the Richard Sachs was already painted, and the paint well cured, I've been assembling it. Here is what it looks like so far. It's an early frame from him, a custom order originally sold through the Toga cycle shop in NYC back in the 70's. (He told me so over on e-Richie.) I just put on the decals and installed the bearing assemblies. I still need to build some wheels. The rest should go together rapidly after that.
