  1. G did great. It was his first adult tri. His first open water swim. It was a super sprint. 200 Yd swim 12.5 mile bike and a 2 mile run. Mom didn't find out about the open water swim part until we were on the way up there that morning. I might have forgotten to mention it to her. G was one of the first in the water to start off the race. A guy passed him but ran out of gas and G went by him. G was the first one out of the water and first out on the bike. I think he was first back in on the bike for the Super Sprint, but it was kinda hard to tell as the Sprint was happening as well. Some of the fast guys on the bikes were starting to come in from the sprint. Full on TT bikes with disc rear wheels, aero helmets, etc. G was out quick on the run but his friend was out shortly after him. Sam is a really good runner. He caught G and beat him by about 5 seconds at the finish. They both went way too far and ran too long. I think that they would have gotten 1st and 2nd if they had not done that. But as it is, they ended up 3rd and 4th.

  3. There was an old guy I used to work with, when I started out. He was kind of a mentor. He always said “It’s not whether or not you fall in the shit, but how to get yourself out of it”. I’ve been building a new screen door for Camp*. I cut all the framing and glued it up, with half-lap joints on the corners. I was going to do the pocket for the screen frames on the table saw, with my dado blade, when I cut the half laps, but was having a hard time visualizing how the steps were going to match up at the joints. I was too lazy and in too much of a hurry, so I said “Oh, I’ll just pocket it with my router”. I knew I was going to wind up with radii in the inside corners, but figured I’d get close with the router - there’s a 90 degree side to my guide, but I’ve never used it before - then trim the rest of the material with my Dremel Multimax. It did not go well. No matter how careful I was, I kept gouging in further. I decided to take a light cleanup cut all the way around. Didn’t help. I had no feel on the router fence. If you don’t keep it perfectly parallel, it gouges. As far as I was concerned, the door was junk. I gave up. I resisted the temptation to take it out in the backyard and set it on fire. Two day’s later, I had an idea: use the other side of the router guide along the outside of the door,to trim all the gouges and then use my Multimax to trim the pockets to the right width, Worked like a charm. I fell in the shit, but I got myself out of it. Dammit, Higgins, you were right.......again..... *I’m building a new door because the old one met its demise when I had an Italian Moment while bringing in the new woodstove last fall. Of course it was an oddball size that I couldn’t just buy....

  4. We had our 40 year reunion last year. I stopped getting invitations 20 years ago when I wrote "return to sender - deceased" on the envelope. Never had a desire to go back there.

  20. Wade and I cooked yesterday so Martha could relax for Mother day. Did Pan Seared oven fished steaks and oven baked new potatoes. Rubbed the steaks down with a rub I got from a local restaurant guy, Matt Martinez. 4 Tbsp. granulated garlic 4 Tbsp. Kosher salt (or 3 Tbsp. regular salt) 4 Tbsp. corn starch 2 Tbsp. paprika 3 Tbsp. coarse ground black pepper 1/4 tsp. white pepper 3/4 tsp. dried thyme Let them sit at room temp for few hours then put them in a cast iron that had preheated to 450 in the oven. Seared both sides for 2 minutes then finished for ten minutes in the oven. Nice medium steak, but they were a bit tough, but not overcooked, so I am going to put that down to the cut of meat, not the prep. For the potatoes, quartered about 2 lbs of new potatoes, tossed them in canola oil, salt, pepper and garlic and then baked for 30 minutes at 450 Took them out of the oven, drizzled with olive oil and then added finely chopped chives and thyme and tossed them all together. It was a very nice meal. The potatoes were better than the steak.

  22. Try doing this with a reverse sear next time. Get a nice thick fillet or ribeye. Season it. Bake it at low and slow until the internal temp gets up to within 10 degrees of the doneness that you prefer. Take it out and sear it on the cast iron skillet for 2 min each side and let it rest for 10 min.

  32. And @Airehead it was pretty windy. Like REALLY windy that day. Like whitecaps on the reservoir type windy. I don't think that aero wheels would have helped. I think more swimming, riding and running would have helped.

  35. I change the oil in our vehicles unless my wife's comes due in crappy weather. I put them up on ramps in the driveway and have it done in five minutes total. I have a cabinet in the garage I keep stocked with oil and filters along with the tools I use to change oil and a funnel. I don't use the ramps in the ice and snow, I tell her to take it somewhere. On my car I just wait for a better day but I don't put many miles on my cars.

  41. I've been checking out some oldies I haven't heard in years and posted a thread about Bobby Gentry's Ode to Billie Joe a couple days ago. Another one I liked was Jackson Browne's version of Stay (Just a little bit longer) from 1978 that begins at about 6:10 in the video below. The woman singing, extremely well, the 2nd verse is Rosemary Butler who was the bass guitarist and lead singer of an all-girl band called The Ladybirds. They wowed us around 1964 when I was a 14 year-old teenie bopper when they opened for The Rolling Stones in the old Baltimore Civic Center. An all-girl band and "chicks with picks" was rare back then. The guy playing the "steel guitar" on his lap toward the end is David Lindley, a well-known session musician who can play lots of different instruments well and still does concerts at age 74 now. Linda Ronstadt, in her memoirs, says her bands got that sound by sliding an 11/16" socket wrench along the fretboard, but I can't see what he's using here. Linda and Jackson emerged in the late 60's-early 70's "Los Angeles Sound" group along with the Eagles and a few others.

  42. I love Tommy! I had a cat that looked like him named Morgan. I got Morgan when a brick fell from a chimney and hit him in the head. He was about 6 months old. The people were not going to pay for treatment. I did and loved him for 15 years.
