  1. I miss the traditional lumber yard the most. They didn't sell curtains or appliances or ceramic tiles and rare was a woman visitor. If a woman was there, she was normally in the family sedan while the husband loaded wood on the roof racks. My local store when I was a kid, was owned by a family that lived on our street. I remember going there with my dad to buy wood, nails and screws. I loved the smell of the yard, the smell of the nail bin but not the smell of the single toilette, filthy bathroom. If we went there, we were building something and it was exciting. The local store was run by one man with two yard men, boys at the time. The boys would help load the car and tie the load down. My Dad and would go into the office where I would go get a few scoops of nails in the penny size my Dad wanted. They would go into a paper bag of course. No money changed hands. It was magical. Brian Kask would just say, "On the account Willie?" He was the only person I ever heard call my Dad that slang. There was nobody counting or weighing. Everything was done on an honor system and a handshake. I just read a few years ago that that yard had closed, having been sold to a national chain. Brian retired to Scottsdale, the two yard boys were paid out to retirement by Brian when he sold. He looked after the guys who worked their entire lives at the same old yard job. He had even paid their kids education and carried the mortgage on their houses. Simple times.

  2. There is some hard work happening here. Since my diagnosis of pea pez cavus, arthritis along with massive inflammation, pain and stiffness, believe to be on the mend. I'm at 4 weeks of PT and have 8 more weeks to go. The swelling is better all the time. I compress, elevate and ice daily. The good news is that I am back on Brutus and have changed my setup. I've got new flat style shoes and boomerang Boomslang spike style pedals. It feels weird, but is starting to feel more normal. I did a jump today, and it felt pretty good. My feet stayed planted and I came down smooth as hell. Things are going to be ok. Just have to learn how to manage this and keep reasonable expectations for myself. As I train up again, I am doing my best not to charge the gate too fast. There are 4 more weeks, before my enduro. Don't care if I come in last. Just plan to train, ride the race and do my absolute best to smile and ride. Pain is often temporary and the pain that might remain reaffirms that you are alive.

  3. I am not. I really need to improve. It is interesting that a previously mountainous cow-orker retired at aboot 60, and when we saw him again a year or so later he was rail thin. He attributed it to less stress and the time to cook and eat correctly. That really opened my eyes, because I am him a year ago - too heavy and a shitty cook. We were dopplegangers in some ways, mainly we were both dissatisfied with the way work was going, both being old school. Yet he was able to retire relatively young and rich, which would have been me had I never gotten married. But I don;t think I would have been good as a lifelong single. Anyhoo, getting back to the OT, I know I have potential because I have great taste and low expectations ( ), and once in a blue moon will knock my own socks off with a great dish, like today's pepper and eggs, a simple but nice one I learned from my mother who does very well at cooking. I know I can do it. Wish me luck.

  4. I am somewhere between Kirby and Cheese. :) Kirby - bedrock of our civilization, dislikes change, devoted traditionalist. :) Me - restless yet lazy, also dislikes change except for the good kind, definitely curious. :D Cheese - creative, curious, restless, but with a streak of nostalgia and maybe a hint of instability. But so were many geniuses and other enigmatic people, so draw your own conclusions.

  7. It is fun to remember the old chains also - around here, Channel, Rickel, Builder's Square, and Hechingers. We still have one of the old independent ones here, near the dam on the lake in the park where I like to walk Ruby. It is comforting to see it remain in existence. But my favourite old time commerce memory is tube testing at the local corner store! What a different world that was! Also nearby was a very well-equipped music store and a shop where you could get scissors sharpened or shoes fixed, and the little greasy spoon that looked and felt just like the one in Dagwood. They had chili dogs to die for. Always bought in twos. My little town was pretty cool.

  8. Even in my thread title I have to edit. It would be normal for me to write, Y'all are high maintenance but no, that's beneath some of you average to below average rated state college attendees. So I went to, You people are high maintenance and again you pictured me as rude and obnoxious. Look, I'm just a simpleton from Greenville, South Carolina who comes to the Cafe seeking love and affection that I don't receive in my everyday life. If it wasn't for MomCheese, I'd be a ward of the state had Mr. Ronald Wilson Reagan not done the right thing and closed down all of the mental health facilities. I need y'all, I mean fine folks. Quit being mean to me. Sincerely, Abram Rooselvelt Cheese

  13. This plastic thing is a terrible problem. It's everywhere. So sad to see the pics. We are making a real mess. We are only a family of two, but we really do try our best to produce very little waste. When buying veggies and bulk items, we always re-use bags. Some are veggie bags from past purchases. Sometimes, we even re-use other types of food bags (bread bags, and other types of food bags that are clean). There is also the problems of coffee shop use, and I try to bring my own mug. If I don't have it, I don't take straws or caps that are plastic. These things are paltry in the realm of our problem, but I believe that things I do have impact however small they are.

  14. Wife: What do you want to do for dinner? Me: Pizza. Wife: We had pizza earlier this week. Me: Fine. Yo Quiero Taco Bell? Wife: Why wont you answer the question? Me: I thought I did. Twice. Wife: We're not going to Taco Bell. Me: Then why ask what I want? Wife: Again,,, where do you want to eat? Me: Fine.. {I'll suggest a half a dozen other places.} Wife: Really? Me: Fine... Where do YOU you want to eat? Wife: Why do you have to be so difficult?

  16. No, no, no! This thread was meant specifically for RR. Although it does apply to 97% of the forum. Including you now that I think of it because I like you. You have a jack russell, terrific baseball playing son, and people actually fight over themselves to have you work for them. People usually pay me to abandon a project and, "just leave."

  22. I did fight in a war. It's highly over rated. I would not recommend it. It is not quite like that pictured in the movies. The wounds hurt. The shit in your pants smells and when you come home many will decide that you were a murderer.

  23. My grandfather fought in the 1st. It was absolute hell. Hideous conditions, hand to hand combat and gasses. I would choose WW2. From the air of course!

  25. Nice memory. I remember going with my dad to a place that sounds similar, a small-ish Northeast US chain called Grossman's. The one we usually visited was down near the railroad tracks in Rensselaer, a small city that had seen better days. It seems like my mom never came when we went there. I remember getting wood, hardware, and insulation there and probably not much else. If we went to Grossman's we would have been out in the truck. Probably stopped at Agway on the way home for a bag of feed.

  28. I have it on very good authority that the antique Parody Meter is soon to get a major UPGRADE!!!!! Huzzah. Apparently, some muckety mucks from the SWCF have been in high level talks for some of the best equipment the forum can afford. This is gonna be a huge weight off all of our backs. Of course, I will continue using my high-tech iPhone app until the new Parody Meter is properly tested, configured, and house trained. I think SW is the guy on the right. Tom

  29. My office door is at the end of the hall, as in if you walk straight down the hall you walk into my office. The view from the hall is of a decently ordered office. Once you break the plane of the doorway, you get a sense of the catastrophe.

  31. This I don't understand. Every spring the man dusts off his bicycle and hurts himself on the 1% incline of his Canadian rails to trails. Ridiculous. Then he tells us, cries the blues, then you guys pray for him like he's about to blast off on the Saturn V. What gives? Maybe politely try to stop him now before he sheers his leg off? Just a thought.
