  2. 131 miles on Sat. Tough ride, lots of climbing. The weather was pretty damn good. Cool temps most of the day, the rain held off, it was very windy. Looking back on what I just rode. That climb was tough, super steep and loose gravel. Lots of cattle The payoff. The single best descent I have ever ridden. The last 21 miles were downhill with a lot of pavement. These switchbacks were so fun. When we came out of the canyon, the winds were crazy. 40-50 mph gusts of crosswinds. At one point I unclipped because I almost blew over. 11.5 hours of riding. Thinking about next year.

  4. Update: Saw head/neck cancer guy. Turns out there are types of adeno carcinoma in the neck. My particular flavor is adenoid cystic carcinoma. The good and bad news is it's slow groaning but a bitch to get rid of. Complicated because it doesn't spread organ to organ (like-like) but travels along the nerves. There is no stage 1, stage 2.... you're just stuck with it and it either takes you in 5-10-15-20-30... years or it doesn't. He says for my age, 35, and medical history, systemic lupus, I have a higher yearly chance of occurrence. Probably 20-25% yearly. He is pretty certain they got the first, source, tumor. Radiation of my neck for 6 weeks to sterilize the area. From then it's scans and exams every 3 months for the next year or two then we can drop to yearly. Upper CT scans for the rest of my life to find when/if new tumors develop. So, fuck cancer.

  10. That guy did it the hard way. Just weld a short bolt to the one that is rounded off, you don't have to mess up a wrench. I would weld a bolt onto the bolt that is broken off down in the threads of the hard plate. Works much better than a drill and an easyout. Faster too when time is money.

  14. Doing a walk through on a remodel of an old warehouse with my boss. There was some kind of room with a 4 foot square hole in the floor and a 15 foot fall to the floor below. A laborer was hauling crap out of the room, my boss growled at the guy to put something over the hole in the floor before somebody fell thru it. We passed through and poked around the job, passing back through, the guy had followed my boss's suggestion, he had put an old glass window over the hole in the floor.....

  16. Got all mine. A lot of coworkers however... Fo2 had a dealer/installer named Ralph. Ralph was a rural guy, farmer, machinist, house builder, car repairer, pool installer (dad's), etc., and was missing the tips of about 3 different fingers due to various mishaps. Anyhow, Ralph and his dimwit helper (DH, ? )were building a house and had a table saw running. Of course, the table saw was without a guard, cuz that safety shit prolly just slowed Ralph down. The helper unplugged the saw while it was running and Ralph, not hearing the spinning blade (prolly due to a lifetime of loud work without wearing earplugs, cuz, you know that shit just slowed him down) set his hand across the spinning blade, thus removing the 1/2 of each of four fingers. Effectively, Ralph could now count to about 6 &1/2 without removing his shoes or pants. The next day at the hospital, DH comes to visit & says, "Hey Ralph, I brought you sumthin." and hands Ralph a small paper lunch sack with, I kid you not, Ralphs's fingertips.

  17. Well, the game warden caught him without a fishing license & Jshartfart told him they were his pet fish & he was just coming back from taking them for a swim. The game warden didn't believe him (who would), so Jsphart is taking one of them back to the water to show the warden that it'll come right back.

  20. One trouble with Me-too and other such movements is that they keep moving the goalposts. What was acceptable, or at least tolerated, decades ago is now a major sin. There are probably things that many of us are doing now which will become an "issue" in the future. I think that victimhood has brought power to many and as one issue is fixed, people will look at changing the norms to keep in power. Now I'm not saying at many of these things are right. Hell knows that I did stupid stuff in my younger days that I regret now.

  26. At home, we tend to make luscious, veggie oriented sandwich. This one has thin slices of smoked schinklespeck (a German prosciutto), sliced radishes, arugula, fresh basil, buffalo mozzarella cheese, tomato, red pepper, with mustard, balsamic vinegar. The ciabatta bread was meh..not as good as other types of ciabattas...Ironically bought from an Italian store. Thankfully a 9-hr. sleep bout, helped digest all this. I do hope to make a smoked salmon version with similar stuff or who knows what dearie will slap in.

  29. I am a Yoko defender. To quote Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The point is, they were once a real powerful group. It's not a stretch to say they ruled the world. And when they broke up everyone blamed Yoko, but the fact is the group split itself apart, she just happened to be there. And you know how it is with kids. They go off to college, they grow apart. Way of the world. Bottom line, the Beatles grew up, matured and grew apart. Yoko probably saved John from the same fate Elvis Presley, Micheal Jackson or Amy Winehouse faced. She was a mature stabilizing influence on him. She was willing to say no to him which is something Presley, Jackson or Winehouse never had.

  30. Duke and Nip like to play when Nip goes for walks outside his kennel. Lad was not impressed when I walked Nip into the front yard. Now, they visit separated by a wire panel. We are keeping him kenneled for a while, until he is use to the place and knows he belongs. The seller suggested this approach and not even trying to work him on sheep for about 2 weeks. We want him to feel wanted without a desire to run away, which would be tragic. The youngest bottle kid always comes to visit when Nip is out walking. Nip does not know about goats, but watches them intently. He definitely watches the sheep and would go to work if not restrained. He is very good about waiting when we give him the command to 'wait' before we attach or remove his lead. He also returns to his kennel when given the 'kennel' command, and is very good about returning to us when given the command 'that'll do'.

  33. The virus-caused post-nasal drip I've been dealing with since Monday seemed to be improving but turned to its worst late Sunday nite. I was coughing so constantly I briefly considered driving to the local hospital's emergency room. But there's no infection in my lungs so as soon as the urge to cough disappates I catch my breath quickly. I did a hot toddy (tea, honey, rum) followed by Musinex DM-Max. I wonder if the combination of Musinex and Sudafed is causing more coughing than I need. I fell asleep for a few hours and awoke without much coughing. As the day has progressed, it seems like I'm slightly gaining on the infection. I'm almost afraid to take any decongestant at this point. I did take my prescribed steroid nasal spray this morning, which seems to be keeping my sinuses from getting stuffed. I have a Neti Pot I probably should have been using. Tonight I'm going to mix up some saline solution (1 tsp table salt into 2 cups boiling water, allow to cool to lukewarm) and flush out my sinuses. It's been killing my appetite and I've been doing breakfast at 9 am and dinner a 6 pm the last few days. Today, it's 4 pm and it's probably a good sign that I'm really hungry but I'm just going to heat up a can of ravioli and then have a turkey/tomato sandwich if I'm hungry later during Monday Night Football. Wish me luck and any advice is appreciated.

  35. I would argue, it's not as difficult as it appears. It's 80% mental. The other 20% is mental. To make the time cutoffs, you just have to average 10 mph. Not crazy fast. I was riding one of the heaviest bikes there. And least expensive. Nothing fancy. I load it up with everything. No drop bags, I carry everything I will need including a water filter. My theory is if shot goes sideways, figure it out. If your rear derailleur goes into your spokes, brake the chain and make a single speed to get your sorry ass home the last 75 miles. From the rules: WE WILL NOT COME GET YOU. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU.
