  1. We got new fork lifts at the shop one time and they had this little tiny lever on the left side of the steering wheel. It looked like your normal turn signal lever. I was hauling a large trim box up to the die shop and it was balanced on the forks of the fork lift. The mag man was behind me on his electric cart and was on my ass the whole way threw the shop. I kept waiting for him to go around me but he just stayed back there. As I approached the die shop I decided I should signal my turn so he didn’t try to pass me as I was making my left turn. I flicked the lever to make a left turn and the forklift went into reverse, the trim box slid off the forks and went ass over teacups down the aisle and the mag man slammed into the back of my highlift. I guess the new forklift didn’t have turn signals, that was an auxiliary shift lever. Who knew? Not me. I didn’t want to drive that thing in the first place.?

  7. ...this was sitting in the garage, unridden for a couple ofyears, because the stem was too long and the paint was horrible. So I repainted it recently, and found a shorter stem. .Different wheels, too, but close to the originals. As it was after touching it up four or five years ago. Today, thanks to the wonders of modern paint technology and the guys who make repro bike decals, in this case Greg Softley of Cyclomondo.

  9. We had an old guy on forklift back when I was younger. He was driving down past the locker room at the end of his shift to park his lift. The new vending machine girl was walking the other direction and he had not seen her before. She was eye candy and he couldn’t take his eyes off her as he slammed straight on into one of the columns that was holding up the roof. The roof didn’t come down but for a moment we were not sure.

  13. If you follow the Allegheny River Trail all the way up to Emlenton you can get hydrated at Otto's bar and then ride back. It makes for a nice day's ride. On the way to Otto's I had to dismount one place going through the disputed area of rocky/muddy trail. On the way back with the help of Otto's courage hydration I didn't even slow down. I think I have seen someone on my computer named Otto Download.

  20. Orlando, FL...Hell no, keep away! There are enough others promoting it. Worse, there is a bed tax on motels, etc, that creates a slush fund to promote it more and the Tourism counsel is loath to allow it to be used for other related purposes, like matching $$ on a new sports arena that would attract more tourist. In addition to tourist clogging up the roads, it also low paying jobs such as housekeeping which makes unemployment rate sound better than it is. The local State university even has a degree program in Hospitality Management. They advertise cruises to the Bahamas departing from Orlando, which I would love to see a cruise ship departing from Orlando. Perhaps they board around the Wet n' Wild Water Park with i's wave mchine. Locals promote it? Hardly. The locals know to keep away from the tourist strip International Drive (I-Drive) and the outlet malls.

  25. ...I'd like to take the opportunity (while we're about it), to point out that my almond croissant from the Freeport bakery is the California equivalent of a Moon Pie from Piggly Wiggly in Greenville. I find that paying attention to these little bits of shared humanity is what keeps us on a level slightly above the animal, and contributes to the overall forum empathy. I'm kind of a jerk, but very big on empathy.

  26. I thought about doing a journal on my bike adventures but kept forgetting to keep it up. I had one for awhile but when a crash put me off the bike for three months I forgot all about it. It seems all I wrote about was my crashes and getting chased down the hiway by a bear.

  29. Staffing again. Manning an electric entrance gate to the campsites in pouring rain. Sleeping on a cot in an open air pavillion tonight. Still raining. Camp Wisdom has been around since the 30s and Dallas has grown around it. The cabin my ancestors built in the 1840s is less than a mile from where I am sleeping. I passed it on the way to camp. I am home, camping where my family farmed and homesteaded 170 some years ago.

  42. Back when I started driving commercially, the first diesel I drove had two handles poking up out of the floor. When I asked the boss if somebody was going to show me how to drive it, his response was "ah, you'll figure it out" I did, but I think I rounded off a few edges doing it. Came to realize later that the boss had no idea how to drive it either.
