  3. It's much easier now that I'm down to one bike. Womaxx's and youngest son's bike are stored in the deepest parts of the secret lab where they have languished for the last year. I ride alone, yeah With nobody else I ride alone, yeah With nobody else Yeah, you know when I ride alone I prefer to be by myself

  6. Driving down a 4 lane, with thank God wide shoulders, Box truck in the left lane driving fast - slow, curb - lines - looked like a cell phone thing. He slowed a bunch and drifted left so I took the opportunity to get by him before he caused an accident. Just as I got next to him he hit the gas and drifted a couple feet into my lane. I went into the shoulder just in time to see a pedestrian in dark clothes walking with his (or her) back to traffic. I leaned on the horn to warn both and had no choice but to stay clear of the pedestrian and hope the truck didn't bounce me into the pedestrian. Not sure how close the truck got, but he heard the horn and swung back in his lane. He must have dropped his phone, the next couple miles he was actually able to drive properly.

  8. ...I had felt this, more or less instinctively, throughout my working life. Now, I can say for certain that the most important thing is to put yourself in a position to decline all meetings.

  9. The dreaded safety meetings. Required attendance, three shifts, Daylight shift stayed over after work, midnight shift stayed over after work, afternoon shift had to come to work one hour early for their meeting. If you miss the meeting they give you a point the same as if you missed work. Enough points and you are fired. It’s easy to forget to come in early, it’s hard to forget the meetings after work when you are the only one walking out to the parking lot after work. I tried to get them to have our meetings after work the same as everyone else. They wouldn’t listen to me. The union got involved the company didn’t want to have their safety man come back in to lead a safety meeting at midnight. A compromise was reached where the times of the meeting didn’t change but attendance was not mandatory. That was pretty much the end of the safety meetings.

  13. It was a lovely afternoon. Dottie was very gracious and kind and his wife was even nicer. She seems like a wonderful lady. I appreciate their taking time out of their day to meet up and I wish I had more time in town.

  19. Unfortunately, for this to work, drivers have to be looking out the windscreen and not at their smart phones.

  22. Actually he won't. I tried at one point but the only money he'd take is the membership purchase (which I think can be annual). But Square Wheels is the benefactor of our feast.

  24. I think about marathoners when I run, and the crazy speeds they run at. I typically run at 6mph, maybe a little faster on good days. The winners run more than twice that. I've set the treadmill at 10mph a few times. I can hold that for 1 minute, possibly longer if I tried, but not much. I can't imagine running 13mph for 2 hours.

  26. What say you peoples. What works for you? https://www.velonews.com/2018/10/bikes-and-tech/the-science-of-being-seen_472689 You’ve likely never heard of Darlene Edewaard. But if you even occasionally ride a bike on open roads with cars, she just might save your life. Edewaard is a Ph.D. candidate in the Human Factors Psychology program at South Carolina’s Clemson University and specializes in studying vision science and then applying that knowledge to transportation safety. “Specifically, I study ways to enhance pedestrian and bicyclist conspicuity on roadways so that drivers can see them from farther distances and avoid collisions,” explained Edewaard. The reason you’re reading about her now is that a few years back, after Trek president John Burke became upset about the increasing number of cyclists being injured or killed by motor vehicles, his company reached out to Clemson, hoping to find someone doing the exact type of research Edewaard specializes in. “Trek visited our lab in February of 2015, and it was clear we all share the same goal — to find ways to save lives,” recalled Edewaard.“The rest fell into place.”

  31. I have Di2 on my new bike, so have dealt with it for a few months now. Bearing in mind that I am not a good cyclist, I can say that I will likely never own another bike without it. Shifting is so clean, quick and exact. It doesn't make me faster, but it works in my favour. I have even been to cross load my chain now and then and it still works perfectly. I have no idea how often I shift, if it hurts, I shift until I feel better. There is no science for my riding, just how much I want to throw up in my mouth

  33. If the meeting starts at 9, do you arrive at 9 or do you arrive early so you are seated and ready to go (or in whatever position the meeting calls for) at the appointed start time? If your gravel ride starts at 9, when do you arrive? Early is on time, on time is late and late is unacceptable. I stand by this.

  37. Yesterday while going through my bank statements I came across a double payment of the same bill, through PayPal an’ all, I thought better of them, anyways, my bank were as good as gold, said the money would be back in my account by 9pm today, and they’d get it back from PayPal. The discovery did not give me any gas, but did cause my hackles to rise a touch, and my lips curled, which normally I like to keep stiff and straight.

  43. Yes, but it's my server, or a rented one. I pay a little more for the space. The software costs a fair amount each year. Because of the inappropriate comments regularly made, I can't run ads. I have two other sites. One makes a little money, pays for the rest. Honestly, I do not mind. You rang. This is very true. It's all a matter of perception. I believe I am insanely wealthy.
