This morning’s sunrise.

Next to me in the bed and then I remember she is sleeping in the recliner in the living room.

Twice now I've been sitting near the emergency exits on a flight. When they ask if I can remove them, I say sure I've done it before. That gets me some strange looks. After a few seconds I tell them that I was an aircraft mechanic and often that's how we get out on the wings.

This is my second cup, my pot is supposed to make 12 cups but it only makes two.

At the bike shop last night. Jens Voigt meet and greet. About 70 people showed up to hear him talk about his life, family and racing career. Very nice guy and entertaining speaker. He signed books, jerseys, posters, even someone’s bike.

The police showed up at my door at 8 am this morning. The ladies at the Wade Hampton Chick fil A asked for a welfare check on me worried I was dead.

I knew my position qualifies for bonus but with me not even being on board a year yet and our company not doing well in 2018 I wasn’t expecting anything. My boss calls me in and in an apologetic manner states they could only give me $2,000 this year but next year should be much better. I told them I wasn’t expecting anything so it’s all good. A nice surprise to an other wise shit day...

Deep ache. Felt like I was sitting on an acorn. Inability to lift my leg high enough under its own power to get in the truck (I had to grab my pant leg & lift it up). Bending forwards while standing rotated the spur through the socket & would light me up shortly afterwards. Unable to sleep on either side. 1st ortho doc had me on 4x Advil, 3 times per day. Cardiologist was not happy. Cycling was not too bad, surprisingly. I was increasingly miserable, I had total replacement ~5 years after initial diagnosis. FWIW, in that first diagnosis, I was bone on bone. Arthritis pain was gone immediately. They had me up walking & up/down stairs 3 hours post-op. PT guy came to the house 3 days/week for 2 weeks. I PT trained like a SEAL. Ditched the walker after the first day, used a cane. I set the watch to 1 hour repeats: got out of the chair; peed; lap around the downstairs; 1 set of all the PTs the PT guy had given me to that point; refilled the water bottle; sat back down; repeat. I was on the trainer ~day 6 post-op. I went back for my 3 week post-op. Doc was impressed. "Can I go back to work?" He frowned, "What do you do?" I told him, more frown. "No lifting >25 pounds", "OK". "No climbing ladders", my turn to frown. "How high can you lift your leg", I lifted the knee above my new hip. He grins, says "you are good to go." Full release to work in 22 days post-op.

Nice. However white matches the snow but not the slush. I've owned both white and black cars and will never do it again. Always look dirty within a couple of days of washing them. Silver hides dirt well.

I think there is significant reason to ground it. Firstly, there is an issue with the MCAS. That is the stall protection system new to the 737 Max 8. There is increasing evidence that flight crews are not being made aware of the system which is a problem. It can be disabled but if crews are unfamiliar with both the problem and the fix, accidents are going to happen. Disabling it, disables the entire stall protection system so that isn't an option as a precaution. If a malfunction happens at a low altitude, the crews may not have the physical opportunity to recognize the issue and successfully disable it. Training is one issue, overall flight crew experience and crew culture is also a huge factor. It may not be a coincidence that third world carriers have experienced the accidents. There have been the same reported MCAS issues in the US but have been handled effectively by the crew. This is probably not type specific experience but overall experience and elementary training. The airlines and FAA are all saying, we know there is an issue and have now trained the crews. That is an unacceptable fix and regulators are probably reacting to the pressure of commerce, both from manufacturers and airlines. I have experienced that willful dismissal by the FAA in my career first hand. They get too cozy with companies the size of Boeing. So, until there is a proven fix, a working algorithm for the MCAS or a means of disabling the system at lower altitudes as a normal procedure, I will avoid the airplane.

Well, my old A5 Specialized Epic turned 7 last year and my LBS called me as they had a buyer. So.. I did a demo ride and have on order, a new Stumpy. Just the Expert 27.5 but that will do for my less aggressive style these days. N=N is also good.

I have never been hip, tragically.

As a former aircraft mechanic, I find it difficult to think that having the aircraft doing something different than the aircrew inputs is not a good idea. How would you like your car to not stop when you press on the brakes? From what I gather, it takes 3 actions to disable the MCAS system. In an emergency, that might be too much to do. From what I read, Boeing wanted to make the 737 Max 8 so similar to fly that the aircrews wouldn't need much additional training. However the larger engines on the Max 8 are moved forward on the wing for clearance which makes things somewhat different to fly. Seems that Boeing wanted their aircraft cake and eat it too.

A couple went shopping at the mall recently but when they got there the car broke down. The husband told the wife to go ahead and take care of the shopping while he took care of the car. Upon returning to the car in the parking lot, the wife found a crowd of people standing around and a pair of hairy legs sticking out from under the car. Although wearing shorts, it became painfully obvious that the private parts attached to the legs were in plain public view. Being a proper wife the woman quickly bent over and readjusted all the parts to be properly out of sight. Upon standing up the woman looked across the car to see her husband standing at the edge of the crowd. He was fine, but the mechanic under the car needed 3 stitches in his forehead.

I'm sure they have nice down vests and jackets if they need them.

Our epic dump from 2-3 weeks ago (24") <reported> is still around but starting to melt off. It to to about 47 yesterday then only down to 36 last night. Should be in the high 40's through the weekend. The big piles at the malls & parking lots will take a month or more to melt off I opened up one drain yesterday. Going to do 2 more today. You know how it's hard to find the drains when they are covered in snow & ice? I use google street view to get pretty close. Yesterday i hit the drain on my first shovel. I was pretty impressed with myself

I'm at one of our sites. The PM comes into the office, opens up his desk drawer to get a snack and discovers that a rodent has discovered his stash. Ate some or all of about 4 Kind bars. Rodent shit all up in the drawer. So, he find an "unopened" bar, opens it & devours it with gusto.

I settled the property damage claim today. Check's in the mail. I don't want to say how much except to say they exceeded the MSRP of $1620. I also get to keep whatever is left of the Cannondale. Going in for a consultation tomorrow with a local power house personal injury firm. I think they will probably even sue Tom.

Airbus was pretty effective in achieving that on the 318, 319, 320, 321 models but some common type certificates yield big differences. I have a 757 type endorsement and can fly the 767 because of it. Same systems but two very different aircraft operationally. I always thought the FAA had an odd approach to common type certificates. My FAA license has a LR-Jet endorsement. That entitles me to fly the Lear 23. 24, 25, 28, 29, 35, 36 and 55. So, unducted jets to turbofans and electromechanical to all EFIS. Makes no sense.

I have a pastor friend that just returned from Africa. He was on that same flight on Monday morning. Ethiopia Airlines still had him on a 737 MAX at that time. Just before they boarded, the equipment was changed to a Dreamliner. It made his flight quite late but I think they all felt better about it. He is home safe and sound.
