  1. here's a picture of my first rescue kitty. She was a stray who wandered around the apartment complex where I lived. She was friendly and I'd feed her sometimes, but was certainly not going to bring her in because I had bad allergies. She'd sit on my patio and meow to get in, but I resisted because of my allergies. Then I ran into the apartment manager who said some people were complaining about the roaming cat and she'd have to call animal control unless someone took the cat in. So the next time I saw the cat, I opened the door and she happily came in and showed no interest in leaving. I loved the way she was digging her claws into the carpet - probably the first time she'd ever slept on anything soft and she didn't intend to leave.

  5. This is way better when you don’t have to go through it alone. I can’t imagine the anguish of the people that have to deal with something like this alone. Give her all the support you can. You’re a good man.

  8. About every 6 weeks. Same lady has cut it for 36 years. We don’t even talk about hair. She cuts and I trust her. Simple to maintain. A quick wash and towel dry. If need be, I can comb it with my fingers and it looks fine.

  20. The lungs I just have to go with. This was all triggered by the mildest of colds 5 weeks ago. I’m hoping to get back to 80% soon with the help of steroids. I have no idea how fast it will progress. It’s been 8 or more years since I’ve been above 80%. At 60% I can still function and walk 10,000 steps in a day. But it’s not too comfortable. With the blood clots, I can take steps to lower the risk, like wearing compression stockings and taking the shots when I travel. I’ll keep a good attitude. Unless it progresses quickly, I should be able to work til retirement.

  24. Needed a couple pieces to finish my rebuild, really want to get that bike back on the road, I can pick them up on my way by tonight. Then let them sit while I replace the alternator on the GTI that crapped out last night. priorities. And my wife needs the truck, so I rode to work in the rain this morning. Tomorrow at lunchtime I have to ride to the parts store for the new alternator that I have no time to work on until Friday night. At least I got the garden planted before the "car won't start" wail.

  25. Loaded the bike this morning to ride to the Metro. Got down the drive, and 50' towards the trail when BAZINGA!!! - my ass came millimeters from getting filled with seatpost!!!!! The bolt on my saddle clamp sheared off and I was left with just the post & rails between me and a rude awakening. It did graze my tender bits, and that took a few minutes to settle down, but otherwise, I am now in the "How do I find a replacement bolt for a 25+yr old part?" boat. I'll have to dig through my bike bits and see what I have gathering dust.

  28. It all comes back (and more) - eventually - and really only hurts 1) folks retiring during the troughs of the waves and 2) folks playing the market and trying to time buys/sells. Ten years from now, assuming under a different administration, these will just be part of the long steady ups and downs (mainly ups) of a stock market. Sure, it is dopey to poke the bear or stir up the hornets, but long term, it will smooth itself out.

  29. I have unlimited garbage pickup with a large tote and if it’s full you can stack as much as you like beside it for pickup. We were generating about one kitchen bag of garbage a week. I have been trying to step up my game. I hate paying for all that pickup and only using a small fraction.

  41. I would consider any dog that is saved from deplorable conditions a "rescue". Dogs that have been abanodoned in unincorporated parts of the city and left to fend for themselves off scraps. Dogs with really bad injuries from fights or traffic accidents or abuse. Dogs found tied to trees or chained to a trailer, etc. with little or no human contact. ALL of these are rescues and my friends save them every day and I foster them when I can. We also work with "surrendered" dogs that left at the pound, many of which would be put down if someone did not step up to find them a home.
