  2. So today, I rode to an Italian store north near the airport which near the edge of city and had lunch of gnochni, a little cream canoelli and coffee. This route partially takes one through light industrial area. Very quiet on weekends. After I bought some schinklespeck (German prosciutto) and Italian prosciutto, fresh arugla, basil, bocinni cheese, etc., I headed back homeward, I ride through a mini river valley park pathway. Now, being on the prairies, it does feel sometimes lacking trees, but anyway.. Here's some local stuff with some facts unique to our local area/history and other stuff that I see along my bike ride today: I confess, this lst photo is out of sequence. I see this church every morning on my work commute ride. It's public art. On my ride homeward from Italian store, there is a major rail line that runs through this park area. CAnadian Pacific Railway has long roots in the development of Canada. It is also responsible for part of development of Calgary...shipping cattle, other goods and oil. The passenger line to our city, was cut over 15-20 yrs. ago. The main head office for CP is in Calgary. So all trains running through, are freight. The competing rail line is CAnadian National Railway... which bought out a major U.S. rail line.. They also have a freight line that runs in city and across Canada. These lines are REAL long at times... 80-100 freight storage cars each time. And daily. Above is a sculpture outside a science educational centre in this long park. Alberta truly does have a major dinsosaur bone excavation sites. They are several hundred km. outside of Calgary. There is a world class dinosaur museum and research facility in Drumheller, Alberta, near the badlands of Alberta. I was a little shocked how sophisticated the research facility. I had no idea. A top notch dinosaur preservation facility of international quality. There are so many fossils and bones that it would take many years to excavate. It always make me gleeful to whizz along a bike path right by a major road. I'm heading towards downtown into another park area. Our major roads are called "Trails", which I think is cool ...sort of a metaphor for the First Nations/native Indian trails.. Deerfoot is historic name...for actually a native Indian who was a runner. Blackfoot is a nod to the name of the major First Nations groups in this part of Canada....as part of the Plains Indian geographic group. I strongly support naming local streets that reflect local history, heritage and culture. I know, the above photo can be abit dispiriting. Will be making a hard right to descend down a short hill back onto pathway system into a park. Ahead the red tower is Calgary tower with downtown skyline. Walking around in a street festival in Inglewood, one of the oldest neighbourhoods (only mid 1800-'s. Calgary is fairly "new" as a white settler town, compared to ie. Toronto or even older, Quebec City.) Street festival included some old cars and trucks. Like this rat truck. Yea, that's my handlebar with my brass construction hat guy bike bell. There was a local fun karoke band. They were belting a Bryan Adams song. This little rocker was so funny and intense. He has great promise since he doesn't care to be laughed at by his peers. Would you have gotten up on stage as kid to act silly like him? Then, I wandered into this bookstore. It's in a historic building. I loved the painting above the basement entrance....mimics the entrance. On my right, is the Bow River. It is often blue-turquoise green most of the time. The river starts several hundred km. north of us in the Rocky Mountains. It runs through our downtown. It did flood in 2013, which evacuated 100,000. I was one of them. Yea, even the prairies are friggin' too flat for me at times, at least we do get brilliant blue skies often ….even also in winter. Our future isn't oil and gas, it should be solar energy. The Peace Bridge. It was controversial locally because of $$$$$ spent building it. But it is now featured part of our international branding in tourism shots....or a more modern view of Calgary. I rode probably a total of only 35 km. This is my city...and Vancouver is my other.

  3. There was more than one beer. It was a delightful non-vegan dinner. Dinner companion was excellent. There was no debauchery. There were no ice cream sandwiches. There are no known photos.

  5. Because the recipe called for an orange flavored liqueur. Fresh peaches have all the peach flavor the pie needs. The lemon juice and orange liqueur complement the peaches

  7. Got out early again - getting to like this ritual. 22.4 miles, a little under 800 climbing feet. I was home by 8. My avg speed was 16.4 mph which is great for me. But I had a couple long flat straightaways where I stayed down in the drops a lot more than usual - I'm sure that's a big part of the increase. Whatever - this 250-lb 47-year old will take it. Hope you all enjoy your Saturday rides.

  11. I used a piece of clearance countertop from Menards and cut it to my length. I slapped a couple 2*6's on the wall to hang it on. (They were scraps). I used some little angle pieces to secure everything. Pretty easy, solid, and effective. The piece under the bench will be my lower shelf.

  12. I just used 2 x 4's for the legs and leg braces and purchased a kitchen counter top (your choice of length) from Home Depot or Lowes. It works great unless you need to bolt a bunch of power tools down on it. In that case you should know that it's particle board and bold holes too close to the edge will break. It does come with a smooth rolled over front edge and a back splash to keep things from rolling off the back. A while back when I cleaned out the bike building shop I took the framework down and put the counter top on the top of 2 end cabinets with drawers to make a sit down desk height workbench. You could use kitchen counter base cabinets (salvage if possible) or in my case some plastic drawer cabinets on wheels. Womaxx's is on kitchen base cabinets with drawers and it's great with a stool to sit on.

  15. I took a test ride. The one I rode has three levels of assist and a max speed of 20 mph. I’d like to try one with a higher max speed. But I’m also concerned about going that fast around car traffic that doesn’t pay attention for bikes. My SIL has one: a Big Cat. She bought it when she lived in Seattle while my BIL was deployed. They moved back to Albuquerque, and riding the ebike was the only way she could keep up with us on a ride. Except instead of riding with us at 15 mph, she would speed ahead and then stop and wait, smirking at us and saying stuff like, “What’s the matter? Are you tired?” But she says bike rides are boring, so we don’t ride together at all anymore. I think she’d have more fun riding bikes if she’d slow her electric ass down.

  17. So Friday hits, and I take off from work a bit early and leave Manhattan to go get RO from summer camp in Brooklyn, and we take a train back to Manhattan. Lots of trains this weekend. We make some food and watch un-dubbed episodes of Ultraman from the early 60's, RO has no idea of what they are saying, but it is all funny. We have names for all the characters. There is Captain Drama, because he is the captain and everything he says or gestures is completely exaggerated. Laughing Boy is the tallest and is always laughing or completely crestfallen, as he screws up, a lot. The only chick is only referred to as "My girlfriend" or "Your girlfriend", and she is never taken seriously because she is a Japanese chick in the early 60's. There are other less interesting characters. The special effects are horrible but it doesn't matter. I loved this show as a kid, and even went to the emergency room one time because of it. RO is oddly fascinated with the show, and also the ER story. Next morning, fruit and TJ's chicken nuggets form the basis of a complete diet. We take a train to Brooklyn for a birthday party for Charlotte, some random neighborhood girl we met just walking around one day when RO was tiny. The party is 'meh', it is at a miniature golf place. Kids run around. The venue apparently is tasked with feeding the kids, and take a minimalist approach to that with either water or apple juice, and a slice of pizza that was 1 1/2" wide at the crust, just a long sliver, only enough for one slice per kid. Pretty weak, but hey, they sell snacks (imagine that) and all the kids are hungry as hell, and this is where the Doritos come from. There is a pirate theme, and the eyepatches and cardboard pirate hats are the big hits. After the party we go to McDonalds that was close by and get a McFlurry to share. Back to Manhattan. We go to the apartment to miss the heat of the day and make food, then decide to go to a close-by playground in Central Park that is near the carriage horses we feed carrots to. Bit of background here, RO always wants to take a carriage ride, but the price is nuts, $120 for 40 minutes, or a short 12-15 minute ride for $60. I don't have carriage money at this point, but I have previously talked to my parents about what RO would like for her birthday, and suggest a carriage ride for their present, and they believe in the inherent goodness of this plan. I have told RO a few times previously that a carriage ride is not in our foreseeable future, so she has no idea what is about to happen. We eyeball horses and I ask her "if we were ever to take a carriage ride, which horse would be best?" We pick one, then I spring the news that Grandma and Grandpa are getting her a ride and she should climb on. At first she doesn't seem to believe it, then the first melty smile that you see in Cheese's post when she gets what is going to happen. This is what little kid dreams are made of. The carriage ride is fun as hell, remarkable nice, actually. People are waving at the beaming child, the driver says RO can come up front is she wants, and she does. The horse is named "Punch". I suspect a beaming and waving child on a carriage ride is good advertising, btw. The short ride ends and we get a few pics. If I win the lottery, I am going to take lots of carriage rides, it is a wonderful way to travel. <continued below>

  18. Great pictures and narrative A lot of what I love about this site is seeing the world through the eyes of others, not strangers, but people I sorta know, with a different perspective and background. Thank You for posting that.

  25. And this is my commuter/vacation bike. I bought it before we went on a long vacation that included Cuyahoga, Erie Towpath, Acadia, Quebec. mr. called it “the bike we didn’t need” because I could have ridden my three speed at all of those places. So, I lovingly refer to it as the BWDN. Last Christmas, he gave me a Brooks saddle and cork handlebar grips. It weighs 34 pounds, and today I rode it up and down hills for 25 miles.

  33. We all had chili dogs for supper. Hebrew National beef hot dogs on the grill, largish hot dog roll, chili without beans, sauteed onions and peppers, pickles and some melted cheese for those who wanted it. Served them all on red and white checkered papers in plastic baskets just like the restaurant. Life is good.
