  1. So.... I just accepted a position for a global company, almost 90 years in business, as a senior engineer for their BI/DA Client operations. Super big role and a huge jump in responsibility. I know have major excitement and fear I'm going to fail spectacularly.

  2. I may have gone insane. My co-worker has this little girl. She Is about 7, I believe. She wants to learn to ride and she is not learning with her Mom and Dad. She has some behavior problems and a temper. This little girl feels like a failure. She has trouble riding her bike and is very fearful. She actually wrote in a recent school report about what a failure she is on the bike. Yes, she actually wrote about how she wants to ride like her sister, but she is a failure. Wow. Poor thing. I am going to pick her and her bike up, and her booster seat...we are going to the school yard to do some laps and learning. ? I'll give her a few hours here and there. Any tips, parents? HAHA

  4. My recliner chair was so old that the foam under the seat was falling onto the floor under the chair in hard dry chunks. This made me feel uncomfortable. We went to a furniture shop that we've always shopped at and looked around at new recliners. They were a lot more expensive than they used to be and that made me nervous. I found one though that wasn't too expensive and it was also a powered chair. This made me feel better. It was the first pace we went though so we opted to look around some more on another day. This made me feel confident. Today we went to a famous furniture store that is supposed to have good prices and an excellent reputation. This made me feel excited. The store had both an outlet warehouse and the main store. This made me expectant that we would find a good chair. The outlet store was horrible. We were mugged by salesmen and then I noticed that much of the product had no prices on them. As a former commission salesman this made me suspicious as I wasn't in a mood to haggle. They didn't have anything I liked. This made me sad so we went next door to the main store. We were mugged by salesmen and much of the stock had no price on it. I saw a chair I liked but without a price. This made me angry and I left the store. This made me feel depressed and I didn't want to shop for a chair anymore. I just wanted to stop by the hobby shoppe and get a can of paint and go home. At the hobby shoppe my friends told me about another furniture store not to far away. At this point I was tired of shopping but womaxx talked me into going there. Inside the store was very nice. A pleasant sales lady showed us where the recliners were and said she'd be back in a while after we had tried them all out. We found a couple of chairs we liked but we felt anxious about the price. Everything had large price cards with all the information one could need. This made me appreciative. The pleasant sales lady came back and told us ........... by the way, you can have 30% off on any of these as you just walked in on the last day of the sale. This made me so happy that we bought a chair. The moral of the story. There are stores that suck and there are other stores that provide a good shopping environment. Thursday when my new chair gets here I will feel very happy.

  5. They go from a band of happy neanderthals swinging hammers, to a clean, ready to work bare studs remodel, in about 15 seconds, and they smile the whole time. I had the tub out, all I had to do was tidy up a bit. It was a long hard day, swinging a hammer, fussing with pliers, even tried a grinder. The problem was old style hard coat plaster, specifically the metal corner reinforcement. Trying to attain a clean corner to transition to drywall was a son of a bitch. Had to cut the metal corner stuff length wise and not screw up the adjoining surface too bad. I tried a grinder with a cutting blade, the fumes were so bad I ran out of the room, don't know why, the combo of plaster and metal really made some smoke. Ended up using a hammer, a couple different chisels, and a pair of dykes to cut the metal. My neck, wrist, and hands took a beating. There is a reason construction workers tend to be young. Anyway, the shower surround is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. I have to attend a funeral and won't be there. A couple pics. Wish I had taken a couple with the tub out & mess remaining. Amazing how much work to accomplish so little Oh, almost forgot, used the shopvac to finish cleanup. Forgot about throwing away the filter that time I sucked up the water. Looked like a volcano, ran out of the room holding my breath again.

  7. (Can someone please pin this for a few days to get some good replys) Next year is our 30th wedding anniversary and WofZ and I are hitting the road in June. She wants to visit a childhood penpal in Colorado, so we are looking at Washington, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Colorado, then heading back west through Utah, maybe Arizona, Nevada California then up the Pacific coast to home. We are taking our camping gear, canoe and equip, hiking gear and our road bikes. Camp a few days, a couple hotel nights, back camping...., that sort of thing. We love day hikes, and paddling and doing some exploring on our bikes. We are not opposed to wilderness canoe camping as well. All we know for sure is we are hitting the Badlands and Yellowstone. If you know of any local knowledge "must-dos" let me know. We much prefer a local hiking trail with amazing views to going to see the worlds largest ball of string. Our actual route is early in the research phase so nothing is off the table. Any suggestions would be greatly appe..., apresh....... appreschia......., I woukd like it a lot.

  19. I had just left my driveway when to my left I saw a woman with a baby stroller. I politely waived but I'm too blind to notice if she responded. I had a 2 house lead with a slight uphill to the school so I put it into Cheese overdrive to avoid the risk of having to share further pleasantries. A school bus was turning left at the stop sign and I had to stop and she caught up with me. In the stroller was a tiny chihuahua! Very attractive lady and very nice. She introduced herself by saying, "My husband and I just bought the Kathryn +%/÷×=% house. So I met my neighbor who stole my house. She smiled when I told her they had broken my heart. She also mentioned they had ran into several major expenses getting things right with the house. I got to pet Bella and was invited over anytime for tea. She also mentioned they have two daughters at Furman. ? We said goodby and I proceeded to the hill which beat me to a pulp this morning.

  28. condensate emergency drain. Mine vents outside and into a floor drain, but the drain from the unit is also vented into the attic... So they could get in the drain outside and come out the vent in the attic. I find that this works well to trap them. Take a water bottle and cut the top off about 1/3 of the way down. Turn it over and insert the cut off top back into the bottle to make cone or funnel. Pour in some apple cider vinegar and dish soap. Set this where you see the flies. They will fly down the funnel and get stuck in the vinegar soap mix and die.

  35. Loving the cooler morning temps. The leaves are coming down all over my yard and the gutters on the rear of my house need to be cleaned. I installed gutter guards in the front before my surgery, but didn’t get the rear ones done... Also, we are attending lots of end of summer and fall festivals. Lots of fun.

  36. I got a "new" HP certified-refurbished laptop. It was $499 from Focus Camera, a 3rd Party vendor through Walmart.com, has a 17.3" screen, quad core 2.7 to 3.6 GHz processor, 2 TB hard drive (I do home video editing and keep a lot of files on the computer as well as 200 MB of chess stuff), 12 GB RAM, Windows 10, WiFi, Bluetooth, a DVD burner (used mainly to convert old family videos to files) and all the bells-and-whistles in terms of ports, front-facing camera, etc. When I got my last, very similar laptop from Focus Camera, I had to send the first two back before I got a working one - one wouldn't boot up the setup screen and then they sent me one with the wrong power plug - so I'm happy this started up with the standard initial set-up screen, etc. and seems perfect. I only used that company again because I couldn't find the same quality computer for less than $900 elsewhere. I use Firefox browser, had exported my "Bookmarks" to a file, then imported them after I installed Firefox on my new laptop and it even installed all the Addons I have on the other one like Adblock Plus, and Smart RSS. So I'm in business and can slowly add the other software at my leisure. I thought I had destroyed the sound system on my laptop for a couple days until -as I mentioned in a recent post- I discovered Windows 10's "troubleshooter" had disconnected it by deleting the driver. In the meantime I had ordered a new laptop for $499, not waiting to see if I could fix the existing one because it's really hard to find a refurbished laptop available with 2 TB storage that meets the requirements I listed - most of the time I can't find one listed on Walmart.com or other cheap places or else its close to $1000. New they're around $1600. So, after fixing the sound on my laptop, which has been heavily used and is getting beat up - some of the names of the letters have worn off the keyboard, the DVD drive's outside part is loose, etc. - I wondered if I should keep the "new" HP certified refurbished laptop - it is passed back through the assembly line and looks like new - not a scratch on it. It also has some upgrades over my beat-up one. I'm trying it out for a couple weeks to make sure everything's working perfectly, and then putting it away until my starting-to-fall-apart previous laptop (similar numbers but slightly slower processor) reaches back-up-only quality, probably less than a year. Of course, the disadvantage is that the warranty will expire before I use it much, but the refurbished computers only have a 90 day warranty anyway and it's been my experience that if they work fine for a week, they're good to go for the long-term.

  37. Yeah, I was surprised. I like Southern Tier, don’t think I’ve had one I didn’t like. Will keep researching. I like Dogfishead for their creativity. Local microbrewery in the South Hills has a Orange Cream “dreamcicle” Double IPA. I ordered a pint, even after tasting a sample. Strangely good. And potent.

  38. By the time I got back to Franklin trailhead I only needed 16 more miles. My friends Andrea and Matthew had to leave to go pick up their daughter so I went ahead and hammered the last sixteen miles out to get it done. I rode down to Oil City, back up to the Franklin trailhead and went another three miles past my car and back to give me 70 miles for the day.

  40. I think most, if not all, experience depression to varying degrees and at differing times throughout their lives. I’ve had mine. There have been times when I honestly believed that those whom I care about would be better off without me around. There have been several times in my life when I’ve honestly considered pulling the trigger. But when it came right down to it, I did not have the courage to do so. And upon deeper, and very honest, reflection later when I was in a better state of mind, I discovered that I truly didn’t want to die. I’ve written poetry over the course of my life. If someone who didn’t know me were to read it all, they’d get the impression that life was one hell of a roller coaster ride with souring highs and intense soul crushing lows. For me, writing is a way of release. It is cathartic. And it allows me to see things later for what they were when I wrote them. Here’s what I have discovered. Life IS a roller coaster ride. There are extreme highs and extreme lows. And there are times when there seems to be nothing. But the beauty outweighs the despair. The glory of living is greater than the doldrums of reflection. When I listen to the laughter of one of my grandchildren, or feel the warmth of my wife as she lies beside me at night, or listen to the nighttime chorus on a late autumn night or watch the sun come up in the morning in all his blazing glory as I drive into work, I am thankful for the breath I took that moment. My wife and I were driving home Saturday through the remnants of a passing shower. And we were treated with one of the most vibrant rainbows I’ve seen in a while. And I commented to her, “though I understand the science behind such a beautiful vision, I am thankful for the magic my heart still feels at the experience of such a display!” And we were out walking later that evening about midnight, and gazing up into the silver sheen of this harvest’s full moon I commented to her, “I pray I never lose the wonder I feel every time I witness this.” SW, I hear the arias and of the great sopranos, and I literally weep. The beauty overwhelms me. I view the Shenandoah valley from atop one of the surrounding peaks in the park, and my heart soars. Literally, it feels as if it will leave my chest. When the owls begin their calling in the late evening hours and I am listening, I am transported to another time, when the world was young. I hear the ancient sounds and they fill my soul with awe. SW, I believe that there will be wonderous beauty the likes of which “no eye has seen or ear heard”, waiting on the other side of this mortal life. I believe I have the promise of my heart’s desire and I look forward to that. However, I also believe deeply that the beauty I seek in life exists right here as well, that the glory of living is the breath of the One from whom life flows to begin with and that breath exists in all of creation. I cannot look upon the wonders of nature or the beauty of the cosmos or even the great works of humankind and not see the hand of the Creator. Yes, there is ugliness in life. There is atrocity that spans the record of humanity. And it would be truly egregious to deny that such exists. But even in our tribulation, I see the beauty of the human spirit and the sheer will of life itself to survive and flourish and to create. And I see hope - the hope of restoration of all things in the One I call Christ. Yes, even when I am down now, I am thankful for the breath I take; the life I have been given and they marvelous creation that surrounds me. I choose to see these things. I hope you can find it as well. Peace.
