  1. I took Friday off from work and headed out to Minnewaska State Park in New York. This made me happy. I got to the park and was a little lost about where to park and what to see since I handn't done much research. This made me think of SuzieQ since the Park was her stomping grounds and she would know all the good places. Nevertheless I found a pretty lake which made me peaceful until they started to do some blasting for some Park Project they are building. Then I drove to a different part of the park and walked to a pretty waterfall. This made me feel peaceful again. When I finished at the park I drove to near where I was staying that night and found two restaurants. One was very popular and the parking lot was full with cars taking up all available spaces on the road near it. The other was across the street and had a totally empty parking lot. I, of course, went to the empty restaurant and was the only one there. This made me feel like I'd chosen the road less traveled. I actually had a nice little lunch and felt pleased with my decision. Then I went to a nearby farm sanctuary and looked at all the animals. This made me feel very happy. Then I went into the sheep and goat barn and saw that they were all standing around outside their gated area and they were staring at me. This made me feel a little scared. They looked tough. Then a goat started moving and all the sheep followed the goat to a nice pasture area where they grazed and relaxed. This made me very happy again. Then I checked in at the Inn and relaxed for the rest of the night. In the morning, I went down to the communal kitchen area for breakfast. There was some sort of vegan hash which I avoided but a delightful apple crisp and some granola. During breakfast you had to chat with everyone else who was staying there which made me a little uncomfortable, but they all turned out to be nice. This made me feel relieved. I spent the rest of the day touring around and even went back to the lonely restaurant for dinner, although now it was fairly crowded which made me feel better. Then I spent the rest of the night sitting on the balcony and reading which made me feel relaxed and happy. I posted some pics of the adventure in the September photos thread; The End.

  2. I worked. It was a fun day though. We flew to South Bend early morning. We went to the Studebaker museum, had a nice lunch and went to the ND/Virginia game. The museum has sure improved over the years. This was the first college ball game I have attended in the US. The crowd was amazing and the home team win always helps with the mood. I still remain astonished though, that between 200 and 300 private jets flip in and out for a college ball game. That is significant enthusiasm. After the game, we went out for dinner with the passengers and flew home. A long day, but loads of fun.

  4. I've been mostly absent, that will remain for at least two weeks. Then I go away on vacation and will get more caught up on the site. I have dozens of posts to skim, I mean read. P&R is gone, I think that is a done deal. For the most part you've all done well in not posting P&R in The Cafe. I appreciate that. I also understand P&R is woven into ours lives and it can be hard to not let it seep into a post or two. I appreciate the efforts you all make keeping it civil here.

  5. We're in !! Was a long hard day, approx. 7 to 7, had some very good help and that saved the day. Can't find anything, took an hour to find the shower curtain, 10 minutes to find the towels, a shower never felt so good. Will be a lot of arranging & rearranging trying to get the layout we want. The missus says it feels like home

  8. I'm wandering around in a stupor. Picking shit up, trying to think of where it should go, putting it down. I did find all the essentials for coffee tomorrow Gonna be a big adjustment. there is a lot more space, but I question how the space is assigned. We'll work it out. May be some remodeling coming....cause the bathroom has gone so well...

  9. For what it's worth, I don't treat my car very well either. I go through periods where I'm better about what I eat, but when I work long hours I get lazy and pick up what's easy. But on the plus side, I don't have any chuck roasts that have been frozen for 3 years, so I'm not tempted to eat that.

  10. Room was hot. I got hot flashes and about fell over. I was so sweaty that we could pay that catch the pig game, where you try to catch a wet muddy pig. aside from the heat thing, it was very grounding. My instructor talked about kindness. When we are personally stressed we tend to be short or rude to others. It is important to be mindful about how you make others feel. Namaste

  15. Surfing in conditions way above my skill set & nearly drowning is one. Getting shot at I guess wasn’t so bad for me as they missed... Serving warrants on drug houses was a kick in the pants but I survived those too. Oh I was in a UH1 that fluttered out of the sky & crashed. Scary but I lived through that too... Tumbled out of a another Huey and fell about 15’ hurt like hell when I landed but I survived that... I guess having an office job is probably worse for my health than anything noted above.

  19. I like that results to races and Strava segments are broken down into age groups. If they didn’t break them down into age groups I would never win anything anymore. Some of the hillclimbing I do I get disappointed that I place so far down on the list of fastest times, them I check my age group and find I was the only one in my age group still climbing hills.

  20. So I guess I have to zip tie that up too, but I am oot of zip ties and the lhs is closed, so I have to either find some or have to make the long 4 mile trip to Home Depot. I guess I need to put zip ties on the list with terlet paper and beer as something to never run outta.

  21. Maggie and I went hiking this weekend, exploring some waterfalls in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. We had a blast, walked many many miles, often on treacherous terrain, met lots of people, (its true what they say about meeting people with a puppy on a string) and we got to see nine beautiful waterfalls in two days. Maggie was a trooper and a great trail leader, unless one of those UP Red Squirrels caught her attention. Mag was so pooped she slept half of the five hour drive home, and then came home and crashed on the couch. Each pic is from a different set of falls. I have more, but need to load them when I get a chance. I guess if this is my new hobby, I might need to get a better camera then my phone.

  23. I put the third coat of joint compound on the bathroom today, which got it where the first coat should have, so the bathroom job is a bit behind. Everything is a bit behind where I thought I could get it. But it is all usable, we have lived in construction projects before. Of course we were younger then.

  27. Yesterday I looked at the road cams. (I'm in Portland now) Bend was dry. The pass was wet & 32.2 degrees. So probably icy. And the road up at Mt Bachelor was white. Right now Bend is wet & 34 degrees. The pass has snow beside the road & 28. And Bachelor road is snow covered & 25 degrees. Bachelor is almost 2000' higher than Bend

  31. Probably sin exposure. Lots of it. Never smoked or dud drugs with any regularity, but I drink alcohol. A friend of mine with lots of food allergies said I should drink straight tequila. But every time I’ve done that, it’s been bad for me.

  32. That's all good info. There are trends and fads that come and go. But let's be honest, as a nation, we eat like shit. Too much fast food. Too much garbage from the packaged food industry. Boxes that say natural, fat-free, gluten free etc. There are no health claims on an apple or broccoli. Whole foods are better than things from a can or box. And they taste better. Cooking from scratch tastes better than a frozen or prepared meal. We are willing to cut costs on our food, but pay it back in prescription meds. High blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol. I don't cut corners on food. I like to eat well. Today, I made sauerkraut, beet kvass, bread, and oat milk. I'm working on some kimchi and I'll make a chicken stew. My freezer is full of whole chickens from a local farmer and sockeye salmon from the Pride of Bristol Bay.

  35. I found s large corned beef briscut in our downstairs freezer. I didn’t remember buying it. It turned out it had been in the bottom of the chest freezer for ten years. I put it out for the feral cats but they wouldn’t eat it. It was gone in the morning, night critters are not picky.

  36. I've spent at least an hour, off & on looking for the container of towels, still haven't found it. ?‍♂️ Put a lot of stuff away, it looks a lot more home now. ? The kitchen needs gutted and start from scratch, how the hell you cook in that maze is beyond me. This house is much bigger than the old one, probably 400 sq ft more of living space, plus 1600 or so sq ft of garage / basement. Looking at how much we've filled it up, I am amazed that all this crap fit in the old house I have to admit this house doesn't make the most efficient use of space. But it is nice to have a little extra room. I could swing cats in damn near every room ?

  39. I made it to Sunday. No stomach ache, no intestinal cramps, no diarrhea. The chuck roast is so tender it falls apart with a fork, so I'm going to shred some of it and have open-faced gravy bread & beef on onion rolls with baby gold potatoes and carrots, quickly nuked during a break in the Browns at Ravens game.

  42. Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. i try to do this and provide variety. Tonight we had grilled potatoes, half a grille dinner peach each, Mr. Aire had a beef patty. I had a grilled portobello mushroom. Some steamed broccoli with lemon. It was satisfying.

  43. The meat, potatoes and carrots I eat won't have much sodium and how much I consume will depend on how much of the gravy I spread over the meat and potatoes. The recipe says 1609.5 mg Na but I'm guess I'll have closer to 1000. Either way, I'm not worried about it unless my ankles begin swelling, which happens at times when I consume too much sodium on top of some water-retaining meds I take. Right now my ankles are skinny. I'm on the side of recent studies that say that people with no heart, etc. problems generally have no problems with less than 5000 mg Na/day except in countries like China where 5000 mg/day and more is common and that low levels of salt actually led to more heart attacks and deaths, suggesting moderate salt intake may be protective (https://www.theguardian.com/science/2018/aug/09/salt-not-as-damaging-to-health-as-previously-thought-says-study and https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/08/180809202057.htm). It's a controversial issue. Even the U.S. National Institutes of Health says, "Recent studies have reached almost shockingly divergent conclusions about the pros and cons of sodium restriction." (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4684107/). Since it's not clear which way errs on the side of safety, I'll let my ankles tell me if I've had too much sodium.
