So..plan to stay safe, and stay home. My painter is coming on Wednesday...so I will be moving stuff..doing laundry and getting in a walk or maybe a bike ride.

  7. The big challenge is that NOTHING seems to teach anyone anything We had the black guy killed after being chased by the two white guys (sheriff friends). Nothing happened...until video and outcry, but still very close to the "good old days". TBD on the final outcome. We had the EMT gal shot dead in her own apartment. We'll see where this goes, but that no body cam footage is available (to my knowledge) is damning - either it exists and is withheld or it doesn't exist, but should, or it doesn't exist & a police force in America thinks that's a good idea. Finally, this choking to death incident by a cop. Seems every year we repeat the problem, and then act surprised that folks are restless. Angry. Irrational. At some point, this killing - for no real reason - has to end. Period.

  12. In a Psychology class I took in college years ago the professor spoke of a intelligence continuum. In that, don’t look at intelligence as a straight line where the highly intelligent are on one side, the insane another. Intelligence is a circle where as the super intelligent and insane are both at the very top of the circle and those with average intelligence at the bottom. And being so close together on the continuum there is a lot of cross over between the highly intelligent & insane. I often think of this lecture with guys like Elon Musk.

  13. Police in a nearby town have arrested a fireman who assaulted 4 women back 2001/2008 using DNA from the scene of the crime. They stuck with a cold case till modern tech was able to be used.

  15. State Farm has agreed to pay $23,000 more to rebuild my house than my house (alone without the property) would have sold for before the fire, so I'm basically happy. That plus the excellent compensation (new, not depreciated) price for the piano, clothes, tools, furniture, etc. destroyed inside made my doctor say he's now thinking of setting his old house on fire. The builder and case manager are going to look over all the 164 pages of the assessment and haggle over anything that looks wrong. A lot looks more than right. For example, State Farm is paying to improve the forced-air furnace ductwork to better than before - up to current code - throughout the first floor, 2nd floor, and basement. Because of that, it won't cost much more for me to add and pay for central air conditioning, which I didn't have before. There are a number of things I'm adding, (dishwasher, garbage disposal, better stove, fridge/freezer, washer, dryer, and more). There is also an old, falling-apart backyard screenhouse they will tear down and haul away for me. In the corner of the backyard, years ago we had a 13' x 12' concrete slab poured when a neighbor's new driveway didn't need all the concrete in the cement truck. I've already got the plans, materials list, and instructions to build several styles of a new shed (I'm leaning toward one similar to the gabled roof one at the bottom) there next year, maybe 10'x 9', leaving a 3' buffer with the neighbors' fences. I was able to save most of my mother's excellent doll collection and dropped it off at my sister's today after giving one piece to a neighbor who wanted anything of my mother's from the house. The rough estimate on completion of the rebuild is Jan. 1, though I expect more like Feb.1 to Mar. 1. At least things are now rolling along. Meanwhile, State Farm will continue to pay the rent on my luxury apartment.

  16. ..in Ontario and they are doing the same in Quebec. It started as relief for the workers but they are remaining for now until there is resolve to inhumane conditions the elderly are being exposed to. Then it dawned on me, wait! This is medical care, it is just long term. Why are these not government facilities like hospitals? Is this yet another tier of healthcare predicated on socio-economic conditions? I think we should commit to taking them out of private hands where there has been abuse and neglect and make them part of a cradle to grave healthcare system the government so proudly states we have. We don't. Not even close. My rant for the day. BTW, it has been this way under all political parties so it isn't a partisan problem.

  23. As I race closer to needing senior care, I realize how important it is to have relatives who are alert and can advocate on your behalf. Unfortunately for me, I don't have kids, but I do have some hope for my nephew and niece. This also makes me realize how fortunate it is to have people at the facilities who are genuinely caring and compassionate. Another reason why the people living in Petite's senior living facility are so lucky to have her.
