  6. That flag is racist. I’m a seventh generation Georgian. One can still be proud of being from the South while recognizing the meaning behind its iconography. I have seen those who wave it all of my life. It was carried by the klan as they marched through the streets in my hometown as a child. It was on the lapel of J.B. Stoner a church bomber whose newspaper, The Thunderbolt, was published here. He was a regular fixture in town until his arrest. William Tappan Thompson, who was instrumental in incorporating the battle emblem into the confederate flag, which he called the, white man’s flag, wrote the following about it. As a people we are fighting to maintain the Heaven-ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race; a white flag would thus be emblematical of our cause. It was disavowed by the Scouts 31 years ago. It goes on and on and on. Posting that “Only in America can an ethnic group have black awareness month, a black holiday, black only colleges, black only dating sites, black only bars and clubs, and turn around and call everyone else racist” does not leave much room for interpretation on his views on diversity. Sending that iconography and language to the very kids he leads is the teaching of acceptance of racism. That behavior would get you fired in the corporate world. His speech is purposefully divisive, and reckless. No, I have not confronted him. I don’t give a damn to hear that heritage not hate claptrap yet again. But he’s standing on a soapbox screaming at the top of his damn lungs begging for attention. And a racist Scout leader is the very kind of thing that will go viral. In today’s world that brings protests. The Scout lodge Is located is on the grounds of my late mother’s church. That church was my mother’s world. If a protest breaks out there it will forever brand the troop and that fragile congregation racist, possibly folding both. And damned if I will allow the hubris of one man bring harm to what my mother loved. He is welcome to spew whatever he wants, it’s his First Amendment right to do so. But speech comes with consequence. He wants attention, I made sure that those he is directly affecting have his attention, before it becomes widely heard in the community. It will be settled with a meeting and a conversation. There is no need for me to confront this idiot, he put himself in this spot. And now it is up to the church and troop to decide if he is worth the liability he brings. Sorry my post is hot.

  7. Wow that’s weird. Maybe you are just a freaking monster and put out too many watts blowing the spokes? As some have mentioned maybe having some more robust wheels built from a reputable builder (ahem @Rattlecan) is the way to go?

  8. Actually, my mental and physical health has been improving throughout the rise of covid. It seems working from home and social isolation is actually good for me! I've lost over 50 lbs and been keeping it off, while transitioning to a healthier, whole foods and low sugar diet that's actually quite satisfying. I ran half marathon about a month ago, and am riding as good as i ever have... I'm probably in better shape than I have been since my early 20s and it feels great. Mentally, I've mostly shaken the funk I was in the second half of last year, beginning of this year. Online therapy, diet, exercise, exploration of philosophy and spirituality have combined to give me a much more positive and stable base mood. I still have bad moments, even days, but they don't drag me into the depths these days.

  10. The local police blotter has reports from several victims of a cyclist on the W&OD trail in Vienna VA who is smacking females on their behind while riding past them. Police are warning trail users to be on the lookout. No description of the suspect was provided in the article. One problem I have with the article was the use of northbound and southbound. The trail runs East-West people! I wasn’t on the trail Monday and have an alibi. @Razors Edge where were you Monday afternoon?

  17. And this makes sense to me. Thank you for the explanation, Allen. And honestly, knowing this, I agree with your position to not confront him. I probably would have, but that’s the obstinate nature of me. 😉 I actually confronted someone very similar at a family gathering many years ago, who was spewing racial bias/rhetoric. He was not adept at arguing/debating his beliefs and was quickly overwhelmed by my persistent remonstration of his prejudicial viewpoints. He reacted angrily and I still didnt back down. Eventually he got up and left. He’s not spoken to me since. For the record, I despise racism - in all its forms.

  18. When the person in question signed up to be a Scout leader, he agreed to abide by a set of rules and regulations that his posts make it appear he is not adhering too. I fully support Allen in his methodology of letting the Scouts and the Church that sponsors and owns that Scout unit do what they agreed to do, and that is select leaders that align with their values and get rid of those who don't. This is not about Allen and this guy. This is about this guy leading yout in a group that is by it's very nature, designed to promote inclusiveness for all. One reason the Scouts, and other organizations wear uniforms is to make everyone equal that wears it.

  21. Bottom line here is that this is about use of the land you own. You are under no obligation to let anyone use it and you have no obligation to take a political stand in order to say thank you but I have changed my mind about you using my land. You have taken more steps than some to help this organization see a change is needed. In the end, you are not a member of the Scouts. You don't have a child in Scouts. You have shared your grievances with both the church that endorses the group and the leadership in the organization. They are the ones that must push change. I think you have gone above what you needed to do. You could have just said no about land use without explanation. Talking to the guy may put you or your land in harm's way. No reason in the world that you have to have a direction confrontation with someone over an issue that needs to be solved by the organization that gave him a position of power.

  22. Looks like the Onda fork designer was let loose on the entire frame. Don't mind the fork, or have gotten use to it over the years. Also, doesn't come in red or blue - just BoB and light and dark greens. Also just noticed the current Dogma F12 has stepped away from the bowed topbar to a notable downturn at the 2/3 mark. All the more reason for a lugged carbon, made in Italy with a choice of handpainted colors and patterns, C64.

  23. When I was young I was violently allergic to poison ivy. Back then medical advice was to take a pill to aid in gaining some immunity. The pill was of course a mild extract of poison ivy as that was the state of medicine back then. The pill itself was a royal pain in the ass to put it mildly. Ralph, I'm sure he'll give you the name of the spray when he gets Round to it.

  24. That's true.. but I still can't imagine how that would feel. I don't want to know... Speaking of skirts... We had an engineering class back in college. We were given an assignment was to write a paper (or report, etc..) about a topic in the class. For those who don't know.. writing papers and being an engineering student is almost mutuality exclusive. Of course someone asked how long does this report need to be. I'm sure we all expected 500 words. etc.. The professor paused and told the class; "The report needs to be like a woman's dress, long enough to cover the essentials, short enough to be interesting." That's probably the ONLY thing I still remember from that class.

  25. My high school friend had a Chevelle. He was very good at build engines that made lots of hp. It I recall it was a 396 with dual 4 barrel carburetor with tunnel ram intake, It idled at 2400 rpm and it would rev close to 7500+ rpm. Geared low, a 5:38 rear end. When he raced it with drag slicks it would lift the front wheels off of the ground. This guy could shift a 4 speed nearly as fast as any modern automatic transmission. That's what it sounded during a run at the track. He would shift from first to second gear with the front wheels off of the ground most times during a race. (You can't do that with my Prius.)

If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.

Today is high 80°'s but with lower-than-normal humidity so I going to try to get a longer amount of work - until my Worx 20V batteries are dead which is probably 3 hours. The forecast here is for highs of 90° or 91° Sat thru Tues and Sat is my brother's pool party at 4 pm. So I'll try to get some AM work in on those 4 days.

  36. @Airehead, I agree with this. Allen has no obligation to anyone - myself included. But like everyone else here, bottom line is, I have my opinions on issues as well. And my personal opinion is that if you have volunteered your land to an organization’s use and then take that away based on one person’s behavior, my first question would be (and was) have you addressed the individual? It’s the way I operate. So I asked the question. Allen owed me nothing by way of an answer. But I appreciate the fact that he did answer me. I respect his position, even if I’d act differently. I had more I’d liked to have spoken about, but his response was clear and I will walk away. Peace

  38. Do you remember when you changed the points, plugs, and capacitor on all the cars every year? The capacitor would actually last many years but common practice was to change them when you changed the points. If you work with a bunch of yeahoos like I did you learn to never pick up an old capacitor someone left lying around.

On hamburgers. In scrambled eggs. In grilled cheese sandwiches, almost anything you can think of that could use a bit of flavor without burning going down.
