  7. So today, during what I thought was going to be a boring ride on a beautiful bright early evening ride.. a cedar waxwing lit up on a tree branch. It made my day completely. It faithfully posed for me for a long time. So long that I had to leave.

  8. Time to fix any water leaks in the house. One win and one loss (win anyway). The main bathroom toilet flapper was shot. Was relatively easy other than one of the rubber ears being so close to the tank back that I almost had to cut it off to replace it. The new one just snapped on. The tank by the way was full of dirt from the well failure a couple of years ago when I was pumping mud. All good now. Win. The half bath was different. Old mechanism, with some snap out rubber pivot pins. Easy if it works. However the main unit is also the tank/bowl seal and while working under the valve assembly by feel I snapped off one of the mounting ears that holds the flapper assy. It's a win anyway because rather than get deeper into a repair of an old multi gallon flusher we're simply going to replace it with another of the one's we like in the main bath. Geezer tall, oval, slow close seats. All I had to do at that point was shut off the old valve coming out of the wall to the toilet without breaking it. You guessed it. Success.

  12. As part of the house sale I am looking over the HOA finances, Reserve study & Board minutes I have learnt that having my garbage can out an extra day is a killing offense. There are some Gladys Kravitts here. One woman complained about landscapers taking too much time & being too loud Reserves look like they only started 2 years ago. They are only 50% funded. 9% increase is baked in per year....for a long time HOA provides internet. Looks like they just changed companies. If anything messes up there is going to be 355 complaints Architectual Review Committee resigned en mass. LOL I bet they weren't feeling appreciated I am going to paint the exterior probably next Spring. Will need to figure out how to approve Little Pink Houses

  16. We will move our stuff to a container box, for a short duration. We will be living at the build site, and taking days here and there to flee to a friend's home. My pal said we can move in, but I only want to use that invite a little bit. Love her way too much to wear out the welcome.

  17. IMO part of the problem is that the news is reporting the violence to a point that it's assumed that protests are all violent. They aren't by a long shot. There are peaceful protests going on every day. I believe that a very large protest ran successfully in Washington DC yesterday with out any violence that I've read about so far. There is violence that is connected to but not associated with some of the protests, especially in certain locations that have had violent protests long before BLM. Portland was famous for white protesters breaking store fronts and setting fires years ago during one or more of the economic conferences (G20, G8, something like that). As an aside they are also famous for angry bicyclists. There is violence that comes into the protest areas from outside, witness the latest murder, that has no business being there. Rioters and looters should not be considered to be parts of the protests. They are criminals and should be treated that way. A large number of the protesters should not be considered to be parts of the riots/looting. They are there to protest and often can be found begging the looters to stop. They understand that the rioting/looting takes away from the purpose of the protest. This is where the outside agitators live and breath, creating violence and violent response. It is their intent to spoil the protest. For some of them it's just a chance to grab stuff. Some of the protesters also succumb to just grabbing stuff too. Protests work best when they are held in the daytime......especially if it causes some a bit of inconvenience getting to work. Protests at night are a recipe for disaster as the night allows trouble to hide Just my opinion. I'm white working class who happens to have an extended multi race family, Caucasian, Chinese and African American, some successful, some with prison records. I get a lot of different viewpoints.

  18. If you wait for them”right” time, it will never be right and you will have regret. If you want out of your current house do it. Seems like you have already bought a new house so don’t let current anxiety keep you from a brighter future. And to answer your original question, I would have NEVER moved in wth my in-laws. I would have done a camper, a rental apartment, or a tent in a homeless camp before that.

  19. She big. Couple weeks ago she was 46 lbs at the vet. On the first visit vet said she would be 70 lbs. I think that might be accurate. She is typical puppy. Running around greeting everyone at the dog park. Attention span of about 5 seconds. But everybody is happy 7 smiling when a puppy runs up to say hi

  25. There was pee. I am waiting to do a full review in a variety of shower/bath situations to fully capture the experience and to compare/contrast with known-good standbys. So far, well, let's just say that the initial reviews are excellent. I did expect to smell more like a french whore than I did, too.

  26. The dreaded MIL has been quiet lately. We moved her into an apartment and she’s focused on getting settled in. My wife’s brothers & us are paying a bulk of her rent as she’s a freaking financial train wreck. It was better to do this than have her live with one of us. Ever since I exposed her potential suitors as fake she’s been less engaged in the dating sites.

  30. Yeah I do want to live there. I think the 55 and better Hoa would be way worse. Based on the timeliness I think the board implemented the reserve funding. Since the development is 13 years old it seems like the previous boards kicked the can down the road. And like @Razors Edge I like the way the development looks and the effort to keep things up. I have been used to HOA that did not have any common properties. The only thing worse than an HOA is trying to disband an HOA

  33. That's the part of living with someone else that can be hard for me. I'm trying so hard not to be a bad houseguest that I don't relax. But you know this is for a limited period of time, and you're doing this to help achieve a bigger goal. Keeping that goal in mind can help keep you motivated, especially when you know it's not forever. I think it's really nice that she wants to invite you and I'm sure it will be fine.

  35. I got it wrong. Fighting with two toilets this morning has left my brain in elder mode. Sorry Air. You country folk have my condolences. I had city water, sewer and underground electric lines at my first house. It was glorious and I could tell my neighbor that across the 10 feet or so separating us from them. Damn the well and the septic tank I still like country living.

  36. I know exactly what happens when it stops working correctly: I make one phone call, they come and fix it - in and out in one day - and life goes on. Did exactly that last April. Roots from a shitty Box Elder and Lilacs that I should have cut down long ago, plugged one “run” of the leach field. I noticed wet grass with a whitish residue and a sewer smell. The came and added another “run”, a D-box (there wasn’t one) and rejiggered how the other two take water. $1500 and $350 of that was to pump the tank. Put a leach field of this stuff in 20 years ago and until now, it has been working like a champ...and I live in a swamp, with heavy clay soils and the water table is only about 6’ down. It has never been pumped. Arguably, the problem we just had was my fault for not getting around to taking the damned shrubs down that caused the problem.

  38. Stopped at a bar I used to stop at. My favorite bartender was there, tending an empty bar, and very few table customers. This girl could keep up with a full bar, about 50 stools and a good sized restaurant by herself, best bartender I've ever seen. She probably made 2 or 3 hundred a night, now she's playing on her phone, and has anxious eyes. Not allowed to sit at the bar, so I sat at a table near the bar, have to order food so I got an order of fries, and we shouted at each other. It was good to see Danielle, and the G&T was great, but all in all not a fun experience.

  43. We probably have the best mailman in the world. He works with us about where to leave packages and uses initiative to decide best practice for us. He is about to retire. I hope we get the good guy to replace him. The potential new guy has a different schedule but he is very nice and cooperative.

  45. Clearly the athletes have had a much more effective protest than the looters, or even the much more common peaceful protests that languish in solitary lack of news coverage.. Suddenly there are people waking up and saying "wtf" there's some sort of problem here? Good on em. Something upsets suburbia after all.

  46. This. Perhaps it's the crux of the protests. You are a nice white man living in a nice house with a nice family and driving a nice BMW. It is not unreasonable to say that you have as much in common with the protesters as you do with microbial life on Mars. And yet you, I and everyone are inextricably linked to the problem and the protesters by the nature of our country. It cannot be ignored because it's uncomfortable. We have to be part of the solution. We have to ensure that police forces have the training and the support to do their jobs without simpy shooting their way out of problems. For example, why do police go to domestic disturbances when it's been shown that better results happen when the first responder is someone from social services and the police stay nearby just in case but remain out of the original confrontation. Perhaps it's time to find out why we don't hire highly educated police (other than wage reasons) Is it a good idea to simply assume that ex military personnel will make good police? These are management and voter issues.
