It’ snot that she doesn’t like the way you dry the dishes. She just doesn’t like the noise the leaf blower makes and the smelly exhaust.6 points

If your want is savings, then save. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. My parents have LOTS of money saved and now dad is basically invalid and cannot use it. Might have been fun to have a hot rod or whatever when he was 70 and could enjoy it. Just a thought.5 points

I used to sail with a guy that retired to live on his sailboat and sail around the world. He told me his plan was to die with a quarter in his pocket so that whoever found him could call the undertaker. Sadly, he died soon after retiring when the heater on his boat failed and asphyxiated him. I want to leave my kids with no worries. All my funeral expenses paid and what little money I have left to them. I would love for my ashes to be spread at one or all of the Boy Scout camps near Dallas or on the land that my family settled in the 1840s here in Dallas.3 points

...and "800" numbers? I'm thinking, "what's the point" for 800, 888, 877, 866 prefixes these days anyway? Is it just for the old folks like us that associate an 800 number with a national or bigger business? I remember when my parent would get the phone bill and would scan the long distance charges and yell "WHO CALLED CALIFORNIA?!?!?!?! Do you know how much that cost!?!?!?!"3 points

As my University years were winding up, a good friend of mine and I were looking at doing and planning for the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine, but he had to leave right away and with sickness in my family, the trip was scrapped. I have often thought about it and honestly dont think I have it in me anymore. We have often talked about me celebrating retirement with a 30 or 60 day canoe trip across the Arctic barrens, but with intense mosquito plagues there, my wife has told me she will meet me at the end. She is my fav bow paddler and I really dont want a trip without her. This however..., is certainly doable. I have some research to do. https://api.nationalgeographic.com/distribution/public/amp/travel/destinations/north-america/united-states/paddle-the-longest-inland-water-trail3 points

That's one way to get out of doing the dishes. Now you just need to suck at cutting grass.3 points

@Airehead thank you for asking. Mild concussion, so I’ve been doing nothing as much as possible to give my brain some healing time. It’s tough when there are lesson plans and iep updates to write. But mostly I’ve stayed away from screens and reading. Taking my car to the body shop today.3 points

Normally, 80/20 is good, 85/15 in a pinch. All you Nancy-boys out there who get the leanest beef they can find simply don't deserve a good burger, and I spit on your grave (preemptively)!2 points

How much you need to save depends on how much you already have saved, if your retirement includes a pension, annuity, rental property income, etc. that, with Soc.Sec. more than meets retirement income needs, if your home will be mortgage-free at retirement, if your retirement benefits include employer-subsidized health insurance/Medicare supplemental, if your house is in a reasonable property-tax zone and similar stuff. If you've got enough income to save 20% or more and are doing it, you're certainly in the top few percent of people. The avg. person is spending most or all of their income to just get by, even before the pandemic. Of course, a lot of people don't have the self-discipline to live within their means but, for whatever reason, about 40% of Americans say they can't pay a $400 emergency with cash, savings, or a credit card they would quickly pay off. If the avg. person can save 20% of income for an extended period of time, that's amazing and he/she should retire in comfortable shape. I didn't do big overseas vacations until my late 40's because of wanting to save at least 15% of salary, buying a house, etc. But t hen I started to spend much more for "wants" and my savings dipped to 3% to 5% some years, but by then I had set things in motion to have a retirement income a little bigger than the avg. full-time worker's income as well as no mortgage at retirement (downsizing to a smaller house - the one I grew up in), 75% low-cost-very-large-employer subsidized near-Cadillac BCBS Medicare Supplemental, etc. When my house burned in March, I was disappointed at the loss of mementos, but I had made sure of financial-wellness until the day of my cremation and that reduced a lot of stress.2 points
