  2. Through a weird fluke, I got to have dinner with Bob Feller as a part of a student leadership group while I was in college. Feller was awesome, but he would do just about anything for $5. When Shane Bieber was with the Lake County Captains, he ate dinner at my mom's house because she hosted several minor league baseball players throughout the years. She didn't host Bieber, but I got to meet him several times. He stuck out in my mind because he was so good. I saw him in Akron and no hitter he threw in Columbus. He's a good guy and I am happy when good people do well.

  3. And apparently no one here cares. I'm at the office as usual. My to do list includes working on sales commission reports - one of my lease favorite jobs - and trying to track down our corporate CPA. He seems so have gone dark. On a positive note, Rudy came to work with me today. I'm making an early assumption that he will get more done than me today.

  4. Has begun. I've been riding my fatbike through the summer when my Rocky Mountain was all busted up and shit. But today was the first ride in snow. It snowed all day today and will continue tonight and then again Friday and Sat. We could get a foot of snow in the valley and 2 ft. in the mountains. The trails were pretty good and should improve with more riders. Time to get after it.

  5. I never saw my grandpa as a young man. He was over 40 when my dad was born. He was already in his 70s by my first memories of him. My mom gave me a bunch of family photos on my visit last month and this was among them. This was taken when he served in the Navy in WWI.

  7. Fiber Optics. We have been struggling with our Hooterville/Mr Hainey DSL service since we moved here 20 years ago. And now that Mrs has been working from home, and with everyone one else on the street working from home too, our service is next to worthless. So much so, Mrs has been campaigning to move and or rent office space in town that has decent internet service. The fiber optics they've been promising us over a decade keeps getting delayed, supposedly years into the future. But yesterday, when we came home from the dentist, the underground utility lines were marked with flags/paint and this was in our yard. This was all Mrs wanted for Christmas.

  8. Would have worked if the people had followed the idiots ideas. The current outbreaks are centered around college campus parties (maskless of course) and people gathering indoors instead of maintaining distance. It's just a rebound of "I'm tired of the virus and screw that".

  10. Today is the 50th anniversary of the blowing up of a beached whale in Oregon. Here's the story with video. You can by pass the blah blah blah part of the video and go straight to the exploding whale by skipping to 2:30 mark of the video.

  16. Not married so hard to say, but I know my parents lived in an apartment no bigger than that with 3 kids for most of their adult life and they managed. Even when they eventually moved to a much bigger house, they were pretty much always in the same room or on the porch together.

  20. I got a text from one of my older sisters asking me if I served in the military. Yep... Everyone is posting their military pictures on FB for Veterans Day but I didn’t see anything from you so I wasn’t sure. When I got home my wife showed me the posts from my brother & “Vietnam Era Vet” BIL and a bunch of other friends & distant family hyping themselves... Whatever floats your boat I guess... I guess it never occurred to me to seek affirmation on FB...

  26. Frank Perdue was tough - tough on the farmers he hired and the Chesapeake Bay. Based on the crowded chicken houses, I don't think he had much to do with how tender the chickens were. Of course, it's arguable that he wouldn't have been able to sell his birds profitably if he didn't keep costs down, etc. But he did it at the expense of other industries on the Chesapeake Bay, for which he should have been immensely fined. Frank Perdue was a Maryland Eastern Shore guy. He hired farmers there to raise chickens. The poultry industry became huge on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. He did not pay them enough to properly dispose of the chicken crap, so they bulldozed it into the Bay, causing huge loses in oysters and other salt water creatures. Eventually, the State stepped in and corrected things: the Chesapeake Bay is an extremely major part of the Maryland economy and great environmental care is taken of it - even Pennsylvania has passed laws limiting farm fertilizers and pesticides used along the Susquehanna River, the major tributary to the Chesapeake.

  27. One feature I like is that you can change the speed when they speak and slow it down until you get better. If you watch the Spanish language news casts, you also get context, so that can help.

  35. There is a huge difference between "adequate" batteries and good ones. I assume it's the quality of construction. Even among top of the line batteries for race purposes there are the run of the mill "good" and the hand selected specials that are picked out at the end of the production line by being the top 1% during acceptance tests. Treat what you have or get next very well. Most of these lithium batteries don't like repeated discharges to minimum. Recharge laptops and phones at 50%. This is the opposite of what we had to do back in the days of nickel cadmium batteries that needed to be discharged fully before recharge.

  36. A friend in college had a father born in Germany and who fought in the German Army in WW2. He emigrated to Chicago and, one day, saw a sign above a door that read, "Veterans of Foreign Wars." So he went inside and tried to join! True story according to the friend!
