  3. Had my annual review at work this week. Based on the dark cloud over my boss earlier this week, I was not sure how things would go. The meeting with the partners had no surprises good or bad about my performance. They were understanding that this year has been taxing personally and professionally. When asked about ways we could grow the company, I broached a topic they had just been starting to discuss so they asked me to be involved and take a lead in that direction. I have been hesitant to talk with them about wanting to live to AZ in the next couple years. Didn’t want that to be license to be swept out the door. They brought up if I had given thought to going there since my daughters are there. I told them I had but nothing concrete with the pandemic. They just asked I keep them in the loop so they can act on finding someone to fill my spot when I am ready. I wasn’t expecting much change financially because some of my biggest clients have been struggling with the pandemic. Instead, I got a 10% raise! I was almost speechless on that one!

  4. ...that I turned RO into a tiny kitten somehow while hanging out with a friend. RO was pissed and kept trying to attack and bite at me. My friend was laughing hysterically at this, and I was laughing too, but I had to fend off (it wasn't hard) the tiny kitten attacks. It was really funny because she kept over-jumping, not being used to her new jumping abilities and all. I am worried she may still be a kitten. The end.

  5. It probably took me 2-3 yrs. after I moved a decade ago, to appreciate the prairies. I initially hated the super cold winter weeks (-25 to -35 degrees C) and huge long stretches of cycling with no trees for relief. I'm more of a tree person that loves generous tree cover.. One good thing in our part of CAnada, the humidity year round tends to be drier than ie, Ontario or southern British Columbia. Today when these photos were taken, is only 30% humidity with bright sun and often clear skies, the snow tends to melt a bit faster. But then snowfall returns. We get alot of sunny bright days with clear skies or fantastic cloud formations that's easy to see year round. Downtown Calgary is to my top left. Very faintly to right of city are Rocky mountains nearly 100 km. west. Long time locals like to sell the Rocky Mountains --as if it's ours. It's not...they and the park wilderness do not sit within our municipal boundaries at all. And Banff National Park is enormously huge real wilderness. Just to know let people know that despite overhyped photos of summer crowds near town of Canmore or Banff....outside the edges is vast wilderness with elk, moose, bears, bighorn sheep, long hair mountain goat, etc. Day hikes in the Banff area - Banff National Park (pc.gc.ca) Miracle Moments: Of Bears, National Bird and Other Critters at Banff National Park – Cycle Write Blog (wordpress.com)

  9. I said booze, everyone else said charity so let's compromise. Give your staff a card that says you have made a donation in their name to the Dennis fund. Box up the booze, strap it to the back of a moose and send it west. It'll find me. Trust me on this. The damn beasts licked my car.

  10. From the slowest car and last place in the points to the fastest practice times in sessions 1 and 2 George Russell is getting the chance of a lifetime while driving Hamilton's car as a replacement driver this week. Hamilton is out for at least this race with cv19 and Russell has been borrowed from another team to drive the car. It's not disclosed how much Williams got in return for loaning him to Petronas (another Mercedes engine team). The car needed major changes to fit the much taller driver and Russell also has to squeeze on a size smaller shoe because there is simply no room for his normal one in the car built to fit Hamilton. F1 is a wild place this weekend.

  14. Today, while I ponder why Saturday isn't Saturnday, I'm making the very excellent Martha Stewart's Savory Fall Stew: Italian Sausage, Butternut Squash, Carrots, Fennel, Onion (calls for Pearl, I just slice Sweet), Brussels Sprouts, Diced Tomatoes, Parsnips (couldn't find any so I doubled the carrots), "a bundle of fresh herbs" (I just sprinkle in Dry Italian Seasoning and Garlic Powder), to which I add potatoes and which is covered to about the top of the veggies with Chicken Stock (made with Better Than Bouillon Chicken Base).

  15. The forge had a guy (owl call him Harry, because that is his name) that liked to call everyone “Hey Asshole”. We had a high lift driver who didn’t like to be called that. The one night this guy needed another tub of billets on the loading platform. He called the lift driver: “Hey Asshole, I need a lift over here.” Now anytime you run billets through the furnace and don’t make a part out of them for one reason or another the billets get scaly as they cool off. Harry was a loader and his job was to load billets into the furnace. Loaders hated loading scaly billets because the scale would flake off and cover the electric eye on the furnace. The worst ones to load would be the ones that didn’t have time to cool off and had to be put under water to quickly cool them so they could be loaded. The wet scale was worse than the dry scale because it got the loader’s gloves wet handling them and the wet scale stuck to the electric eye a lot more and kept the loader busy cleaning the eye between billets. When Harry asked for a lift there were lots of tubs of fresh billets that were not scaly and there was one tub of billets that had been run through the furnace and were scaly but had air cooled so they were not wet. The “Asshole” high lift driver took the dry scaly billets and put them under water and then brought them to Harry to load. I asked him why he did that? He said Harry called me an Asshole, I’ll show him who’s an Asshole. Harry never called him Asshole again. End of story.

  19. I’m making a beef stew. Never done one before. Basically like a beef soup, but I’ll start with a butter and flour roux. Might add some red wine, or maybe Red Bull for more flavor. I’ve cooked with red wine before, but never Red Bull.

  21. We did that. My uncles farm was a dairy farm with cows. We played in the hay and in the silo. There were all sorts of rabbit warrens in the barn used to move hay from place to place. The farm I grew up on was a truck farm with various vegetable crops and hay and alfalfa for rotation. They cut and baled hay to sell. I got to drive the truck at about the age of 10. My job was to idle down the rows straight while the crew threw bales up on the flatbed. Someone would run up to the cab and help turn the truck at the end of the field. Thus began my career as a "driver".

  22. The barn that’s in my sunset pictures has a hay loft just like my uncle’s barn where they store loose hay. I can hear the neighbor kids playing in the hay loft. They sometimes hire a neighbor with a baler to bale their hay. Making tunnels with hay bales is another kind of fun.

  32. I am making the same thing tomorrow! I used to make a beef stew without the roux, but once I did, there is no going back. You will love it if you leave out the Red Bull. Today I am trying a new ramen recipe with ground beef. I've never made a soup with ground beef before... I'm a little worried.

  33. I made chili this morning. I have more ground beef so Wo7 will have a burger. I put the chili in the instant pot set to slow cook starting at 2:00. I’ll get home around seven. The chili will be good.

  37. My family told a similar story but this was before inwas born. In the 50’s & early 60’s my city was more rural and the mega mansions and condo’s were once single family homes with large lots. My parents lived in one of these small homes on a large lot and had a several animals & a goat. One day this goat rammed my dad so he gave it to a friend as he didn’t want it to hurt the kids. Fast forward a few months and this friend invites my family & some other friends over for to a bbq. Hey this satay tastes different, what kind of meat did you use... Oh you don’t want to know... My dad looks around his yard, hmm I don’t see the goat.

  38. My uncles and even my grandpa had real jobs as well as the farm so the farming wasn’t as big of a deal. They grew corn and oats and hay and had a few dairy cows, a few beef cows, some chickens and some sheep. My cousins always had time to play when I visited. Sometimes I would help them with chores so they got done sooner.
