  4. Absolutely. I am phase 2 and I am hopeful that I am at the beginning of phase 2. My work is with many young people who are immunocompromised or otherwise medically complex. My vaccine, just like my current behavior during COVID, helps to keep these youngsters not only safe but alive. It is my responsibility to do what I can to help them remain well. I feel I am also responsible to not bring germs to my elderly loved ones, my dad, or my husband. Yep, I am in line.

  7. At the bottom of this message is a picture of what the assholes on TV are still calling the "devastating, frightening" storm, at 1:15 pm after a three hours of snow and it's coming down fairly heavy and wet, from my apartment window midway between Baltimore and Annapolis. The highs today are in the upper 30's and the ground is very warm. In Central Maryland we often get less snow than surrounding Virginia. West Virginia, Western Maryland and Pennsylania because the Chesapeake Bay's waters serve as a giant heat sink for the area. The kids in my county, where I taught school, feel cheated most years because our county borders on the Bay and there are fewer snow days. The few schools in the area that have in-school instruction have posted notices of "Remote school" today. I wonder if school snow days will be a thing of the past thanks to the pandemic? We also tend not to get whacked before Christmas, especially when the daily highs have been mostly in the 50's and 60's throughout December. But if you watch TV, this is the snowstorm of the century! As I previously reported, the TV weather and news people have been using the word "Nor'easter" every other sentence and saying things like "We're going to get the first real whacking of Winter." Meanwhile, Accuweather called for 1-2", then rain. The snow is forecast to mix with or change to rain within 3 hours. As I predicted, the TV noon news today had reporters stationed near Pennsylcania and in Western Maryland and implying they're in the Baltimore area. A nurse who worked with my sister saw her Monday and asked why the food stores are so crowded. My sister told her the jerks on TV are making people think they're going to be snowed in. Local TV should ask for a kickback from the local food stores! Of course, overnight the temps with drop into the 20's and there will be a dusting of snow and some icy spots on the roads, but nothing that safe driving can't overcome.

  13. Definitely a typo. I think no one here wishes anyone here any sickness. It's sort of why we're arguing with you - not because we want you to get sick, but rather to NOT get sick. Nobody wants DeathJim other than as a weather meme.

  15. My nephew Ryan discovered an Asian-run restaurant in Columbia, Maryland called "Urban Hot Pot" which has mostly Asian cuisine (see 2 page menu at bottom with location info & phone) and also a Cajun menu. We did Asian. Ryan took his father, Brian, there for his birthday on Tuesday (between fake snow days) as well as his mother Donna, my sister the retired nurse, and me. I was a fun, unique experience for us. There are two of these restaurants, the other in the D.C. suburb of Rockville, MD, and they're not near your and it succeeds and spreads or there are similar restaurants near you, we highly recommend it for at least 1 time - we are sure to return on occasion, depending on how the pandemic effects things. You cook your food in front of you in a small pot of broth on your seats-six booth's table that heats quickly to a strong boil: there are about a dozen spicy, chicken, miso, etc. broths to choose from and, since it's all you can eat, you can switch to different broths if you want. The bill including drinks and included desserts and 18% tip was only about $117 for all 4 of us for lunch! It's cooked on an induction plate that doesn't get hot so you don't have to worry about burning yourself. If you want to slow down the broth evaporation there are off, low, medium and high control settings, but the waiter/waitress will add water to the broth if it starts to get low: You order the stuff you want to go into the hot pot with a tablet that sends the order directly to the kitchen. It's been shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, but there's also normally a small "train" or flat belt that runs on a loop and carries food past the tables so you can add stuff to your pot - reminiscent of the Lazy Susan in the middle of each table in restaurants in China that are loaded with group dishes filled with various stuff to choose from. The choices of food (see menu at bottom) include different types of beef, pork, and chicken, seafood including shrimp, vegetables ranging from baby bok choi, to broccoli, to unusual enoki mushrooms (bottom middle of the first pic below that look like white sprouts), to potatoes and Chinese yams, as well as things like quail eggs, oriental dumplings, udon and various other noodles. They also have stuff like hot dogs, but we wanted to experience unusual stuff - like the quail eggs, Chinese yams, beef carne, etc. The tablet is passed around, each person selects anything desired (remember, it's all you can eat), and the food is brought out on plates. You also pick sauces including soy, chives, peanut, sriracha, fish, sesame oil, sesame seed, garlic, and lots more. You put root veggies in the broth for a few minutes to soften, the leafy stuff for a minute or so, and the pre-cooked meat is hot in less than a minute. You have various implements: tongs, ladle, spoon, fork or chopsticks to move the food to and from the hot pot and your plate and to eat it. Some people pick from the sauces and mix them together in the provided bowl and others, like me, sprinkle them directly on the plate of food. Holding your spoon in the boiling broth ensures you're avoiding spreading germs: There was a limited choice of dessert - the best in my opinion was "cake of the day" where you got up to 3 of these little cheesecakes per person, which I got despite wanting to try new things. I wasn't brave enough to try "Sweet White Fungus w. Jujube" as the last taste to remain in my mouth! We all had fun. If restaurants are still open at the end of the month, Ryan wants to eat at the Urban Hot Pot again for his 20th birthday! The menu. We saw it and chose from it right on the tablet which varied a little from this online menu:

  27. I was supposed to have a package delivered today at work. I get an email that says they tried to deliver but couldn’t as no one was here to sign for it. There are four others in the office besides me today. My office also faces the driveway so i see everyone that comes and goes, ain’t seen no FedEx truck. I suspect the driver is running late and decided to skip us.

  30. Story in the Washington Post: The US Canadian border remains closed to non-essential travel. However, Canadian RV owners are taking advantage of a loophole. Canadians can fly into and out of Canada, with quarantine restrictions on the return. Cross border towing companies are considered essential so they can tow RVs from Canada to the US. The RV owners meanwhile fly across the border, retrieve their RV and vacation in warmer southern states. One Canuck chartered a 12 minute flight across the border. Business is good for the towing companies, some reporting three to four trips per day.

  34. So, one might opt for a solid wood door, and they break a window to get in? Additionally, I can probably kick a door in and break the deadbolt. I am certain that a strong man could easily kick in a deadbolted door. If someone wants in, they are going to get in. I don't worry too much about theft, other than locking the door when I leave. You can't prevent it.

  37. Not sure how long individual birds live but for the 20 years we’ve owned our property there has always been a pair of pileateds in the sugar bush. Many times I’ve watched them either leave or return to the tree they overnight in. They’ve changed trees a few times but are still in the same area.

  42. At work in the early 80's we had reserved parking spaces. One day a car was parked in one of the spots. A few days later we realized the car hasn't moved. I take my boss out and show him the car. The car was unlocked, my boss gets in and starts looing around. I tell him... when the police come your prints will now be all over the car. Do you cant to give me some bail money now? I noticed the car dealer sticker on the back of the car. I go inside, and call the dealer. Are you missing a new car? They said yes. I called the police. My boss didn't go to jail.
