  2. No. Never married. I had two live-together relationships that didn't pan out and pretty much convinced me I was happier single. As I age, that attitude might change.

  4. or adventures in house hunting. Woke up early and fixed breakfast. Six slices of applewood smoke bacon in the oven. Mixed flour, baking powder, sugar and salt with six tablespoons butter and a cup of milk. Cut 11 biscuits and placed them into a cast iron skillet with a little bacon grease. Brushed the tops with half and half and they went into the oven when the bacon came out. While the biscuits were baking, I made some scrambled eggs and more coffee. Good eats. Worked outside for a bit afterwords. I used a sawzall to cut up a pallet skid that I was thinking of burning in the firepit or tossing in the trash on Tuesday. The rug guys delivered the three wool rugs that we had cleaned and we bribed them to roll up and bag the 10' by 18' rug and pad in the basement. After lunch, Wo7 and So7 and I drove out to the country to an open house. A small Cape Cod that sat on 13 acres with a big barn that we were interested in. The road the led to the driveway was gravel, The long driveway, a pipestem, was shared with a few other houses was gravel also but was in much worse shape. Gravel was an afterthought in places with large bodies of water here and there. Wo7's Mazda will need to be washed after this. One house we passed was basically cinderblocks with a door and some windows. Several decrepit and rusting vehicles littered the property. At the end of the drive was the open house. There were two fenced pastures on either side of the driveway. The red barn was on the left, with someone's car parked in front and a rusty Cat bulldozer next to it. The Cat trades were covered in dried red clay and bits of gravel. On one side of the barn, under an overhang was a blue and gray Massey tractor. The barn was set up with horse stalls on either side but there hadn't been horses in there for several years. There were sliding doors at the rear of the barn but none at the front. Catty-corner from the barn, closer to the house, was an unfinished garage large enough for four cars, two wide and two deep. The building was new but there was no siding on it, only the wrap placed over the plywood walls. So7 looked inside and said that it needed work before siding could go on. He thinks that the plywood got wet and will need to be replaced before adding siding. The house itself was nice from the outside with a wrap around porch and a deck off of the kitchen out back. Inside the door, there was no entry way, just the living room. The living room was small and had a wood stove used for heat though the house had two heat pumps and emergency propane for heat. The 500 gallon propane tank was buried in the back and was used for the stove, tankless hot water heater, emergency heat, and a backup generator. The master bedroom and bath were to the right of the living room with two more rooms and another bath upstairs. In the basement, there was another bathroom that had a rough in for a bathtub but we couldn't look in there because the sign said "do not open, kittens inside". A small living room and a game room next to that led to the utility room. Downstairs was roughly 760 square feet. Whole house was just shy of 2,000 square feet. Things that I noticed was that a lot of finish work in the house was not finished. Trim needed to be added, paint wasn't in good condition and one of the dormer windows needed aluminum flashing repaired. I noped out of there. So7 liked it for the possibilities of his automotive hobbies but admitted that he was a little creeped out by the neighbor's place and admitted that the driveway needed work. But I can use the dozer for that he said. Wo7 kept coming up with plans for this and plans for that. I talked her down from the place she was at. So7 suggested that we go back to the first house that we looked at a couple week earlier. The realtor said she'd meet us there at 4:00. To shorten this story, we signed an offer for the first house last night. So7 and I were sitting around the firepit smoking cigars and drinking Jameson and signed the offer and disclosures using our smartphones. The end.

  6. My massage therapist friend..is also at my church...after talking for almost 1.5 hours I will be calling our pastoral care committee to see about getting a ride to and from work on the 11th...instead of driving myself ....and she strongly suggested I take them up on 2 or 3 meals a week..or at least 2 weeks post surgery...But best news...she will come to my house next Sunday and Wednesday the 10..for shower assistance.... She spent most of the time telling me to spend my time healing and not trying to figure out transportation or food...

  9. I'm sure I've told this story before, but it's a good story, so what the hell... Cresting a long climb, I was just letting the bike coast over the top and down the gradually steepening other side of the hill. Smack dab at the top was a guy out in the yard with his pack of chihuahuas, must have been about 6 or maybe 8 of them. I think a couple full grown and some pups, but it's hard to tell. So I'm going a slow walking pace as I pass the house, picking up speed as the hill steepens. The whole pack of chihuahuas fell in behind me, yapping like demented ducks. The owner standing in his yard calling fruitlessly as we headed down the hill. The little yappers gave it a game try but they gradually strung out like a peloton on a steep climb and eventually gave up and I assume went home.

  10. My son sent me videos of his new house tonight. He closed on the house he sold and closed on the house he bought yesterday. In the video I could see they were already entertaining another family that they are really close with. I was feeling sad because I don’t know when I’ll be able to go see his new house. Probably not until my wife passes. He walked me through the house and all the kids rooms are done, the kitchen, dining room are functional with no boxes anywhere. The only room still stacked with boxes was the master bedroom. I don’t know how he moved a family of eight so quickly. That’s a lot of kids #Taloks

  18. I really appreciate the support I get from the forum. This caregiving thing with my wife is the hardest thing I have ever done. I’m sure in more than one way it was responsible for my heart attack in July. My local flesh and blood friends have not been much help. Covid probably has a lot to do with that. My youngest son has been great help but he is the busiest person I know with a large family that he needs to spend time with.

  19. I enjoy shooting trap. My dad is a competitive national trap shooter. Past his prime but still excellent. He taught me to shoot and I enjoyed being on the family trap team when I was younger. It is still one of the things we still do as a family. I love to beat my oldest brother if I can.

  24. 280 feet today. It never broke freezing while we were doing it. Bitter cold wind. I am wiped, and I did 1/10 of the work today. The cold wiped me out. It's 6 pm and I think I am going to bed. We have about 3/4 of the property fenced now. We still need to remove about 280 feet that has barbed wire and replace it with range fence. My husband did so much work. he removed all the barbed wire along the front, and installed the fencing in it's place. It looks so much better, and is more user friendly.

  37. My Grandfather would take me fishing on the salt water bays along the NJ coast. His boat was an 18' plywood boat with a V-8 inboard engine with dual exhausts just under the waterline at the stern. It would idle making the most beautiful rumble, unlike anything you'd hear from a car. The story was the boat was used to tow the water skiers at Cypress Gardens. Every so often he'd push the throttle forward - not all the way - and we'd be bouncing over the bay at 50mph. Hoping to catch fluke or flounder, we'd still catch all sorts of fish. The oddest ones were sea robins and oyster crackers. Naturally neither of these are edible fish, so my Grandfather would start spluttering about the 'damn bait stealers'. He'd have some extra choice words for the oyster crackers because he'd cut the line not wanting to attempt to get the hook out of their mouths, and that would mean he'd not only lost a perfectly good hook but that he'd have to waste time to tie on a new hook instead of fishing. Being in elementary school at the time, I thought 'damn' and the other choice words were quite scandalous, but I was ok with it because he was my Grandpa and we were two guys out fishing. Fishing with him was cool because we rarely got skunked. He taught me how to fish by making me tie on my own hooks, bait the hooks, take the fish off, and clean my own fish. And almost always he'd let me pilot the boat (but not at 50mph!).
