  3. I didn't think Z was wrong. I understood his concept to be that there are a number of things that cause death in our society that we live with and accept. His example was deaths caused by automobiles. Where I think the discussion derailed was in the comparison of numbers of deaths, and since Covid killed more people than cars there wasn't a comparison. And the point was lost in the ensuing fallout. And I think to Z's point (at least as I understood it) in a year or so Covid will still be killing people, though assuredly and hopefully in much lower numbers. In all likelihood it will fade from the news and relegated to the same status and importance as the flue typically is. For example, the 'death counts' have disappeared from the sidebars on the major news networks already. We gain some insight into people whom we consider 'regulars' on the Forum. I've had the good fortune to meet Z in person. His mind is sharp and insightful, with his thoughts grounded in reason. Which is why if he does choose to leave, I will regret his absence but understand he's rationally thought it through and determined it's best for him not to be involved here.

  4. I second what @Square Wheels said..hard as it is sit there and hold her hand and tell her it's ok to let go..knowing your strong faith remind her that God is waiting to hold her in his arms, and mention deceased family who are waiting for her. Assure her that you will be ok and join her as soon as God is ready for you..Reminder her that with the wonderful job she has done raising your sons..they...and their families will be fine (grandmas worry about those things)..all these things can help Esther on her journey.. Prayers and Hugs to both of you @Longjohn

  13. I have been expecting her to die in her sleep with no real change in condition while she is awake. This is a change I wasn’t expecting. Her big sister just called, Esther opened her eyes when she heard her sister. I asked her if she wanted anything and she didn’t answer, just closed her eyes again.

  14. Maybe consider telling her it's OK to go now. I did once with a good friend, she was unconscious, but I know she could her me. She was not holding on for me, but she was in too much pain. Hospice, comfort measure only. She died the next morning.

  18. BuffCarla and I may be heading for a conflict. In my quest to find healthier fermented foods, I wanted to buy red cabbage. But all of the styles I found were sweet. Yuck and not Diabetes friendly. Last night at Wegmans I struck gold! I opened it up for lunch and served up a couple ounce serving. Sat down and was watching Roseanne reruns as is BuffCarla’s Saturday afternoon custom. She says what stinks? I explained my red cabbage has some garlic in it. She couldn’t deal with the smell. Kinda like Kimchi on steroids. I took a bite and found it tasted much better than it smelt. But she said you can’t eat that in here. So I put the bowl in the kitchen. A couple minutes later she says she can smell it from the kitchen. So I put it in a zip lock bag and right into the trash. Now my whole $4.99 investment of my stimulus funds is at risk. No one said being a husband was gonna be easy.

  23. I had to UTFG... (once again... I learned something new today... so now I can turn off my brain) av·oir·du·pois a system of weights based on a pound of 16 ounces or 7,000 grains, widely used in English-speaking countries. "avoirdupois weights" HUMOROUS weight; heaviness. "she was putting on the avoirdupois like nobody's business"

  24. Why not go there for political discussions and come here for the fun and sometimes informative posts? IMO, political and religious discussions almost always foment distrust and create rifts among the participants, which they then bring back with them to the "fun" section of the forum, making the fun section a lot less fun. I have taken breaks in the past. But like a bad penny, I always turn up again. I hope Zealot will reconsider leaving for good and just opt for a break, instead.

  26. Well said Mr. K. It seems that after all these years, the internet continues to be a challenging medium for communication. If you were sitting in my living you, I'd ask you why you feel a certain way about a topic. Hopefully we'd have a spirited conversation, not always in agreement with one another. When you're connected to me by servers and routers and you're a "fictional" character I've never met, I'll call you a dolt and accuse you of having no idea what you're talking about. I'm usually pretty tough, but there are moments in my day where I break down and am easily hurt. We're all just trying to get through our own struggles each day. This site is intended to provide that release valve. That's what I use it for. True, I may talk about my work woes, or crab about having to mow the lawn, but I am not going to talk about the finer details of the relationships I have with challenging coworkers, or the arguments I have with my HR department. I do that all day, and it's draining, this place is for a little fun. Please remember the person on the other end of your jabs (your ≠ TK) jabs may be one insult away from a nervous breakdown. I know I often am. Please be kind.

  27. Mrs. TK liked this house because of the floor plan, fireplace, first floor bedrooms, fenced yard (for the dog), spare bedrooms for the daughters and grandchildren when they visited, finished basement, back deck shaded by the wisteria, the kitchen layout, and much more. All that sure is great, but I liked it because it had a two car garage, an unfinished corner of the basement for my workbench, and a generator with matching automatic transfer switch.

  29. CT's are selected so that an output of 5 amps registers as a full load on the circuit. If they were undersized by a factor of 10, their output would have been 50 amps instead of 5 at full load. Most likely at start up nothing would have happened, because the low loads wouldn't have yet registered as a short circuit or overload. Once load was connected, the current transformer output would have soared, and this would have been interpreted as either a short circuit or an overload. The circuit breaker would have tripped open either immediately or perhaps after a few moments. And it would have looked like, initially, that the current transformers were doing exactly what they were supposed to do. And, too, with everybody scratching their heads as to why the protective relay was registering an overload when all the other meters showed normal. The trouble shooters would have immediately suspected the relay, and dissected it for wiring or programming problems. Nobody would have suspected the simple ol' current transformers were undersized, and to check them would have been a pain since they are usually buried in the equipment. That was a good catch! Ah, most of the time it is thankless, but it all evens up because there's no comparison to the rock star glory that comes with the job!

  39. My father and our next door neighbor Larry were always trying to invent something. One summer in the 80's, hearing about all the Vietnamese immigrants who had been hired to pick the meat out of crabs by hand in the seafood businesses on Maryland's Eastern Shore, they decided to invent a pneumatic tool that would let air pressure clean the meat out of the many slots within the crab's body. Finally, the day came to try it out a little gun that had been carefully shaped and machined (Larry was a lathe operator at work) to pop the shell open, puncture the crab meat chambers, and blow the meat into a waiting mesh bowl. The first attempt resulted in the shell and its interior shattering into a million pieces. Try as they might to find the right air pressure psi setting on the compressor, they kept blowing up crabs! Soon, the vinyl siding on the side of Larry's house was covered in blown-apart bits of crab shell, meat, "devil," "mustard." and various other gooey stuff from inside the crab. "That's ok," Dad said as the two men pronounced the experiment a success while a bunch of us had fallen to the ground laughing, "It works great on crab legs!"
