  1. Everything went well. Repair was good. Typical post anesthesia nausea but did fine once we got food into him. Once his block wore off there was a lot of pain but got on top of it fairly quickly with pain meds and finally calmed down last night. He slept elevated on the couch. Was still asleep when I left the house at 0430 and haven't heard from them yet.

  2. My brother in law, mid 80's, her husband of 50 some years, is in some kind of rehab center with sugar and kidney problems. Sounds like he is in very bad shape. She bitches about the rehab place, says that their insurance wouldn't pay for any place better. They own a bunch of rental property, he retired about 20 years ago and every time I've talked to him, he has told me that he makes more money retired than he did working. So spend some of it and get in a better place or hire an aid so he can come home. I haven't seen them in about 4 years, so I'm taking a 3 day weekend and driving up to see him, it's about 400 miles. He did a lot for me when I was younger, and I really didn't appreciate it at the time, I'd like to thank him before he passes. So my sister was over joyed when I told her I was coming up. She is always wanting me to come visit. She just called and asked if I was still handy with lawn mowers, hers is acting up, and maybe I could fix it while I'm there. I honestly don't know how to react to that. But I don't plan on fixing mowers.

  5. While cleaning crap out of storage I found this framed picture. I had recently completed the company executive leadership course which essentially took me out of Ops & into management. The guy to my right (left in the image) is Weldon Kennedy who was the Deputy Director of the FBI. That picture was 20 years ago, I was 35 at the time. Damn I actually had hair & it was black!

  6. I have my ups and my downs. A lot of ups, but there are definitely moments. This week has been a little more down. This Sunday is a memorial for WoLW at her school. I wanted it, I asked my mother if she could get the ball rolling. I'm glad she has, but I'm a little disappointed that there hasn't really any contact with me regarding it. She said she likely communicated that she was acting on my behalf, so maybe that's it. I hope it won't be 90F like they say it will, as it's outdoors, and my body doesn't handle temperatures above 85 all that well. I do hope that it gives my MiL some much-needed closure; WoLW was very much someone who looked after her, a job that has now fallen to her sister -and that loss is hard on my MiL. I also know it's not about me -it's meant to be about her, for her. My sister and BiL and their nieces will be "home" from overseas for about two and a half months this week. It's bittersweet for me in some ways. I love my nieces and I'm very glad they'll be here. My sister had expressed the desire to be there for me at the beginning of this, but soon after, some family things and a typhoon (which sent them gathering aid for people of the area they once lived in) put an axe to that. I get it, but I'd have gotten it more if I'd been dropped a note. I'm okay with not being second, fifth, or tenth fiddle in the lives of others; but I'd rather go it alone than be an afterthought. I started this week with a full head of steam, but it feels like it dropped off quickly. I'm thankful for the three furballs of the Horde keeping me company. Yet sometimes, I'm lonely -and yet I don't feel like I'd be a great piece for someone else's puzzle any time soon. But as a movie I recently saw said "With loneliness comes freedom". And while I have an hour of sadness or tears here or there, I'm not sure it's entirely wrong, if I'm brave enough to grasp for that freedom.

  8. He is a hard headed, tough, union carpenter, trump cheerleader. Obnoxious as hell. I don't agree with him on much, but looking back, he did a lot for me, and he didn't have to. He doesn't talk with one his 2 sons, his daughter died at 40, possible suicide, the relationship with the other son is rather strained. I would like him to know that somebody appreciates what he did. He always meant well, just has an abrasive personality. Dieing alone in a cut rate home sounds pretty sad to me. I don't know why I'm going, but I am. But I'm not fixing a damn lawn mower.

  15. About a year and a half ago, we got my mom a Lifeline fall alert system. She is 88 years old, and lives alone on a pretty large property which she enjoys puttering around in. Anyway, this morning, I got a phone call, and the call display showed Lifeline, and my heart went into my throat for a minute. The nice lady introduced herself and then proceeded to tell me that Mom's fall alert had activated. The first call she made was to her, and Mom assured her everything was fine, she had just had a bit of a fall while tending the flower bed behind the house. Thankfully, she had the cordless phone in her pocket, and was able to answer the call right away. As soon as I hung up, I called Mom and she told me all about what happened. She was totally OK, she had a soft landing and was able to right herself right away, so everything is good. Anyway, comforting to know the system works, and if she ever was in real trouble, help would be on the way. If you have older loved ones living alone, I highly recommend looking into this.

  24. Yeah.. I used to ride a LOT more often. I learned not to mention my rides to people at work. They didn't need any more reasons to think I was crazy. Just yesterday my neighbor asked... I saw you the other day on your bike. How far do you ride your bike? I mentioned about 20 miles the other day. I got 'the look', like... who does that. Even talking to someone about our dog walks. The are like... 'OMG you walk 1 1/2 to 5 miles with your dogs? We just let them out in the yard.' Yeah ALL year, even in the winter.

  28. Pictures at bottom. Wednesday, my contractor Rich said, "Let's go ahead with delivering the refrigerator and washer/dryer on Friday as you scheduled it." Today, I got a call from Lowe's delivery truck at 12:23 pm, "We'll be at your house in 23 to 40 minutes." I called the contractor to make sure someone was at the house. Had to leave a message. I began getting ready to drive the 13 minute trip from the hotel to my house when I got a phone call. "Hi, this is Randy. Rich said to call you and find out what you wanted." "Lowe's is delivering my fridge and washer/dryer in about 20 minutes. Is anyone working at the house today?" "I don't think so." "Then give me the code number for the front door lock so I can let them in - I can be there in about 15 minutes." "Uh. Let me find out and I'll call you back." While driving (Bluetooth hands-free phone): "This is Randy. The code number is XXXX." "Where should I have them put them - in the kitchen or in the living room." "The living room - more room for people to work around them if needed." So I arrived at my house just as the driver was getting out of the Lowe's truck. A painting crew was working there! We walked up to the door and he said, "We're going to have to take the (36") front door off the hinges to get it in the house." I asked the painters if they could remove the door or if they had a Phillips screwdriver so I could remove the hinges. They said no. I was going to ask a neighbor for one then the Lowe's driver said, "Oh, we can't do it anyway - there's wet paint on the door! That's ok - you can reschedule the delivery for next week - Monday is a good day." So I called Randy and said, "Find out what day next week we've got workers in my house so I can reschedule the Lowe's delivery. That was an hour ago. Front door with wet paint and painted washer/dryer closet: Cabinets partly installed, much improved back porch:

  41. I got a phone call today. A guy from church that lost his 40 year old wife to Lupus four years ago is trying to organize a meeting with other men from church that are widowers. He set it up for the 16th. I’m going to try to go. It will mean driving home in the dark, that’s hard for me because of my cataracts.
