  2. Darted the mom, then they got a rope around the calf's head and pulled it out. Then they tried to dry it/warm it with a bunch of blankets. After about 30 minutes it was able to stand up, shook like a dog, and started eating branches.

  3. I spent just under 2 grand on just racing Daytona...not including the parts that we broke racing. We don't keep with in a budget because motorcycle and sidecar racing is our life. It's pretty bad when the place that you buy parts from and does some of the machining has your credit card on file. I will just text them with what I need and a few minutes later I get a alert from the credit card company. A few days later I get a text from the shop that my parts are in....sometimes they deliver them.

  5. My apologies. Please forgive me. That post was completely self indulgent and self pitying. I am ashamed. I do not advertise my birthday, here, FB, anywhere really. So it is absolutely no one’s fault but my own if that day gets overlooked. By way of explanation, please accept that by the time I wrote that post, I’d not had enough sleep, my sugar crashed and that all culminated in my mood sinking. I think I crashed about 7:00 last night. You’re good people here. Peace, this day.

  6. 1.2 miles snowshoeing/hiking. Seems like every time I stop for a breather it's next to this old, dilapidated tree. We say hi and hang out for a bit. Then I'm off again. I like how there are clumps of snow on the pine tree branches. Also, it's important to tuck your CamelBak hose in your sweater so it doesn't freeze.

  8. Zealot, friend, I have been thinking about you all day. You beat me to the topic start, but that’s how we do. I’ve often felt you are a step ahead. First, I offered praise (again) for your health and for Mrs. Z. I blessed (again) that you are most fully known by and share your life with a truly beautiful person. I also thought about your connection to ancestry, which is a sign of the Spirit at work, and of your artistic ability, and how you translate observations into poetry, illustrations, movement. As I was watching birds at the feeder and bath, I thought about your care for animals and your depth of understanding about Nature, about creation, and about The Garden we lost, but intuitively know. And I thought about having fun exchanging songs and exchanging meaning. How you know there’s more on my mind that I’m not saying. And we’ve had good conversations. Then I thought about the place you occupy in your children and grandchildren’s lives. You have quite a quiver! I’m sure it’s a new mercy each morning, growing into each others’ lives, watching the kids becoming. There was a little CT scan memory in there. I see the shoulder surgeon tomorrow, and was contrasting my recent experience with the one you described once. I could have also found panic inside that machine, but I used your lived experience to remind myself that it would be over soon. And I imagined myself in a scene from 2001: Space Odyssey… Wouldn’t want Kubrick to think I couldn’t act. And here we are…it’s your birthday! And I’m catching up. But I’d draft you any day. Peace be the next year, Susan

  9. Observation: Cheese apparently touched the hearts of a lot of folks here. Personally, I didn’t understand him. But that’s not all that surprising. I don’t ‘get’ lots of things that the majority of folks do. I am however saddened whenever we lose one of our own. And because he touched so many, it’s even more heartbreaking. 😢 I’ll say my Happy Birthday to your memory here, Cheese. And as I mentioned elsewhere, I’ll lift a glass to your memory tonight as well. I pray your spirit is at Peace. Confession: I’m a little hurt. I am alive and still here. Today is my birthday as well. But not one well wish. I could say that no one knows my birthday because I don’t advertise it. But I did mention it yesterday and several ‘liked’ my post. I know I am a difficult person. I know I don’t endear myself to people the way so many others do. And I know I am not easy to get to know. But this has been the story of my life. People who should know, actually forget my birthday. And most of the time, I have to mention it. Mostly, I just don’t. I do however get birthday greetings/ cards from my insurance company, orgs that I donate to, my dentist. That’s kind of a sad testament, really. I guess I really am crappy with making friends. Oh well. I’m 57 today. Happy Birthday, Zealot. I hope you enjoy your day.

  10. Mine doesn't have a hood like that. I do wipe it down daily on the top part. I wipe the inside regularly. It needs another deep scrub on the inside. Preheat is about 15 or until the oven light turns off. When i hear the bonk, I know I am close.

  15. All of us budget for our hobbies. For some it's bicycles and parts. I have to admit that I've spent little on my bike in the last couple of years. My last big purchase was tires and that will probably be all for this year coming up (knock on wood). It appears however that I've spent about 2 grand on RC drag cars however. Some of that was offset with the sale of RC planes, drones and non drag racing cars and parts. I'm sure that those cars have gotten me through the retired but can't do anything covid years though. What are you doing?

  21. I respectfully decline to accept your apology, as I believe none is warranted. You've done nothing different than many others have in offering the sharing of their feelings to the Forum at large. In your original post you mentioned you thought you were a difficult person, you don't endear yourself to people, and you're not easy to get to know. That you're crappy at making friends. Hmmmm.... As a perspective, I recall in 2013 a gentleman offered to invite total strangers into his house just before embarking on a week-long ride down the C&O. He showed them unparalleled hospitality and courtesy. He gave of his time and arranged travel plans for the convenience of his guests, at some inconvenience to himself and his family. Even though he'd been on the C&O frequently, he patiently indulged them throughout the trip when they investigated new-to-them sights and scenes. And waterfalls. His local knowledge complimented the signs and displays that dotted the C&O. He and his wife arranged a picnic one day for the troupe. He took time as well to detour off the C&O to the Antietam Battlefield, which became an experience of its own and a highlight of the trip. When spokes broke and tires flatted, he fixed them. He missed not one opportunity to make his traveling companions feel at ease or to make the journey more enjoyable. There's more - and more - I could say about the gentleman, but I think you understand, and you know... That gentleman was you. One learns a lot about a person during a week long bike trip. And it's not so much the words but the behavior, not so much the words but the way of treating others, that subtly reveals the person who exists under whatever exterior he chooses to wear. I would suggest you not criticize yourself unduly. For every person who might directly say 'Thank you!' for a kindness you did for them, I have no doubt there are easily a dozen you would never know about who are grateful to you or that you have positively influenced in some way. Not because that's some sort of societal statistical average, but because that is the person I saw when we rode the C&O.

  23. I’ve offered my apologies to the group, and expressed that my issues do not reflect on anyone here. Being chided or reprimanded really serves no further useful purpose. But if that’s what anyone wants to do, ok. I accept that as well. However, RG, you and I do much better when we ignore each other. We can continue along that path. Peace.

  27. MY hobby? LOL. We don't really budget for softball. We buy her new bats when she needs one. We pay for hotels when we need them. We eat when we need to and fill up the tank when it's empty. Tourneys are already paid for out of our team's funds.

  29. Hi Parrot. I am so sorry about your aunt. Death and loss is not something I take lightly. I live in a county of very low vax rates. It's about half of our citizens. Lots of people here that believe in freedom and their rights. Many feel this freedom even pertains to simple polite things like wearing a mask during a pandemic surge. I would say most of the Freedomers will not wear one. Most of them refuse it in stores, etc. Someone walked into my office area yesterday, they had a mask, it was in their hand. We have rules and guidelines that state unless actively eating or drinking you must wear it. Many do not give two shits about others. It is so crazy that it is becoming dangerous if you ask someone to pull it up or wear it. I even had someone who I used to consider a friend who got nasty with me when I asked if they could do a health check before we gathered, as they are unvax. I guess I was not allowed to ask that. This person during their diatribe of nasty told me "Only the people with co-morbitities have life threating issues." Um, yeah about that. In regards to the hospital, it has opened back up into yellow capacity which means strained. I am sure you are familiar with the issue of traveling nurses. Many of the core staff has left and have been replaced with travelers. Those travelers are not the same quality as nurses that are invested. 4-8 weeks and they are gone again. Core nurses are expected to train these travelers, get nothing for that as they train another making almost double what core nurses make. The whole thing is a mess and in many ways it is unsafe to have that many travelers and many who are not properly trained or invested. I feel so alone in trying to help protect public health. I feel very depressed here. Oh, and apparently a fridge repair person might not be able to wear one either. I told the service company to make sure he brings a mask. The customer service lady told me that "some jobs, the mask is unsafe for them and they can't do the repair with a mask on." I told her this is completely ridiculous and that surgeons wear them for hours as they work on repairing hearts, knees, and other body parts. A simple icemaker and gasget repair should be a simple thing and can be done with a mask. She would not confirm that he would wear it. I told her that he is not welcome in my home right now without it. The repair has been cancelled for possibly a later date. I am home today. Repair was cancelled, and my dentist appt was cancelled. The hygienist has covid. I am opting to just stay home today, as I have no energy to battle work life today.

  38. A week exploring the western half of Tennessee, including Nashville, in mid April. BuffCarla’s dad grew up in Memphis, and we’re going to hit Beale Street, Graceland, Shiloh Battlefield and Patsy Clines crash site, before heading to Nashville for 4 nights, where hopefully we can find something to do. BuffCarla’s relatives remember going to their black churches, and a teenage Elvis Presley would sit in the back, mesmerized by the gospel music.

  39. Spending is more based on needs than wants. Availability plays a role too. My hobbies are cycling and cooking, beer making is a sub category of cooking. Cooking expenses can be buried in the household food budget so I get away with more there.

  42. We don't go out to eat too often and definitely not pizza. I make great pizza. There is a local place that makes this brussel sprout thing. Most people like it. I'm like, meh. If I am having pizza, I am not doing it for health reasons. I have made a non-traditional pizza with pears nuts and blue cheese. You can sub feta, if you are not fond of the blue. Carmelized onions pair well with this pear pizza. I am sure I will be raked over the coals for this combo. Do as you must.
