  1. She drove to Casa Grande to get her Arizona driver’s license. When the DMV lady called her over, WoW said we moved from Nebraska and she needed a new license. The DMV lady said she used to live in Nebraska growing up and asked what city we were from. WoW said Grand Island. DMV lady said “Really? Me too” and she looked at the name on WoW’s DL. “Did you used to work at Richman Goldman?” WoW said yes and then looked at her name on the desk. WoW asked “Did I give you rides to school?” “Yes!” This is the woman who arranged the double-date that brought WoW and I together. WoW and Nancy were school mates and worked together. Nancy’s family was weird and decided to move to California very suddenly when WoW was away at college. Nancy asked me to relay the message at the time. They wrote a few letters and then lost touch. WoW learned from Nancy that she hit a wild streak after they moved. When she settled down, she searched online for WoW, but couldn’t remember my last name in hopes we married! They are planning to get together soon and catch up. Thought that was pretty cool!

  2. I hope @ChrisL does not see this. Welcome Bruno! This sweet little 13 week old border collie mix found himself wandering around in a pasture. No one knew from where he came and no wanted wanted him around. Can you even imaging not welcoming this sweet face?! DSDA had a foster family who said "yes to the mess!" Oops, we mean adorable puppy!! In all seriousness, sadly Bruno was abandoned in a field and left to fend for himself. He is safe and happy and will be in search of his forever home soon! Get your application in early at www.DSDA.org/adopt, Just add his name under comments!

  3. I haven't planted a veggie garden for at least 18 years but planted my own seeds for about 12 years in a row before that so I'm confident I know what I'm doing, but this is the first time I'm not using peat pots. I found 6-cell plastic trays where each cell is 2" x 2" x 3+" deep - big enough for tomatoes, etc. They have holes in the bottom to allow excess water drainage and 6 of the 6-cell trays fit on a "1020 tray:" a 10" x 20" plastic tray with no drainage holes. It really maximizes the use of space compared to peat pots, but I wondered if there would be any effect on germination time, with is normally 6-8 days for tomato plants. So I was happy when this little Super Sweet 100 Cherry Tomato sprout popped up today the 19th, after being planted on the 14th. Hopefully, it will have a lot of company soon! I planted two seeds in each cell, one in the center and one toward a corner, to be thinned when both sprout. So I expect the center one to pop up at any time in this seedling's cell. I've grown this tomato before and it produces 1" to 3/4" sweet tomatoes with 50 or more clustered on each branch and they keep producing until frost kills them in October or November.

  4. I think we should lighten up on the moderators. Comments of late seem to have become somewhat more sharp. They make judgment calls, which means there's no set formula because everyone's judgment is a bit different. On rare occasion they may remove a thread preemptively or they may make a mistake. If that occurs I would suggest our understanding and forgiveness should reflect that we realize that all humans err and the bounds within which moderating occurs are not absolute. On the whole they keep this place enjoyable for a group of people who have a wide range of viewpoints. Conflict is essentially non-existent; I would dare say what conflict does exist here is at a far lower level that what you might find in most 'real' families. The pay stinks, there's no glory, little thanks, and of late increasing criticism. Most of us have been here long enough to have a good sense of the tone and temper of the Forum, so we should be familiar with what subjects and comments are likely to merit action in the eyes of a moderator. There should be few surprises and on the whole I think that's the case. I would suggest there are three options for those who find this site over-moderated: understand the moderators are doing the best they can, volunteer to be a moderator, or find a site that meets your expectations for moderating. I have no concerns if people want to express concerns about threads being moderated, but I would make the appeal that such concerns be expressed with a measure of grace and with appreciation for what the moderators try to do.

  15. My now deceased sister worked for the ACLU in the late 70's early 80's. She wrote a piece legislation, convinced a couple Senators to introduce it, lobbied for it with other Senators and House members, saw it passed, was with Carter when he signed it... and she had no law school education. She wrote, introduced, and got passed the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978. It was big news at the time. There are more than a few women that have benefited from that. She received a very nice letter from Carter and was presented one of the signing pens.

  19. I had a boss who was a WWII pilot flying cargo planes in the Pacific theater. After the war ended and everything was coming to an end he said there were tons of aircraft parked all around the airfield he was at and no one cared what you flew. He wanted to fly a P-51 and had some ground crew check him out on the controls and prep the plane. On takeoff he fell behind the torque curve and the yaw caused by the large prop got so bad he ground looped the plane and wrecked it. It was the wild west out there at the time and the rules were that if you wanted to take a plane and fly it home you could. Eventually he took a load of ground crew and a copilot and flew back to Hawaii in a B-24. Crazy bastard.

  31. I don’t know if it’s the society as a whole and I’m not certain how much a lack of Good Samaritan laws had but it is a snapshot of our society nonetheless. For me personally it depends. If I’m alone and see something I would. I assisted in the apprehension of an armed robbery but mainly because the event came to me. I have walked away from an event because I had my small children with me and didn’t want to endanger them. I have rendered medical aid more times than I can recall. As for the Ukrainian analogy, probably not. I did try to re enlist after Sept 11th but was aged out. But that was an attack on us. I have turned down opportunities to join a merc group and I doubt I’d voluntarily fight another countries war. But under different circumstances, hell who knows.

  34. The article seems to be spinning info to reach a preconceived conclusion. The E.U. is providing $1.6 billion in aid to Ukraine and Germany recently announced it "will increase its Ertüchtigungshilfe — a financial support tool to strengthen military and security forces in partner countries — to €2 billion ($2.2 billion), adding that “the funds will largely benefit Ukraine.”" NATO was growing less and less united, but now the fear of Russia is creating a new Cold War between Russia and NATO. The article states "The old Cold War certainties, the meticulously prepared plans to make common cause in confrontation scenarios between the Soviet Union and the West, no longer exist." Then why are Sweden and Finland in such a hurry to join NATO? It goes on, "Germany claims to back NATO action, but has yet to provide meaningful military aid, and is funding Putin’s war effort by continuing to buy his gas and oil." It leaves out that Germany was highly dependent of Russian energy and can't end it overnight without drastic problems for Germany. Yet it has dropped it's Russian natural gas use from 55% to 40% and it's Russian oil use from 35% to 25%. I canceled a pipeline that's virtually completed in the Baltic Sea coming from Russia. Yet the article misleads us by saying it's "continuing" to buy Russian energy. What a cheap shot!

  37. To expect or to strive for a level of conflict here that is less than that in an average Disney movie strikes me as the forum owner's expectation. As a mod, I can take any criticism of my actions - because I know SW has my back. Knowing the other 2 mods a bit, I think they can as well. I also know all 3 react to threads differently, as does SW. I have never given a warning point, which means I have never come close to suspending someone. I typically hide an offending thread and move on. What you don't see when I hide a thread is the offending thread or the PMs that are received behind the scenes. 99% of the time a thread starts to go off the rails or does go off the rails and anyone paying attention understands why. I can lock the thread or hide it. Others tend to lock them - I tend to hide them. In the middle of my Easter I got a message. I looked at a thread, saw it going into territory the our Dear Leader doesn't want entered and I hid the thread and went back to my Easter (I hope you enjoyed yours as well). In the evening, I logged back in and saw all kinds of crap that I probably created from my hiding of a thread (and other mods had to deal with). If we are all adults here as you say, then - Deal With It. Just like others are instructed to do. Moderating this forum is pretty easy to do because of some of the things TK mentioned and because SW ALWAYS has our backs. There aren't many rules here and all our rules are subjective. Thanks in advance for your understanding.

My doc said he would recommend 2 shots before the surgery, the surgery is 100 percent, and pretty simple but the recovery time would put me out of work for 6 to 8 weeks. The first shot he caught me totally by surprise with the hurt and I dropped an f bomb that was prolly heard down the block from his office.
