  3. I am an alcoholic. There is no "no" when drink or drugs were involved. Whenever I started it was a race to the bottom. I fought it for years as a functional alcoholic. Hour long drive homes were with a slurpee cup full of something so I'd be half wastes when I got home and was easier to only look like I drank a 6 pack in front of the wife. I was fooling only myself. This September will be 12 years of sobriety. Had a few close calls but the blue book, a good network, and more reasons not to that to are all that stand between myself and oblivion. Even if you don't consider yourself someone like myself, I'm avaliable to talk if you want it @Further

  7. My foot is Caucasian again. No longer Avatar nor Smurf blue. Swelling is minimal and it is pretty pain free even though I am installing new flooring and painting. Still sore-ish and ladders are out but I can certainly fly an airplane. 6 weeks, Doc? Pfft!! He must be used to unionized workers.

  12. Then Emmy has hitting lessons. Because her hitting coach won't be playing. If it doesn't rain Emmy won't have hitting lessons because her coach will be coaching his HS team. Also if it doesn't rain then Emmy will be WORKING!!!! Her first day at her new job, an umpire at the local little league! I can't wait for her to ring a kid up looking.

  15. In my case it wasn't alcoholic family members. Most never drank or only in moderation. But reflecting on my life and experiences I had growing up I've come to several revelations and reasons why my psyche was molded by a series of traumas. My mother was a very good mother in many aspects but in several other the mental trauma of her youth, abused in many ways by her parents, her trauma affected how she treated me and my siblings. Itself a form of mental abuse that is still plaguing our actions to this day. On top of that when I was a teenager I witnessed a close friend die in an accident and before I could begin to process that two more friends were killed in random acts of violence the following year. Something an already mentally distraught teenager wasn't capable of coping with. There's a lot of nuance and history following the decade that followed but I filled most of my pain with booze and drugs. Surrounded myself with people who facilitated the same activities and the cycle continued until a breaking point, I was snorting coke off the barrel of my shotgun pretty fucking close to pulling the trigger. I couldn't do it. Broke down and came clean to my wife in the morning all the activities she has suspicions of were and I needed help. I've come to grips with most of it, though recently with the cancer and the whole I'm gonna die soon thing has added some weight. But again acknowledging I am an imperfect being and through friends and belief that someone something, somewhere has designs on myself beyond my comprehension, I can continue.

  17. Friday evening, Jr. Wife came to do laundry because she hates the stacked washer dryer in her upstairs bathroom (this is NOT sarcasm, it's true) and was getting ready to make dinner when we pointed out we were going out to dinner with our daughter & BF. So we left her at our house making dinner for herself while we dined at a wonderful Israeli/Middle Eastern restaurant in Philly. And the kids paid! Saturday dinner was another wonderful restaurant, this time on our side of the river. Good friends, good food, good wine. We paid this time, it was our turn Sunday dinner started as a small affair, we ended up with 10 of us for pasta primavera and a couple loaves of hot, fresh baked bread. Wednesday, taking our niece to a highly recommended Mediterranean restaurant a few miles from here. We are really spoiled with the restaurant scene around here, Philly is recognized around the world as one of the great restaurant cities, I think we take it for granted sometimes.

  20. My mom's an alcoholic. My wife's dad was an alcoholic. One of my best friends in HS & college was the son of an alcoholic and himself a depressed alcoholic, and it killed him young. Everywhere you look, you find alcoholics and other addictions I am lucky to have learned to fear that sort of addiction, but also blessed not to inherit the genetics that make it even harder to avoid. I enjoy the variety of beer but strongly moderate it most times, and it is a VERY rare occasion for me to be drunk - weddings and one wild New Year's Eve likely the only memorable times of the past 20 yrs - and I can't say I mind not getting drunk. One beer at dinner, or a few spread over an evening are about my norm. On vacation, half bottle of wine over several hours including dinner was enough to be "fun" but also remind me it's not sustainable. What drives me to ANGER is the NON-STOP glamorization of alcohol consumption in TV and movies. Just awful. It's as bad as the smoking boom where cigarettes were everywhere but the lung cancer wasn't.

  24. Back in 2019 we got the Shark NV356E S2 Navigator Lift-Away Professional Upright Vacuum The reviews were good for hard wood floors and carpet and pet hair removal. Just the other day... I finally noticed a suction adjustment that can be used to reduce the suction for clearing area rugs. Before I noticed this, some rugs would get sucked up and stop the vacuum. I guess reading the manual would have helped.

  35. Since retirement I've tried to fill up the garbage can every week. It's a 100 gallon can. We've also had large item pickups twice in the last few years where the city brings over a garbage truck for things like furniture for $65 a load. Also when we had the master bathroom remodeled and other things done to the house, the contractor had a large dumpster in the driveway. We made sure to fill it up also. So yes I still have too much stuff but working on it.

  39. Last week there were some girl scouts selling cookies at a table near the grocery store. They were just setting up when I went in, but when I came out there was a big crowd around the table, and no mint cookies on display! I'm not overpaying for some tagalongs or trefoils! This week when I was at the grocery store, another group was setting up and I didn't waste any time going over to inquire if they had some thin mints for sale. I got two boxes which will be gifts for my sisters and a nice reminder of our days of selling girl scout cookies when we were young.

  41. They all suck. I used to sell Panasonic which was also Sears but that was back in the day. IMO the newer vacuum cleaners aren't as well made as the older ones were. On the other hand, you can buy a lot of new ones for the price an Electrolux went for back then.

  43. Yeah I have been through it many times now. I go along because it has helped many. I’m just not a blue book thumper. In general, I think the principles are mostly correct. Get honest with yourself, clean house, get out of self, help others and do the right thing.
