  1. After the "severing" on Wednesday, I closeted myself in my office to polish my resume and begin waking up all my possible contacts. Several went big for me. Alteryx, a low-code analytics platform I have contributed to heavily both in my previous role and outside of it, is standing firm with me. I received word from them they not only still want me for the conference next month, where I was to be a "Company" speaker, but they are covering my expenses while there. They also have asked for my CV and already have spoken to someone to at the least become a paid consultant for them for a Professional Services program they offer to their clients. Might even get a real offer out of it too. My network here in Tampa is heavily in the Tech space, with many meetups for young devs, data science, and other groups I am active in. I've already had 3 initial interviews today. Two of which seem like realistic positions I can see myself in. Two other interviews and a lunch meeting with a CTO on Monday too. I was pretty down on Wed/Thurs but to see the amount of support I am receiving and the kind of ridiculous response, I did not expect to have any interviews for weeks, let alone a practical half dozen in 48 hrs. The effort I put in doing meetups, speaking engagements, going to coding sessions, or mentoring the young and beginning coding groups over the years has paid serious dividends.

  2. Well… Ava got her home run off Emmy. It was a good pitch. Congrats to her for getting it. But Emmy got the last laugh. Floyd won 16-4. Emmy pitched 4 innings getting 8 strike outs. She went 3 for 4 at the plate with 2 RBI’s.

  7. I take no meds and have no chronic diseases (other than Terminal Smartassery) and still am pretty wiped when I get home from work. I’d say your better half is on to something. FNG is always telling me how he ripped his water heater out and re-did his plumbing and stuff like that, after work and I think, “Yeah, I remember when I could do that, too”.

  8. No work for me today. I have lost my energy and zeal for work. Will it ever come back? Who knows. Counting down my last 3 years in the corporate world. Not sure what accounts for the loss of energy. BuffCarla will say, that’s what happens when you get into your 60s. Maybe it’s all the medications I take? The chronic diseases or the energy fighting them?

  10. Owing to the arrival of the Hellbeast, I only got out for maybe a dozen rides last year. The last one was mid September. Despite the forecast calling for rain and temps in the low 50’s, I said “to hell with it” and jumped out for a quick ten. ”Quick” relative. That was the hardest I’ve worked for a 14MPH average, in quite a while and uphill overpass sprints still suck, but the last stat is the most important:

  12. Life is full of risks...you can either hide from them or just live life and participate in things you enjoy. In almost 50 years (now I feel old) of motorcycle racing I've had a few trips to the emergency room and I know what it's like to stand on the top block of the podium holding a 1st place trophy. I know that risks of motorcycle and sidecar racing and nobody goes into it with the plan of getting injured. A lady asked me why do I participate in a sport where I can get injured or killed. I asked her if she knew any one who died in a auto accident...she said yes. Then I asked her how did you get to work today?

  15. I had a serious concussion when I was a teen. I was a trick diver. I performed a reverse maneuver and landed on my head on the springboard, effectively knocking me unconscious and dropping into the water. I came to as the lifeguard was attempting to pull me out. I have a permanent disfigurement on the top of my head. But I didn’t quit diving. I loved it. Later in my adulthood I fought in ‘mma’ style competition. (We didn’t call it that back then) I enjoyed it. As a cyclist, I’ve had some pretty spectacular accidents while mountain biking, busted ribs, lots of skin ripped off, etc… But wouldn’t trade it. Living is risky. And it’s 100% fatal. Competition in combat sports is a rush unlike any other. But it’s not for everyone. But for those with warrior spirits, kudos!

  19. Someone in Florida almost died when a piece of the space station crashed through their house. Shit happens. I won't support the concepts of never letting our children ride skate boards or bikes because they might get injured. We simply can't make the world a totally safe place to live unless we go from birth to death carefully wrapped in a padded capsule and fed nothing but organic food grown in a climate and germ controlled lab.

  22. It isn't for everyone for sure but it is the fastest growing sport in fan support. There is something unappealing to see women beat the crap out of each other, much like there is in active combat but to each, their own. Every fighter knows the risks.

  34. Not Wild Sister is visiting so we went to a small museum yesterday. It had a nice art and sculpture section, but it also had a cute small natural history section aimed mostly at kids. They had a large diorama with an outdoor setting with replicas of various birds and other animals by a lakeside. There was a bench opposite the diorama where you could just sit and stare at it. The bench was incredibly relaxing because the lights were auto adjusted to go through daytime, dusk, nighttime and daybreak. As the lights changed the animal sounds adjusted for the animals that were active at that time of the day. I felt very meditative just sitting on the bench watching the lights and listening to the animal sounds. Except for some reason, the glass/plastic cover to the diorama angled outwards, so that it was closer to the diorama on the bottom and then slowly angled out to the viewers on top. Plus it was very clear and hard to see, especially when the lights were dim. In the few minutes we were sitting there two people hit their heads on the glass. I can't imagine this doesn't happen on a regular basis all day long. The people going "ouch" were the only thing to disrupt my meditative moments at the diorama.
