  1. The company provided me with a phone. It was always a few years behind Samsung FE edition Galaxy on shitty AT&T shitty service in Tampa. But hey, it was free. So the phone was of course logged out of it's work profile but they did provide me with options to transfer my number to a new service/line. With the glaring caveat that I had until close of business to transfer the line! So rapid-fire research and I now have the middle "Unlimited" package with Verizon and a shiny new Pixel 8!

  2. of separation after close to 30 years of marriage. Opened bank accounts in my name today. Told Martha we need to start untangling our joint lives and moving on. I think we will end up selling the house. I have been here too long. It is scary and lonely to think of starting over this late in life. Not sure what that will look like. The coming months will be hard, but they will be better than being trapped in a lifeless, loveless marriage. I know that at some point the emotional dam I have built will break and lots of ugly stuff will come spilling out. This makes me feel scared and alone My biggest concern is how do I tell this to my boys and my mother. I don't want the anger and the hurt to turn me into something I am not. I do not want to say hurtful things no matter how badly I hurt. The numbness is beginning to fade and the pain and hurt grow, but I realize this is part of the process I have to go through. And I have come to the realization that I cannot do this alone. I know I need to find someone to talk too, someone who knows about this, because I have no idea what to do next. This makes me feel lost. I was naïve enough to believe those words I said about til death do us part. That is what is hardest. I am a man of my word and this is one promise I will not be able to keep. This makes me feel broken The End

  4. Do you remember those? I saw one on this morning’s commute. It was in very good shape for the age. No visible rust but at 6:00 am there wasn’t enough light for a better look. Pennsylvania tags. I wonder what his story was. Looked similar to this:

  5. I am no longer adding half and half to my coffee. Drinking it black and cutting back on my consumption. I drink one 16 oz cup at home before I shower and I bring 16oz with me to work and drink it once I get to my desk. Most days I only drink about half of the second cup before it grows cold. On weekends, if not camping, I will add creamer and have two or more cups at home. I may take RG's advice and go find a local coffee shop to hang out at.

  6. Morning One on One with my direct supervisor had a surprise guest. HR! Seems my position is slated to move overseas in their cost savings initiatives. As soon as the meeting ended my computer was remote wiped and all credentials revoked. I had about 5 minutes to email myself some contacts and that's it. I'm now no longer slowly looking for a new role, I am for REAL looking for a job. I did get paid out till the end of the month and then my severance will last for 7 more weeks. I knew I wasn't happy with the changes and was looking for a new role, but it sucks when the transition isn't your choosing.

  10. Fry bread is a staple on the reservation and in the surrounding four corners area. Same dough as a sopapilla, but fried in plate-sized rounds. Very sturdy.

  11. There's an old book titled Mythical Man-Month Basically it says that doubling the number of people working on a project doesn't cut the time in half. Often it causes things to take much longer due to training or just the fact that new members of the team might not be any good.

  15. So some quick google foo landed me at the front door of the Mayo Clinic and Dr. Juan Valdez told me that a 16oz cup of coffee has around 185 mg of caffeine and that a healthly adult can safely consume 400 mg of caffeine daily, so while still alot, I am about 30 mg below the limit and should be able to drive and pass a breathalyzer test.

  16. It is still less than 48 or 64, so there is that. Maybe I should convert this to metric? Does .9 litre sound like less than 32 ounces? And I enjoy sipping on coffee. Doing a shot of anything to start my day has very little appeal to me.

  17. Especially good coffee. I need to work on my percolator game for camping. Spend more time watching the sight glass and adjusting the heat to keep it from boiling too soon. Right now I just put the coffee on high heat on the camp stove and when I see perking in the glass I set a 5 minute timer but do not adjust the heat. I keep getting assigned coffee duty on the adult duty roster, maybe because I am the only one that gets up at 5:45 to make coffee and beggars can't be choosers.

  24. So we leave for the Redwoods a week from Saturday. First vacation since 2020. Lodging has been paid for. We already have our gear so the only thing we'll need to pay for -- other than unexpected surprises -- is some food and any entertainment we wish to do. We are staying here: Plan on hiking 7-9 of these: https://www.redwoodhikes.com/TopTenHikes.html

  26. As a teacher, we had a group coffee pot in our science dept. office. There was barely enough time to fill a mug between classes and we all drank it black, no sugar. Today, I prefer a little half-and-half in it.

  31. What bringing him (back) on board did was make it so I wasn’t running three -sometimes four - machines at once. As my new coworker has told people “He (me) needs roller skates “. He worked there for 35 years, but the thing is, it’s the only place he’s ever worked. He learned everything he knows from our former boss - who was tack-sharp but CHEAP - and our other former coworker who knew quite a bit, but was lazy as a pet coon. When I came there and started doing stuff, Hoarder was amazed. He had no idea of any of the stuff that goes on in the real world. BUT…he also half-asses his own stuff. He thinks of himself as a car guy. He has a Checker taxi that he prides himself on. I saw him unlock it one day in the parking lot - he had to slide the window down and reach inside to pull the button up.

  33. Sorry to hear it. My brother's last job, running the loading dock and designing shipping packaging, ended because the shelf/cabinet-making company was sold by the original founders and the new owners moved production to China. He looked for months then two job offers came. I, 15 years older and retired, urged him to take the one that paid a little less because of an excellent State Pension with low-cost subsidized retirement health insurance. So now he manages a State Roads Commission Warehouse.

  34. The sting will fade, turn the page. You have unique & marketable skills that will be desirable to other firms. I was laid off from my current job in 02 (yes I said that correctly). I was thinking, shit I don’t think they thought that move through but oh well, out I go. Come to find my boss whacked me instead of some others who he protected. He ended up leaving anyway, his boss was whacked and the person who took over was like, security is a cluster fuck, why the hell was Chris let go?!?! She then reached out & was able to reinstate my position with me back in it. Oh and damn near everyone my boss protected was laid off in a new management purge.

  35. Short-sighted on them too to do that. If they had just given me the day, I'd happily have handed over the 6k lines of various code that hadn't been committed to the Git repo yet. Now they have active test processes that are going to be executed with nowhere to pull from. Oh well. They shot their own foot. I'll land on my feet. The sting will fade.

  37. I was indoctrinated to black coffee in the Army and so just drink it that way ever since. No sugar or creamer ever. For some reason and not associated to my dietary changes at all, I have cut back on my coffee to just one cup but I also have a cup of jasmine green tea daily. I just haven’t wanted more coffee.

  40. We've stayed in a lot of Motel 6s, but now more often stay in a Quality Inns. We've never gone any place where we spent much time in a motel or bed&breakfast, so don't go expensive. They are just a place to sleep and get cleaned up and maybe eat. I've only stayed in 2 bad ones over the years, neither were name brands, and both were in Nebraska. We have both stayed in Youth Hostels both overseas and in the USA, and don't get carried away with needing fancy hotels or motels. To each their own and different strokes for different folks.
