  1. That runner was going so fast I would almost have to be a pro cyclist to keep up with him (or a skinny male cyclist)!
  2. Hehehe, I know! He hauled ass past me like it was no problem. I saw my speed drop slightly in the data overlay for a few seconds after that, which was probably from the shock and surprise. Then I heard a car behind me, so I had to find a way to carefully move over to the right without being in danger of falling off the side of the mountain. When the car passed me I saw that it was a Subaru with bike roof racks, so I was grateful that it was a cyclist who probably understood
  3. I ended 2013 with my first BikeForums group ride! This was also the first forum ride I've ever done. I've been doing local group rides for a while now with the three cycling clubs I'm a member of. The Morgan Territory/Mt. Diablo loop is a popular route. It has two big climbs. Morgan Territory is the shorter, easier one. It is about 9 miles long, with only a few short steep sections. Mt. Diablo is tougher. It is 11 miles long with very few easier sections. The entire ride was 68.7 miles with 6,690' of climbing. http://www.strava.com/activities/102740916 http://connect.garmin.com/activity/421671852 I got PRs on both big climbs, and I felt pretty good too. This was the first time I didn't stop at the ranger station at the junction of South Gate Road and Summit Road on Mt. Diablo. At the top of both climbs we regrouped, so while we were waiting for the rest of our group I took some pics. Top of Morgan Territory Road. I think we were waiting for one more rider at this point. She ended up turning around somewhere on Morgan Territory Road due to vision problems. Not everyone is in this pic. > >NorCal BikeForums riders at top of Morgan Territory 12-29-13 by freighttraininguphill, on Flickr The part of our group that arrived at the summit of Mt. Diablo before me. From left to right: BikeForums members lhbernhardt, JoelS, and UmneyDurak. Diablo summit 12-29-13 by freighttraininguphill, on Flickr I have many more photos posted on the BikeForums thread here. My pics are on pages 3 and 4. Here's video of the steep Summit Wall climb on Mt. Diablo. This is the final kicker before the summit. I added DashWare data overlay that displays speed, heart rate, percent grade, cadence, distance, and altitude.
  4. I haven't seen that thread yet, but I would love to see your videos! If you get a GoPro, be sure to remove the waterproof door and install the provided non-waterproof door, otherwise the camera will only pick up the loudest noises. Here's a pic of the two doors side-by-side so you can see what I'm talking about. The non-waterproof door is on the right. > >GoPro doors by freighttraininguphill, on Flickr
  5. New (used) Rolf wheels from ebay. The bike also has upgraded components. My riding partner gave me his old 9-speed Ultegra parts to replace the 8-speed Shimano 2300/Sora stuff that came on the bike. He prefers SRAM Red and hates Shimano, so I gladly accepted the old parts! :D
  6. I climbed Mix Canyon again on 11/9. For those who aren't familiar with this brutal climb, here's a website with pictures and plenty of info from another cyclist who's climbed it. This time I had 4 other riders with me. My regular riding partner Matthew and I had our own helmet-mounted GoPro HD Hero cameras, but the other three riders didn't own cameras. They all agreed to wear one, so I loaned my other 3 good cameras to them to mount on their helmets (2 GoPro HD Hero2s and 1 ContourHD). Originally I was going to make a video with climb footage from all five cameras, but it would've ended up way too long so I made individual climb videos for all of us. Since the descent is much faster I was able to make a combined footage descent video from the other 4 riders. I made a video of the entire descent from my camera since I was the fastest descender. Unfortunately I was the slowest climber. http://www.strava.com/activities/94179540 http://connect.garmin.com/activity/402117426 Here's some screenshots from the GoPro HD Hero2 worn by the other female cyclist in the group. She had a standard double and a 12-32 cassette, so she stopped often to avoid pushing too hard. She also did a little walking on the toughest part. Even so, she was still 2 minutes faster than me at the top. While she was waiting for me on her rest stops she got some good shots of the scenery and me climbing. > >Climbing Mix Canyon 11-9-13 by freighttraininguphill, on Flickr > >Climbing Mix Canyon 11-9-13 by freighttraininguphill, on Flickr > >Climbing Mix Canyon 11-9-13 by freighttraininguphill, on Flickr One of the sections that was so steep I had to climb in the drops to avoid popping wheelies. > >Climbing Mix Canyon 11-9-13 by freighttraininguphill, on Flickr Steep! > >Climbing Mix Canyon 11-9-13 by freighttraininguphill, on Flickr The top, finally! > >Climbing Mix Canyon 11-9-13 by freighttraininguphill, on Flickr Group shot at the top > >Top of Mix Canyon 11-9-13 by freighttraininguphill, on Flickr Here's video of my climb (caution heavy breathing!). Here's the entire descent. It shows the two places I always stop to let my rims cool. Here's the video with all the descent highlights from the other 4 riders. You can find the videos of the other 4 riders' climbs on my YouTube channel here: http://www.youtube.com/user/cyclingfun2/videos. They are all grouped together with a date of 11-9-13.
  7. I have been riding with a women's cycling club called the WAV Riders. It's not a huge club like Cycle Folsom or The Hammerin' Wheels, clubs that I'm also a member of. Even though there's only a few of us, it's still a lot of fun to ride with these gals. My weekend rides are always focused on climbing, which I love more than any other part of cycling. I am always trying to improve my climbing, so after several cyclists (including Mr. Beanz) advised me to start controlling my breathing, I finally concentrated on taking their advice. The results were immediate. Stacks of PRs on Strava for every ride, and being able to keep up with riders who used to always beat me up hills. On last weekend's ride I was even ahead of one of the fast women on a few climbs, but on others she was back at the front. She's 40-50 pounds lighter than me, so I have my work cut out for me! I need to lose 20-30 lbs too. http://www.strava.com/activities/90065968 http://connect.garmin.com/activity/392672751 I got a K-Edge Go Big handlebar mount for my GoPro. It is the best mount made. The plastic mounts made by GoPro have been known to break off, sending the camera crashing to the ground. The weekend ride was my second ride with this mount. On the first ride I mounted the camera under the bars, but the shifter cables were in the picture. This time I mounted the camera above the bars. The clicking sound you hear at times is probably due to this.. > >broken latch on GoPro case by freighttraininguphill, on Flickr ..which I discovered when I got home after the ride. I have a new case in use now, and I ordered a replacement for that one a few days ago. I received the replacement yesterday. Here is a climb from the ride. I was following the lead rider. The ride host eventually caught us near the top of the climb.
  8. 21 years ago I was watching Juli Furtado dominate the women's XC MTB racing scene. I used to enjoy watching the XC races on ESPN. Back then the cameras would often pick up the riders' heavy breathing on climbs. When I mentioned this to a friend of mine, he referred to Juli's heavy breathing as "freight training", and since I have always had loud breathing while climbing I used that phrase to refer to my own climbing. I am working on controlling it better, so while it is slower now, it is still loud. My climbing has improved quite a bit as a result though. I get stacks of PRs on every ride, according to Strava.
