Well here's my rationale. Safety is a term that represents relative freedom from harm or an acceptable level of risk. Nothing is perfectly safe, i.e. risk free, not even sleeping.
Based on the last 45 years of driving experience, I'm a better than average driver. I don't drive distracted, impaired, overly fatigued or medicated. I drive a late model, well maintained vehicle. I accept that weather, traffic and construction are a part of normal driving experiences. I don't weave thru traffic or otherwise behave like an asshole.
I drive faster than the posted speeds only on divided/interstate highways when conditions allow and there is time to save. On an 8-9 hour trip, I can typically shave an hour off of transit time that's an hour to sleep, post, rest, etc. It's also one less hour on the road and the implied risk of negatively interacting with the incompetents, old timers, drunks, druggies, sleepies, eaters, talkers, texters, surfers, Texans, assholes, and motherfeckers
The V1 evens the odds with the blue brigade.
