That may or may not be true. I'd suggest that most people work, but not all.
And of course there is a difference between what you want and need. Some people want stuff they can't afford. But... they buy it anyway... and wonder why they are broke and unhappy. I always like the Hallmark movies... some party planner lives in a million dollar home. TV and the movies, etc.. in our society show people the stuff that we should want to have, and people buy into that crap. But I digress... Some people work and can't buy the stuff they need, let alone what they want.
57% of Americans have $1000 or less saved. Are they all sad? Probably not. Are they stressed and/or worried about money? I'd guess many are.
In the 80s and 90s our company downsized and cut staff soooo many times WoBG and I (we both worked there, that's where we met) realized we needed an emergency fund that could if needed, keep our home and feed us for at least 6 moths or more. We became very frugal and lived well below our means. We took care of our needs.
Are we happy? Yes.
Did money make us happy? No. But then again... Money can reduce your problems and stress a lot. We figured that out back in the late 80s.
