You’re not going to build more permanent hospital space in the 8 months time from last peak to this one. And you’re not going to get hospitals to increase permanent bed capacity for x months time, when it will then sit empty after the pandemic is over (“someday this war’s gonna end”). Some hospitals have made bank during the pandemic, others have struggled financially.
I believe tent hospital wards are being used again this wave, and they shouldn’t be hard to reassemble (although it is my impression is that the strain of this wave is in different geographic areas than the previous ones). And think hospitals have done a good job at increasing ICU space, and shared ventilators in ways not intended. But nursing vacancies are up to 12% from a previous level of 8%, and I’m not sure there are tons of people rushing in to replace them. And certainly not the experienced nurses typically filling the ICU and critical care areas. I personally don’t believe an additional 30% of nurses will leave patient care due to a vaccine mandate, at least not nationally, but some local areas may additionally suffer. Regardless, I do believe staffing will continue to be a problem for the foreseeable future.
