The economy is constantly going up and down and there's not much I can do about it except mind my own spending and saving. I try to keep fixed expenses reasonable, so that while I may splurge sometimes, I can cut back if I need to. I also try to keep my retirement investments diversified so there's not too much risk in any one sector or company, and keep enough in "safe" liquid investments that I could ride out a bear market for a reasonable period of time, if necessary. Luckily, even with the current layoffs, the job market is still strong and people i know who have looked for a job can find something even if it may not be their dream job. One good thing about being old is that I've lived through recessions and crashes before and have seen things recover. It doesn't take away all m worry, but it gives me some comfort.

You should have just started saying "I know, right?" "Preach it Sister" "Ooh, I hate that too" at various points in the conversation while casually moving your chair closer and closer to where they were sitting.
