My guess - especially in @Kzoo's case - is that fading eyesight makes some folks think they're doing a good job grooming, when, after a little bit of a close examination in a magnified make-up light/mirror (FTW!) or by a caring spouse/friend reveals that not to be the case. Eyebrows, nose hair, ear hair, and other rogue hairs are best tackled early and often. Most of us are still happy enough to keep fighting the good fight and not ready to "give up" on the simple stuff that make us presentable for public outings.
We can all think we look like a Sam Eliot when it's really an Andy Rooney the world is seeing.

FTR, the Netherlands when coupled with somewhere warm like Florida or Spain might make an attractive 1-2 punch for retirement. Up there for the warmer and sunnier season, and down in a place like FL or Spain for winters.

I eat a few gnats throughout the year. Anything bigger is rare, but when it hits the back of your throat, even a gnat feels bigs (and scratchy/tickly).
I try to spit the gnat out or get it on my tongue and then "lick" my jersey to dislodge it. If all else fails, a swig of water to wash it down.
