  1. ...and I can say it surprised me a bit @Longjohn approved! Very happy he jumped in that direction and not in MY direction.
  2. My current setup is 4 traps mounted permanently to a board. Not so permanent, I've redrilled and moved a few time. So I'm going to just buy an actual rack. If anyone uses these, couple questions: How easy are the traps to rearrange with the rack in the truck? It looks like I can maybe leave extra bolts in each rail so I don't have to slide them all the way out to switch slots. Has anyone seen a hardware kit, so I don't have to make a list of hardware and head to the Depot?
  3. Out riding some gravel backroads on Saturday, and I hits a nice downhill stretch I had never ridden in this direction (North to South). It was a pretty straight section with loose gravel that is relatively well maintained and traveled, but only by locals. As I got going pretty fast, I realized there was a S-curve coming up fast, and I had a good bit of speed (too much speed), so I hit the brakes. Well, too much braking to the rear (still getting used to the power of hydraulic discs!) and the rear came around to my right (somewhere between my 4 and 5 o'clock) but luckily the front wheel stayed straight and I was able to "save" myself as well as scrub the extra speed. Nice burst of adrenaline as I saw in that instant the road gravel rash I was about to experience On the plus side, coming down a later paved but messy descent that hits a grade in 15-20 range, the brakes kicked butt! So much safer and controlled and reactive than my road bike's rim brakes.
  4. ...in a supporting role. Can he do better? Can he be a GC threat - in a one week race? In a Grand Tour? Will we get to find out, or is he too important to a leader like Roglic to also get an opportunity to ride for himself?
  5. ...with the State Bicycle guy on The Gravel Lot podcast. The discussion was around the COVID impacts to bike manufacturers. The host had spoken with him just as COVID was breaking out in the spring of 2020, and then again late last month. They discussed the issues he saw then vs now, and then had more discussions on the overall impact and likely future impacts. What the State guy said, in a nutshell, is that there is likely going to be a large SURPLUS of bikes towards the end of next year especially from the big manufacturers. It seems most of the big guns - Trek, Spec, Giant, etc. - will have likely used their power to to secure very large orders from the likes of Shimano, SRAM, tire makers, and other key component manufacturers. That's to secure their ability to fill orders and avoid the nonsense from this past year they faced, BUT, that also means they are also confident that the same level of demand will exist into late 2022, and that is likely a huge miscalculation. Faced with ordering "lean" (based on reality) or ordering "big" (to protect against getting caught out again), most big companies will go with the latter and that likely means big discounts for folks willing to wait for that next bike and to hold off on the FOMO. As an aside, State is an interesting little company.

    I signed up

for the great cycle Challenge to fight children’s cancer. Because of my health I only challenged myself to ride 200 miles during the month of September. Some nice lady just called me from The Great Cycle Challenge to thank me for signing up and wanted to know if there was a particular reason I signed up. I told her I hate cancer and especially in children. I told her about my wife and my leukemia and my love of bikes. I probably should have waited because St. Jude’s Children’s hospital is also doing a cycling challenge in September. I have heard good things about St Jude’s, I know nothing about the people I signed up with. I guess I should do some research. At any rate I’m committed to riding 200 miles next month.
  7. On Tuesday, the retailer announced plans to expand its inventory to include electronic transportation. “The selection includes e-bikes, scooters, mopeds, and accessories from some of the best names in the industry, including Unagi, Bird, Segway-Ninebot, SUPER73 and SWFT,” Best Buy says. The company cites customer demand for the move. “There’s been incredible innovation in the e-transportation space, and we know more customers are looking for ways to efficiently and sustainably commute,” said Best Buy SVP Frank Bedo in the announcement.
  8. As I ride along the coast, sand is the one thing that messes with my drivetrain. I'm not really sure what the best approach to the grit that seems to come back quick. I notice it in particular on the chain-to-chainring area where you can hear the grit getting crushed and messing with the drivetrain. I'm wondering what can be done to keep it from becoming more and more destructive over time. I don't think washing the bike down after each ride makes sense, and lubing it more often doesn't seem to help, so what do folks think will help the most? Maybe a certain type of lube? A different post-ride routine? Anything? What do you do, @ChrisL? Sand is the devil!
  9. "Available for pre-order"! Damn, that's a pricey cassette
  10. In the second half of the century, we have two "classic" climbs - Taylorstown & Stumptown - so I put on time-lapse mode (my new discovery) and grabbed the climbs plus a bit of the lead up and the little bit of the after. Many of the folks were rotating in and out of my area depending on terrain, but I did get some dude on a TT bike who zipped by everyone and I never saw him again. A TT on the 10%+ stuff is pretty awesome, and certainly on the downhill stretches, he would be like a rocket.
  11. Thinking maybe an Aethos this time around BUT they haven't slapped the new Dura Ace Di2 12-speed on any bike yet We'll see where they slap it first - gotta be on a Tarmac or Aethos.
  12. I sure don't. I was on a ride, heading home and about 2 miles from home I run over a piece of something so I stop and look. The rear tire has a piece of metal, a kin to a staple sticking oot of the tire about a 1/2 inch But no leak. I can't pull it oot, so I begin to ride with it in the tire. About 100 feet later it falls oot on its own. I stop and look, see no metal, and see no hole. Also still no leak I can't see a leak w/ soap water, but will compare pressure reading from now til morning. I can't see a leak w/ soap water either. Anywho, Gatorskins rocks.
  13. ...of the fading of summer is that I took a midday ride (1pm start) and did NOT have to apply sunscreen!!! Still August, but UV index was a 3!

This bar bag from Ellum Bag Works I've been recently looking for one of these bar/stem bags and there are many oot there. But while searching the internets I stumbled upon this company in Texas. Seems to be a small local place that makes them to order, nice to support this type of business. https://ellumbagworks.com/ I think I'm going to really like it. And I got stickers with it
  15. Last evening, despite the dire warnings of looming thunderstorms from the moranic weather app, I decided to go for my normal after work ride to get some exercise. As I was geting ready (@ 5pm), though, my wife comes wandering by and says how hungry she is and that she is going to start dinner. I'm like, "Sure. Feel free to eat early." (beggars can't be choosers) She starts going on about how I better watch out because she might eat my portion too. It was a shrimp po' boy, and we both enjoy that a lot. Anyway, I figured she was joking, so I went out on my ride. The weather was warm & humid but pleasant enough, and the weather liars had likely scared most exercisers away, so it was pretty quiet out. BUT...about 15 minutes in, ALL I could think about was FOOD and the PO' BOY! She was in my head I made it another 15-20mins before I called it a ride and turned around to head home. So, my usual 30 turned into a distracted 20, but even so, I got home and my food was SAFE!!!! And delicious.
  16. You can cut to 4:00 and then restart if you want Absolutely NOT @Dirtyhip approved.
  17. There's a long mostly flat section of the Reston Century that goes about 15 miles between rest stops. This rider was ahead of me, and as I slowly reeled them in, they started also putting a bit more effort into their riding. What struck me as I approached was the very challenging foot position and also the constant full body movement - either because of the pedals or some habit??? Anyway, caught and passed, but having forgotten until I looked back over the footage, I notice the rider continues with the full body effort even as I slowly pull away. Very interesting to watch again (to me) but also impressive to think that rider with that technique was riding either the metric or the full century. That type of riding would kill me in a matter of miles, but I think being young might also mean that sort of riding isn't as brutal?
  18. Not sure what button I pushed, but this happy "accident" was the result - 15 miles in under 10 minutes! Usually that's closer to 50 minutes.
  19. ...in my mind, at least. He is such a snowflake - especially around his soft spots - milk, black socks, and, well, pretty much EVERYTHING. Anyway, it was shocking to me, when headed out for a ride on Saturday, that I realized @Randomguy was in my head(!) and he would not approve of my kit choice.
  20. My Roubaix has been idle for a few years. When I got the Tarmac, the Roubaix became the backup "road" bike. My MTB was my regular all-weather and commuting bike, and then I got the Diverge and that became the middle ground bike. The Roubaix then became the back-up to the back-up, and essentially miles went to zero. While out in CO, I got to ride with my buddy, but his bike was truly old school and not suited for the mountains in his neck of the woods. The upgrade path for him was a non-starter as it was expensive and parts were in short supply. So, I offered him my Roubaix. I think - short term - it is a learning experience for him. "What does a modern 11sp Di2 CF bike ride like?" and "What would I like in a new bike?" sorts of questions. I think he will want a "modern" bike but with disc brakes, and the Roubaix will at least get him a taste of having many gears, seamless shifting, and, in the Roubaix, a relatively plush but confident ride. It's nice to see the Roubaix out in the wild again
  21. Are they starting to sweat a bit thinking about Saturday? Is this the sort of pressure folks here - especially the Flahutes among us - deal with daily? How are you looking?
  22. The fuckers were at it AGAIN!!!! Around 4pm, wife asks me if I am going for a ride. Sun is out and not too many clouds. I check my handy dandy weather app, and it has rain starting at 9PM. Plenty of time for an after-work ride. Roll out at 5:20 (t-minus 3hrs 40min from rain arrival), and slowly but surely start to notice sprinkles, and eventually, nearing my turn around point, I'm in a small rain shower. As I returned home, the rain and then drizzle continued, and there was pooling water at various places along the way. Home by 7:15 (almost 2 hours BEFORE the forecast), and it was still raining. Anyway, I'm waterproof, so I was fine, but having to wipe down the bike and relube is always an extra annoyance. It probably does explain the vague Flash Flood warning on my Garmin, though.
