petitepedal ★ Posted July 25, 2014 Share #1 Posted July 25, 2014 I just have pots on my deck...but nothing seems real great...I will harvest a total of 4 peppers from one plant...and maybe 2 from the second both had more flowers....even my grape tomatoes..seems like everything grew so much and then...a switch was hit and growth stopped...Basil is the poorest harvest I have ever had. Even my hanging plant looks bad....
Square Wheels Posted July 25, 2014 Share #2 Posted July 25, 2014 We just planted for the first time in our greenhouse. The soil is terrible. We have used a couple of different organic fertilizers and it has really helped. Have you fertilized? That's not the same as pouring your leftover beer in it. Square Wheels Posted July 25, 2014 Share #4 Posted July 25, 2014 you need you some goose poo, wheels Holy crap, I can scoop up boatloads of that on the walk to my car. The Fenway area is infested with geese. We're sticking with traditional organic fertilizer for now and will freshen the soil up before we plant next year. Parsnip Totin Jack ★ Posted July 25, 2014 Share #5 Posted July 25, 2014 I planted three tomato plants, two plum and one Big Boy. Some critter is eating my plum tomatoes, not happy about that. The Big Boy has a dozen 'maters but they're still green. I found three volunteer tomato plants from last year. I didn't know that they popped up like that. The basil is fabulous (4 plants) as is the oregano (1).
KrAzY Posted July 25, 2014 Share #6 Posted July 25, 2014 we have tomatoes but they are not ripe yet, the beens are doing soso right now, the corn is growing great and the bell peppers look awesome. We already picked all the kohlrabi and ate it
Chopped Liver Posted July 25, 2014 Share #7 Posted July 25, 2014 I don't have a garden right now...and I hate it. Next spring I will have a garden....both flower and vegetable. One of the first things I'm doing to the backyard of the new place is clearing out the trees that are there, planing a single tree of a different type, and installing the perennials in the flower bed area. Gump Posted July 25, 2014 Share #9 Posted July 25, 2014 So far we have had rutabaga, beans, turnip and boat loads of yellow squash and zucchini.
TrentonMakes Posted July 25, 2014 Share #10 Posted July 25, 2014 I don't have a garden right now...and I hate it. Same here. Our kids run all over the yard, and with all our trees we don't have a sunny spot for a garden that won't be in the way. But I don't even have pots or planters on the deck. We do belong to a local farm-share, but this year we split a share with a friend and we're getting nowhere near enough.

Square Wheels Posted July 28, 2014 Share #14 Posted July 28, 2014 It's a lot more green now that we are fertilizing (organically of course).

I tried spamming them already, so I don't think they like me. I was "borrowing" their member list to try and recruit people for this site and didn't realize the cycling site shared the same users as their other sites. It seems only cyclists have a sense of humor.

Square Wheels Posted July 28, 2014 Share #18 Posted July 28, 2014 Gardening is serious business, don't you know. No crap. It took me almost 7 years to finally get those plants in the ground. I still have a little more glass work to do, but it's essentially a useable greenhouse now.

Leaves tend to leach nitrogen out of the soil so you may need to help the soil with a little compost.
Square Wheels Posted July 28, 2014 Share #21 Posted July 28, 2014 We are really excited. We have some furniture in there too, but during the summer months it's way to hot to sit in there most of the time.

Square Wheels Posted July 29, 2014 Share #23 Posted July 29, 2014 So those are going to be $700 tomatoes? Way more. The floor alone probably cost us 5k.
Thaddeus Kosciuszko Posted July 29, 2014 Share #24 Posted July 29, 2014 Way more. The floor alone probably cost us 5k. Floor? Now I understand why it took 7 years to get the plants in the ground. I would have pulled up some of the floor in year 1, but then again I'm a horrible gardener so what do I know?
