jsharr ★ Posted June 11, 2020 Share #5 Posted June 11, 2020 I just wash them first and then boil them till they are bright green and crisp. Soggy overcooked veggies are almost as bad as nasty runny egg yolks you see.

Dirtyhip Posted June 11, 2020 Share #8 Posted June 11, 2020 Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Fresh peas can be enjoyed raw. Frozen peas can be steamed. Green beans can be steamed and then pan fried in lemon garlic oil or butter. Canned peas and green beans are best used as compost

Allen ★ Posted June 11, 2020 Share #13 Posted June 11, 2020 Turnips are best cooked all day, preferably in a pressure cooker. They should stink the house out too. Good pot liquor is the key to good turnips by the way.
12string Posted June 11, 2020 Share #14 Posted June 11, 2020 Just started picking peas yesterday. Fresh, shelled and raw, bestest way to eat them. Green beans, they go right in an iron skillet with olive oil or butter and herbs. Maybe not this year, my beans just don't want to grow. Only have a couple plants.

MickinMD ★ Posted June 11, 2020 Share #20 Posted June 11, 2020 Not a lot of boiling in my experience with green bean. Sometimes I've bought road stand green beans, cut the stems off, and used them in a one-pot green beans, potatoes, and ham dish. The green beans didn't need to be boiled very long. Peas I'm personally ignorant about fresh, but I've cooked them in a fresh-frozen bag. They don't take long. When I make Knorr Fried Rice, nuked for 15 minutes in water, I usually through in a big handful of frozen peas and carrots or mixed veggies and they're cooked just right. Parsnip Totin Jack ★ Posted June 11, 2020 Share #22 Posted June 11, 2020 The mother in law from hell used to boil green beans for 90 minutes to make sure the vitamins and nutrients was all gone. Airehead Posted June 12, 2020 Share #26 Posted June 12, 2020 There is a time and place for southern style green beans. Peas should never be overcooked unless you are English where they serve a dish called mushy peas.
shootingstar Posted June 12, 2020 Share #27 Posted June 12, 2020 Sauteed the peas lightly and they will be lovely....butter or abit of oil. Use abit of water if you don't like the fat.
Longjohn ★ Posted June 12, 2020 Share #28 Posted June 12, 2020 So Random guy accidentally spills his peas and beans that he was planning on having for dinner and they fell in the toilet. RG is on a tight budget so he didn’t want to throw them away. He figured they would be fine if he just boiled the crap out of them. Now I get it.

My mother’s “canned” green beans are awesome! Totally different from fresh ones, soft but not mushy, actually sort of all dente. Both are good, but her canned ones are much more interesting. Of course I grew up with them so I might be biased. My grandmother made them the same way.
