We may yet meet and develop mutually beneficial relationships with other creatures from distant places. What's to say we haven't already? We make our own realities. Too much of the history of our world has been the story of conflict, conquest and domination. The thought of a mutually beneficial relationship with another species is hard to comprehend. The aliens we have imagined show us our deepest fears. Perhaps if we could learn to show a more noble and more civilized way of interacting with each other, we will be ready to meet a better and less warlike race of aliens.
