Zealot Posted July 30, 2014 Share #1 Posted July 30, 2014 Only six cyclists have won all three of the Grand Tours during their career: Jacques Anquetil (FRA): 5 Tours (1957, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964), 2 Giro (1960, 1964), 1 Vuelta (1963). Alberto Contador (ESP): 2 Tours (2007, 2009), 1 Giro (2008), 2 Vueltas (2008, 2012) Felice Gimondi (ITA): 1 Tour (1965), 3 Giro (1967, 1969, 1976), 1 Vuelta (1968) Bernard Hinault (FRA): 5 Tours (1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1985), 3 Giro (1980, 1982, 1985), 2 Vueltas (1978, 1983) Eddy Merckx (BEL): 5 Tours (1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1974), 5 Giro (1968, 1970, 1972, 1973, 1974), 1 Vuelta (1973) Vincenzo Nibali (ITA): 1 Tour (2014), 1 Giro (2013), 1 Vuelta (2010). Road Runner Posted July 30, 2014 Share #2 Posted July 30, 2014 I'm not sure that with just one each, that he belongs in the same breath with Anquetil, Hinault, and Merckx.

Road Runner Posted July 30, 2014 Share #5 Posted July 30, 2014 How long until Nibali is exposed as a doper? I don't know about Nibali, but I wouldn't trust Vinokourov and Astana any further than I could throw a hundred lb bag of blood.

Nate Posted July 30, 2014 Share #11 Posted July 30, 2014 whether he doped or not, if the wins hold up then sure, he belongs on the list. Anquetil freely admitted taking drugs while he was riding. There weren't ever rules against it back then What hard about this feat is that the 3 tours are so different, that it takes a special rider to do it Like the short list of winners of the Tour de France, Paris Roubaix and the World Championship and if you look at the list of people who have done it, you'll notice that each of them had one of the GTs that they only managed to win once in their careers, except for the Badger, who won the Giro and Vuelta twice each

Fausto Coppi Felice Giamondi Bernard Hinault are three off the top of my head. I think there may be one more, but off the top of my head those 4 guys are the ones I know have done it

Yeah, but you have to start somewhere. And only 6 people in that group. Pretty prestigious to me.
