BuffJim Posted August 1, 2020 Share #1 Posted August 1, 2020 Internet speculation that the biggest dam in the world, the 3 Gorges Dam is in danger of collapse. The amounts of rain upstream are staggering. Apparently large amounts still to come. If it fails , it could be one of the biggest disasters in history. Longjohn ★ Posted August 1, 2020 Share #4 Posted August 1, 2020 They need to bring is some beavers to make sure the dam doesn’t collapse .
Ralphie ★ Posted August 1, 2020 Share #5 Posted August 1, 2020 Dam, an article aboot it in Scientific American was dam depressing. It is snot nice to fool Mother Nature. And they learned from us. Dam. And how can a cheesy 70s margarine commercial be so dam prophetic?

JerrySTL ★ Posted August 1, 2020 Share #7 Posted August 1, 2020 I'm currently reading Operation Chastise by Max Hastings. It's about the WWII Dambusters raid on Germany. Lots of people died during that bombing of dams. 1
BuffJim Posted August 19, 2020 Author Share #8 Posted August 19, 2020 Ok. It’s do or die time for the dam. Next week is critical. They’re letting out as much water as possible, but areas upstream have received staggering amounts of rain in the last two weeks. (30-50”). Videos are unreal, I watch them on Twitter #ThreeGorgesDam. Longjohn ★ Posted August 19, 2020 Share #10 Posted August 19, 2020 Last night I watched a video about the Johnstown flood in the late 1800s. I didn’t quite realize the extent of the flood and the number of deaths. They showed the Franklin Street Methodist church, the only church that remained standing downtown. I’ve been in that church and seen the line painted on the wall showing the water level. It was like twenty feet up the wall. My father in law used to pastor that church. It seems that dams are a good idea until they are not.

Got pretty lost trying to find it (it’s at the old dam site, not the City). Also went to the cemetery, kind of eerie seeing all the tombstones with the same date. Kzoo Posted August 20, 2020 Share #13 Posted August 20, 2020 I played in the state HS basketball playoffs twice in the Johnstown War Memorial Stadium. One of those years we got to tour the church. I vividly remember the flood line.

My uncles house filled with 8 feet of mud in Elmira NY.
Ralphie ★ Posted August 20, 2020 Share #15 Posted August 20, 2020 I read a book about the Johnstown flood. Very interesting but if course sad.
Longjohn ★ Posted August 20, 2020 Share #16 Posted August 20, 2020 A lot of houses washed down the river with people still in them. The houses got stuck when they came to a bridge and then the coal stoves got dumped over and caught the houses on fire. Many people died in the fires.
