Johnny Come Lately Name Posted August 24, 2020 Author Share #4 Posted August 24, 2020 “A disorderly house for the resort of drunkards”. That’s a new one! I get that the dude with the DTs was having his “come to Jesus” moment, but why did he feel the roof of the village hall was the place to make his plea?

And some spanned multiple locales. There was a woman named Sophia Daney. She was one of the “Swamp Angels” - a euphemism for the poor people living in the mucklands. She was married at 13. She got in a fight with her sister, who had her arrested. She thought she was going to get sent to juvenile hall, so she tried to kill herself with morphine. Then her husband caught her with another guy and beat them both up. Eventually she ended up working as a waitress in Rome. One night she was in a flophouse owned by her aunt in Rome. (The newspaper description of the place was pretty lurid). She ended up getting stabbed to death by a guy who had apparently raped her at least once before. (The papers were somewhat vague about such things). Dead at 19. The crazy part is, her aunt was involved in another stabbing death at her previous home in Eaton (?) when two suitors got in a drunken fight over her. Tragedy, poverty and substance abuse aren’t restricted to one locale.
