Randomguy Posted September 23, 2020 Share #1 Posted September 23, 2020 Watching a naval movie where a few folks were killed in a battle and buried at sea. Despite the wordplay in the thread title, this made me wonder how many people were lost or buried at sea. Any guesses? How can we math this up? There was some mention of that in the religious service for the dead dudes, how they would rise up or somesuch. I wonder if I heard that right? Randomguy Posted September 23, 2020 Author Share #4 Posted September 23, 2020 Ok, so the movie told me that 72,200 souls were lost in the battle of the Atlantic in WW2. I wonder how many in WWI and all the slave ships and the pirates and such.
Zephyr Posted September 23, 2020 Share #5 Posted September 23, 2020 By 'Sea' do you mean salt water or just water in general? Because worldwide, there is something like 300,000 people a year drown. A year. Every year. So the answer to your question is "A lot"

Lake Superior is an arrogant body of water.
MickinMD ★ Posted September 23, 2020 Share #12 Posted September 23, 2020 There have been many ships where the entire crews were lost at sea, many still buried in their ships. When the Bismarck sunk the British battleship Hood in WW2, there was a crew of 1,418 on the Hood. Three survived. From the Greeks whipping the huge Persian fleet in the Battle of Salamis Bay in 480 BC, to the Battle of Jutland in WW1, to the Battle of Midway in WW2, etc. there must be hundreds of thousands if not millions buried or lost at sea.
