Airehead Posted September 27, 2020 Share #11 Posted September 27, 2020 And every educator has heard this. I am a fan for sure but never attributed those songs to him. "I cannot go to school today," Said little Peggy Ann McKay. "I have the measles and the mumps, A gash, a rash and purple bumps. My mouth is wet, my throat is dry, I'm going blind in my right eye. My tonsils are as big as rocks, I've counted sixteen chicken pox And there's one more—that's seventeen, And don't you think my face looks green? My leg is cut—my eyes are blue— It might be instamatic flu. I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke, I'm sure that my left leg is broke— My hip hurts when I move my chin, My belly button's caving in, My back is wrenched, my ankle's sprained, My 'pendix pains each time it rains. My nose is cold, my toes are numb. I have a sliver in my thumb. My neck is stiff, my voice is weak, I hardly whisper when I speak. My tongue is filling up my mouth, I think my hair is falling out. My elbow's bent, my spine ain't straight, My temperature is one-o-eight. My brain is shrunk, I cannot hear, There is a hole inside my ear. I have a hangnail, and my heart is—what? What's that? What's that you say? You say today is. . .Saturday? G'bye, I'm going out to play!" 1
maddmaxx ★ Posted September 27, 2020 Share #12 Posted September 27, 2020 I know of him and I recognize him in the cartoons, but I was never a regular follower, just someone who ran into his stuff every now and then.
Kirby Posted September 27, 2020 Share #13 Posted September 27, 2020 My Mom was a grade school reading teacher, so we were familiar with his kid's literature. The public television station recently re-aired a Highwayman Concert and my sisters and i were texting each other while it was on. During that, we learned he had written A Boy Named Sue, but I didn't realize he had written so many other songs as well. Interesting.

jsharr ★ Posted September 28, 2020 Share #16 Posted September 28, 2020 Wow, talk about multi talented. I would never have associated Shel Silverstein with Buck Owens, Emmy Lou, Johnny Cash or country music. Thanks for sharing. Any day you learn something is a good day. 2

Parr8hed Posted September 28, 2020 Share #19 Posted September 28, 2020 I thought a Boy named Sue was Cash's song. Very cool. Didn't know that he wrote music as well as poetry. Where the sidewalk ends was probably one of the first books I remember reading.

Took the kids to a local music fair, Kathy O'Connell was doing a kids Corner thing, Trout Fishing was playing. My cousin was interning at WXPN at the time, so one of us snuck away to chat with him. A bit later, we brought the kids over to the Kid's Corner tent, Kathy got all excited, rushed over shouting the kids names. They were awestruck that she KNEW them. Then she called "Kieth, Ezra, you have to come meet two of my favorite listeners!" They all chatted for a while, autographed a CD, it was a day the kids will never forget.
Ralphie ★ Posted September 28, 2020 Share #23 Posted September 28, 2020 Cool! I was never THAT involved, but would put it on for the kids if we were driving from 7-8. Plenty of fun songs. Kathy and Robert Drake are darn good radio hosts!
