Winter hiking, snowshoeing, skiing in North Vancouver mountains isn't always tame stuff

Woman from Toronto went snowshoeing in local mountains in North Vancouver.  Part of the problem is people who don't live near mountains and are from cities, don' realize that local park/resort areas ARE wilderness. One sees mountains all around from downtown Vancouver, gets there by local bus...and feels so "safe", ordinary...

Every single year, there are people who die from getting lost, snowboarding etc. beyond boundaries in local vancouver mountains. The local search and rescue get frustrated dealing with newbies who aren't prepared at all. You can hike for 45 km. in the mountains  that you see from downtown Vancouver.....and some people have gotten lost....because of deep forest areas.

Dearie's daughter lives in a complex in suburbs of Vancouver....there's a local cougar that wanders about in her neighbourhood. Not far from a big university.

One of the things learns when moving to Vancouver from southern Ontario, when you go hiking you should have a good pair of trail shoes /hiking boots with decent tread grip. Very different, even going up and down gentle mountain sides and hills.
