TrentonMakes Posted January 17, 2021 Share #3 Posted January 17, 2021 He's on a very short list of the all time best ever. Same for that song in particular.
MickinMD ★ Posted January 17, 2021 Share #4 Posted January 17, 2021 Thanks for posting this! I love that song and dueling guitar work in the original recording, which is almost like the complex Counterpoint (where two interacting melodies, one in the background, provide the equivalent of background chords) that occurred in Baroque music before Bach began to switch to chordal backgrounds, followed by Haydn and Mozart in the Classical Era, and we've been doing chords ever since. Paul Simon has experimented with old sounds going all the way back to the "Church Modes" (instead of the major and minor scales) of 1000 years ago which gives that haunting aura to songs like "Scarborough Fair." There's a hint of Counterpoint in this Live from Paris video where the banjo plays some complete-the-chord and fill-in notes to compliment Simon's guitar. I have the mp3 on my laptop and play it often.
