Popular Post Kzoo Posted January 24, 2021 Popular Post Share #1 Posted January 24, 2021 I took some Christmas lights down this afternoon. I get done and was coming inside and closed a garage door. BAM! Those suckers are loud when they snap. It took about 5 minutes to remove the broken spring. A quick trip to Menards and the install was underway. No broken bones or blood was involved in the repair. 9
Ralphie ★ Posted January 24, 2021 Share #2 Posted January 24, 2021 Was it a regular spring or torsion spring? If it was a regular one, did it have a safety cable in it?
Forum Administrator Posted January 24, 2021 Share #3 Posted January 24, 2021 Mine needed replaced a few years ago. I watched on YouTube video of the spring not properly removed and decided to call a professional.

groupw Posted January 24, 2021 Share #5 Posted January 24, 2021 I was working in the yard when the guy replaced our garage door. I watched when he was setting up the torsion spring. I made a note to myself to call a pro if anything needed done. I saw the potential energy and that was good enough for me.

Square Wheels Posted January 25, 2021 Share #7 Posted January 25, 2021 I have a double door, one side broke, they came out next day, replaced both sides for a few hundred. I'm crazy, and will try most anything, not that.

Using the proper winding bars and making sure one is engaged before the other is removed is recommended. And doing it off to the side in case something let’s go. Actually pretty easy peasy.
Bikeguy Posted January 25, 2021 Share #9 Posted January 25, 2021 I replaced the regular springs at my old home at least 3 times over the 35 years we lived there. They ALLWAYS broke in the winter. My new home has torsion springs. I'll call the guy.... I've seen the videos, and I probably could do the repair if I went out and purchased the winding bars. I don't want to find out what could go wrong.
JerrySTL ★ Posted January 25, 2021 Share #10 Posted January 25, 2021 Springs no. Rollers yes.
jsharr ★ Posted January 25, 2021 Share #11 Posted January 25, 2021 If you would’ve done the right thing and just left the lights up the spring probably would not have broken.
Razors Edge ★ Posted January 25, 2021 Share #12 Posted January 25, 2021 Our old garage door had springs on both sides, and I was coming in one time and heard one break. I found the top of the spring (connector curl) all the way across the garage. Unlike you, I just grabbed a sturdy locking ring and used that for the next ten years as the connection between the spring and the attachment point. Did the same a few years later when the other spring broke. A couple bucks in parts that lasted until I finally replaced the door and opener altogether a couple years ago. $1.79 at homedepot:

They last as long as they have to until a new spring can arrive. I've been present when both types of springs have busted as well as snapped lifting cables (same thing). It is definitely startling.
