Popular Post Longjohn ★ Posted February 7, 2021 Popular Post Share #1 Posted February 7, 2021 Have you seen this man? He wanted snow and wasn’t getting any at home so he loaded up his sleds and his dogs and headed to northwest Wi. Two days ago he posted that he was stuck in the snow and waiting to be rescued. He hasn’t made any posts on FB or here since. He doesn’t look very happy. 1

Hope he had food. 2

Popular Post Digital_photog ★ Posted February 7, 2021 Popular Post Share #22 Posted February 7, 2021 Got to northwest Wisconsin about an hour before dark Wednesday afternoon. Thought this was great, would have time to set up camp, get the dogs settled and some food ready before dark. Well, on the steep uphill drive into the campground I had the truck in 4 wheel drive in the unplowed snow. Was doing fine till a steep uphill turn on ice. Truck only wanted to go straight ahead. couldn't turn and go up the hill. A friend with a Jeep Rubicon tried to help pull me up. that didn't work either. We knew the payloader was coming sometime Thursday or Friday to plow out the campground. No cell service at that spot. By that time it was dark so I set up camp on the road. Took care of the dogs and made supper with light from my headlamp. Had to either melt snow or walk the half mile to the water hydrant at the other end of the campground. Put my water containers on the smaller sled and pulled it myself to get water and back. Over the next 2 days made that trip many times. I had a warm bed. Plenty of food for over a week for me and the dogs. The only phone service or data connection was a half mile away at the top of the hill. I couldn't go far or run the sled dog trails because I didn't know when help would be there. No real danger but couldn't run dogs or play online. read through both of the new magazines I took along. Just had to stay close to camp to be ready when the plow came. Garmin watch showed that I walked nearly 20 miles each day. Friday after I got out I went to the campsite and started to dig out my parking place. Needed to dig out 2 foot deep snow area 10 feet by 40 feet to gt the truck and trailer in. Decided against all that digging so the dogs and I made the trip back home with now sled time. Got home late yesterday afternoon. After I had the dogs back in their kennel and houses bedded with straw I came in and looked at snowblowers on facebook marketplace. Saw one a couple miles from me that looked like new. Big enough to clean out a truck and trailer parking place but not too large to take along. Looked like new. Less than half new price. Ended up buying it. Found out he got it from a friend who had bought it then had health problems and never used it. When he got it it never had oil or fuel put in it. He put in oil and fuel and burned less than one tank of gas. Decided his tractor was better for him so sold it for what he had in it. For $350 it beats shoveling snow. 5

Since I didn't know when he would get there to get me out I didn't set up the hot tent with the wood burning stove. I slept in the little sleeping room in the front of the trailer. My sleeping bag is rated for -60 degrees so I was very warm. I do have a diesel heater in that room. I turned it on once when I was changing clothes. At the lowest setting the the thermostat keeps it at 8c (46f for those who can't convert it. The thermostat on this Chinese heater reads in c) That is nicer for changing clothes than the -5f it was outside. I guess I could have kept the stinky clothes on. The dogs don't seem to care. 1

I haven't finished all the interior of the new trailer. Winter camping is a lot of fun but can get dangerous quick if you aren't prepared properly. Being tired I felt that it would be risky to continue. It was already -5f and dropping so I thought it was time to drop out. I did hear from the others there that by the next morning it was -22f. I had gear for that and lower but I was mentally exhausted. That is when you make mistakes that are dangerous to you and others. I not only had myself to care for but 6 dogs too. It wasn't fair to endanger them or anyone who may have had to come assist.
