Parr8hed Posted February 15, 2021 Share #4 Posted February 15, 2021 The diesel 350 has a block heater. I have read that you don't plug it in until in negative numbers. It has been starting fine in the teens.
donkpow Posted February 15, 2021 Share #5 Posted February 15, 2021 Nope. There used to be discussions on whether or not an engine "heater' was bad for the engine. I think probably pan heaters are the worst. I've used them in stationary emergency power generator sets with diesel prime movers.
maddmaxx ★ Posted February 15, 2021 Share #6 Posted February 15, 2021 No, never used one. The only time we had to heat oil was for the Funny Car. That was 90 weight oil and we'd stuff the oil cans in the nooks around the tow truck engine exhaust manifold to warm it up so it was easy to pour. JerrySTL ★ Posted February 15, 2021 Share #7 Posted February 15, 2021 I've installed freeze plug heaters in a couple of cars. Also a heated dip stick. I guess that's similar to being a oil pan heater as its job was to warm up the oil.
Kirby Posted February 15, 2021 Share #8 Posted February 15, 2021 Since I don't know what that is, I don't think I do.
Bikeguy Posted February 15, 2021 Share #9 Posted February 15, 2021 No.. never used one. My Prius was always parked outside at my old house. One unexpected benefit of the hybrid system is, the hybrid motor starts the gas engine. It was just about guaranteed to start. 1
Longjohn ★ Posted February 15, 2021 Share #10 Posted February 15, 2021 The only time I used a heater was when I drove to Alaska. Had the dealership add a high temperature thermostat and add a antifreeze heater pump into the cooling system. It worked really good except for the time we used a bad extension cord. I didn’t know if we were ever going to get it started. It was nice because as soon as you start the vehicle you had heat. Still wasn’t enough heat to keep the frost off the inside of the windshield. I kept an ice scraper between the seats and every ten minutes or so I scraped the frost.
Further Posted February 15, 2021 Share #11 Posted February 15, 2021 I used to put a small space heater in the cab of my truck and run the cord into the house. I would plug it in when I got up and 1/2 hour or so later when I left for work the cab would be warm. Just thought I'd throw that out there...
Tizeye Posted February 15, 2021 Share #12 Posted February 15, 2021 Ah, no... But, I did suffer through Consumer Reports car reviews in the 60' and 70's always labeling an air conditioner a fuel wasting luxury item they did not recommend. They obviously didn't live in Florida or have the standard vinyl seats in their cars.

team scooter Posted February 16, 2021 Share #18 Posted February 16, 2021 Haven't had a car that failed to cold start since the '70s. The one and only car with a block heater I had in the '80s, the one night I tried to use it, we had an overnight power outage. Luckily it started because it got so cold we couldn't stay in the house. I think vehicles, batteries and oil viscosity have improved over the years. This weekend it got down to 30 below UP north and the CX started right up. It didn't even whine or complain, much.
